The idea of beefing up the usefulness of recon aircraft got me thinking. I've putzed around with Harpoon over the years and am coming back to it again and really liking HCE. I usually find myself overwhelmed with the huge scenarios with platforms all over the landscape doing all sorts of things. I prefer smaller scenarios where the problems are more limited - like escorting a convoy across the Atlantic in the face of Badgers, Bears and Victors or conducting a detailed carrier strike against a target. Currently I'm setting up a 'test range' with a base in Greenland from which I'll be running flights down to Keflivik to get a feel for what the various aircraft can d…

Here's something those of you with naval service experience or engineering knowledge might be able to help out with: How long could a warship sustain flank speed? By this I mean pedal to the metal, all out pushing the ship at its maximum capable speed. Now I realize that this varies among propulsion types (steam, diesel, gas, nuclear, etc), ship types, even among individual ships, and of course, flank speed is limited by fuel (something akin to afterburner on a fighter jet), but I'm interested in your educated guesstimate. But if you can be more specific, then by all means please go ahead. If you're really naval engineering tech savvy, then how long do you…

OK, now I'm really shocked. I've just started the 10th scenario in EC2003 GIUK in my newly bought HCE and what do I find on my aircraft carrier? F-15s! and F-22s! Please, tell me, what's going on here? (And I'm pretty sure I've seen this thing in HC 2002 already.) And please allow me some well-justified irony: Should I expect B-2s launched from enemy aircraft carriers?

I've had an idea for a while about doing small battleset maps for specific scenarios, eg WWII mini sub attack Sydney Harbour, Air attack Pearl Harbour, and the like. To do so I need to fine tune the actual battleset map so as to have the needed detail. I've seen on a document mention of editing individual bitmaps but no info on how it is done and reloaded into the battleset. Can anyone help me? I've found some bitmaps in the BSbuilder folder but my "GIMP" editor doesn't seem to like the 16 bit per channel, do I need another graphic editor? Don Thomas

The title says it all, just curious as it has great potential (been playing Harpoon since the old Amiga days) but after I bought this last one I was gutted as it was truely terrible, same went for ANW whioch was even more broken. I'd love to get my moneys worth out of it even if I have to wait another 5 years...

Allrighty, start submitting national anthems as wav, mp3, or other non midi formats that I can easily read, Enrique wants his sunk ship songs playing again. We'll need additional information with each: 1. What nation it is representing 2. Reasonble proof the file can be used in a commercial product with nothing more than attribution as 'payment.' I would suggest leaning towards instrumental variants but I don't see why lyrical variants wouldn't be acceptable though we'll review each for content.

Here is how to install the beta versions when Windows thinks you shouldn't. On the first screen click "More Info" On the second screen click "Run Anyway" Windows is doing a smart thing in that it is trying to prevent you from running programs that are unsigned. Signing gives a measure of assurance that the file is really from who it says it is from and in turn that it may actually be what it says it is. Historically it has been expensive and time consuming to get the signing up and running. HC being a hobby has meant spending money and time on something I don't much care about was a low priority, especially in versions of Windows where running unsigned …

Okay, I'm using the HCDB-080712. I've got a group of a dozen SV-22s squatting on top of an Akula which is running at 35 knots at Deep. I've got a rock-solid lock on Mr. Akula, both from sonobuoys and dipping sonar. Range is about a mile. I've fired off at least half a dozen Mk 50s, moving to bracket the sub as necessary. So WTF are the torps just sailing right past the sub as if they can't see it?!?!?!?!?!? Has the acquisition radius on the torps gotten screwed up again?

What's your ideal weapons system to perform which task? How do you do it best while keeping your own weapons out of harm's way? I'll start with ASW. After running through I don't know how many plane and copter loads of torpedoes in vain attempts to sink modern subs (particularly Oscars and Sierras, which seem to be the armored tanks of subs), I gave up on letting the AI run the attacks and started micro-managing them. And I also started looking more closely for the best weapons and platforms to deliver them. Here's what I've found about ASW Ops from the Blue perspective. The AI ASWcwill attack from 2 miles away, which is using up about a third of the total r…

Playing HCE, GIUK scenario "Gatekeeper." Question has to do with Unit and Group screen differences. I have two single-sub units with sub in the center of the formation. One shows in the Group screen that it is the middle of Iceland and Norway, yet the Unit menu shows it running aground in Norway. The second is 269 nm from a red contact in the Group screen, yet in the Unit screen it is 10 nm away and able to attack. It's also moving at 22 degrees in one screen and 244 in the other.

Two or three questions about refueling: 1. How is fuel allocated among differing a/c types in a common group during refueling? For example, if I have groups consisting of an EF-111 (Patrol) and some F-111s (GP), or an EA-6B (Patrol) and some A-6Es (Precis-2), or some other similar combinations where there is a member type that has a much shorter range than other type(s) in the group and the tanker that is re-fueling the group does not have enough fuel to top off all the members, then how is the fuel allocated among those group members? Do the shorter-ranged members get topped off, and the remaining fuel distributed among the others, or (preferrably) does the fuel g…

I have been looking at the WestPac Middleweights scenario. I can't say for sure, but I think the computer (N or S Korea) gets Rafales. We have lots of good AEW planes, and lots of planes with 40 nm AMRAAMs, but the Rafale is hard to detect AND it has 54 nm AA missiles. Any suggestions on how to deal with this menace? And how in the heck did either Korea get Rafales anyway?

HarpGamer, in conjunction with Advanced Gaming Systems Inc (AGSI) and Matrix Games, is launching what we call the “HCE Challenge”. The Harpoon Commander’s Edition (HCE) Challenge will be, for all intents and purposes, a scenario design contest, the goals of which will include: • providing an interesting, enjoyable and potentially rewarding way to learn how to write scenarios for HCE; and • generating new and challenging scenarios for potential inclusion in the new official HCE BattleSets: Caribbean, South Atlantic, South Africa and the Middle East). The HCE Challenge will have a competitive aspect, and the “winners” will receive rewards which may include any …

At Grumble's sugerence, I start this new topic. Today Tony has do a lot of changes in the HCE 2009-82 Game Engine, with a very impressive list of recovered features http://harpgamer.com...e-notes/page-11 The neutrals no detecting more enemy units for the player's side also speeds up the gameplay a lot! (as in WWII scenarios the neutral merchants reporting one and other time previously detected enemy units). Testing the drone scenario I see the gameplay is very improved, now the game runs very smooth, perhaps not slowed because the neutral detecting enemy units. The air-to-ground guns are effective now! I hope to test ASuW weapons against submarines latest, and other …

I've set up some quick test games to try and do some minesweeping for a scenario I would like to do. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or if it is just the quality of units I am using. I am trying to hunt with the Canadian Kingston class MCDV's (PG) and as mentioned in their notes, they have "limited minehunting capabilities". They are outfitted with some minehunting gear but I always hit the mine before being able to "attack" the mine. They don't have any sonar so I've located the mines with a Halifax class, but when I send the Kingston ships in they always hit the mines. Is this a function of their poor equipment (similar to RL) or is there something I …
