<p style="text-align:center;">
	<span style="font-size:18px;"><strong>Welcome to the Harpoon Classic demo.</strong></span>
</p>

<p>
	<br>
	This demo revisits a storied part of Harpoon's history via the USNI BattleSet. Pooners Brad, Tony, and Ralf, with the help of the beta testing team, have re-made the five original USNI scenarios. The scenarios take advantage of game capabilities added since the original USNI version of the game was released more than 20 years ago! Not only that, but the weapons of war more closely match the real-world weapons thanks to post Cold-War release of information and the hard work of Brad in the DB editing department. These are no longer easy, nor introductory, scenarios, be prepared!<br>
	<br>
	In addition to the ten USNI scenarios (there are two versions of each scenario, one for play as the Soviet side, one for the NATO side) you will find twelve scenarios in the WestPac battleset. There you will also find an introductory scenario, "1.0 Beginner Walk-Thru Scenario" that will help you grasp the game controls and some of the new features in HCE such as more variable radar RCS, submarine signatures, and land warfare between tanks and other vehicles.<br>
	<br>
	Find a keyboard command cheat-sheet at <a data-ipb="nomediaparse" href="https://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/files/file/417-keyboard-commands-by-location/" rel="">Keyboard Commands by Location</a>.<br>
	Also note the excellent "Tactics 101" articles available at HarpGamer that provide both theoretical and game background/guidance.<br>
	<a data-ipb="nomediaparse" href="https://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showforum=4" rel="">https://harpgamer.com...php?showforum=4</a> (or do a search for Tactics 101).<br>
	<br>
	As you investigate the game and have questions feel free to come ask those questions at <a data-ipb="nomediaparse" href="https://www.harpgamer.com/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.harpgamer.com/</a>, specifically in the <a data-ipb="nomediaparse" href="https://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=3452" rel="">Demo Discussion Thread</a>. The game is being actively developed, supported, and expanded by the Harpoon community.<br>
	<br>
	<strong>Just a few of the many benefits of buying the full Harpoon - Ultimate Edition game:</strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<ul class="bbc">
	<li>
		Over 200 more scenarios built in to the game including the classic GIUK, NAVC, MEDC, and IOPG battle grounds.
	</li>
	<li>
		The ability to load user created scenarios and databases. HarpGamer alone hosts 250+ user-made scenarios. These user creations are where the game really shines!
	</li>
	<li>
		Scenario Editor for crafting your own battles, testing your ideas, and sharing your efforts with the community.
	</li>
	<li>
		Database Editor that allows you to modify the platforms used in the game and again model different what-if situations.
	</li>
	<li>
		Battleset Builder for taking your battle to an area of the planet (real or imagined) that isn’t covered by the existing battlesets.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>
	<strong>System Requirements &amp; Technical Information:</strong>
</p>

<ul class="bbc">
	<li>
		The demo runs on Windows 10, 11.
	</li>
	<li>
		Installer size is about 50MB. The installation takes about 150MB of disk space.
	</li>
	<li>
		Installing the demo will not affect your full installs of prior HC versions nor will it affect a full HC install.
	</li>
	<li>
		The demo executes a rudimentary check to see if your system clock has been set back in time to defeat the demo expiration mechanism. Some computers that haven't had clocks set back will not pass this test. The full HC game does not have this check so even if you can't run the demo, you will be able to run the full HC game.
	</li>
	<li>
		Using the uninstaller will remove all files, registry settings, and shortcuts created by the installer. It will also remove all saved games in the HCDemo directory.
	</li>

	Matrix Games will stop publishing Computer Harpoon no later than April 30, 2025.
</p>

<p>
	This action is at the direction of the rights holders of Computer Harpoon.  The team at HarpGamer has been dedicated to maintaining and developing Computer Harpoon. However, we do not hold the rights to the game nor to publish the game.  As a result, Harpoon Classic/Commander's/Ultimate and Harpoon 3/ANW licenses will no longer be available for purchase.
</p>

<p>
	If you would like to buy a copy, visit <a href="https://www.matrixgames.com/game/larry-bonds-harpoon-ultimate-edition" ipsnoembed="false" rel="external nofollow">https://www.matrixgames.com/game/larry-bonds-harpoon-ultimate-edition</a>
</p>

<p>
	This ends development of a simulation package first published in December of 1989, 35 years ago as of April, 2025.  That is an impressive run of which I've been a part of as a player since 1992, tester since 2002, and programmer since 2003.
</p>

<p>
	We had hoped Matrix would publish a patch for Harpoon Classic in March but due to the impending end of publishing, declined to invest the resources in packaging the update I made available to them.  Larry Bond gave me approval on April 3rd to distribute a last patch which you should see by the end of June.  <s>I have asked the rights holders if we can distribute a patch but haven't received a response so while I'm hopeful, it is not guaranteed.  At the very least, the latest beta builds don't expire until 2030.</s>
</p>

<p>
	The community's dedication has been instrumental in Computer Harpoon’s longevity. A key focus has been on enabling community-created enhancements through ExportDLLs, allowing players to expand and customize the game experience without requiring updates to the core program.
</p>

<p>
	Harpooners like donaldseadog in Australia have developed innovative tools that demonstrate the potential for community-driven enhancements, including platform modifications, weapon adjustments, and expanded data capacity.  While the core game's distribution will end, those of you with licenses can continue to experience new functionality thanks the community, which kept the game going since the release of Harpoon 97.
</p>

<p>
	We intend to keep HarpGamer up and running for many years to come, tweaking platforms, writing scenarios, and crafting addons.  The Harpoon community has always been vital to its success. We encourage players to continue supporting and expanding the game.

	For thise that don't scour Discord HC discussions a recent interesting concept came in about gaining points or awards for completing scenarios. Apparently this is something common in the gaming world so many will know about it.
</p>

<p>
	Its worth a little look at the discord recent posts of the last few days if you use the platform.
</p>

<p>
	Anyway it has me thinking about how this could be done (the structure is there to do it) and currently I'm thinking of issuing a score (by an unbiassed exportdll probably) according to some (not yet determined) formulae and string those scores for a player across related scenario strings eg a battleset.
</p>

<p>
	I think it could be a bit of icing for some people, any thoughts?

	I recently picked up Harpoon Classic '97 from Steam, having never played Harpoon before. I've played the tutorial scenario and am excited to play through all 250 scenarios in due course. I fire it up each evening with a hot cup of decaf coffee in hand and a copy of <em>The </em><em>Hunt for Red October</em> next to me. <span class="ipsEmoji">😉</span> I have a few questions based on what I've read online and heard about.
</p>

<ol>
	<li>
		From what I understand, Matrix had a much bigger, more robust version of "classic Harpoon" that was discontinued and removed from digital store shelves last year. Several months later, Harpoon Classic '97 was released by Microprose and quickly updated to v1.63b. After incorporating Steam cloud saves in September, radio silence. Has anyone here been in contact with Microprose about potentially bringing the game closer to where the community brought the Matrix edition over the last couple decades?
	</li>
	<li>
		Will custom scenarios here work with Harpoon Classic '97, or do they require the Matrix edition that has now disappeared?
	</li>
	<li>
		Why do you continue to play Harpoon when Command Modern Operations exists? (I have never played).
	</li>
	<li>
		How different does Harpoon Classic '97 play from paper Harpoon V?
	</li>
	<li>
		What advice do you have for a newcomer not only to Harpoon but also to wargaming in general?
	</li>
</ol>

<p>
	Thank you and have a good one!

	I played HC'97 20-25 years ago and loved it.  I completed a good chunk of the scenarios and battlesets back then.  I noticed a few weeks ago that it was available on Steam, so I purchased it for nostalgia's sake.  I completed all of the GIUK scenarios from the first battleset and moved on to the NACV battleset.  Here is where I am running into issues.  All three of the Okean class vessels in the first two scenarios are replaced with Kalinin class vessels.  It is very odd to have a cruiser sailing solo with no escorts.  It also causes severe imbalance issues, making the scenarios completely impossible for US/Blue and unenjoyable/non-challenging for USSR/Red.  After doing a search in this forum for Okean, I learned that it is also used in the "Ambush" scenario of the NACV battleset.  I checked that, and sure enough that has the same issue with Kalinin class instead of Okean class.  I'm not sure what other scenarios use Okean class vessels, but my guess is that at minimum, every scenario from the NACV battleset that uses Okean class vessels will have that error.  I looked up the individual ship names all of those "Kalinin" class ships were actual Okean class vessels - Repiter, Reduktor, and Zond - also confirming the error or bug.
</p>

<p>
	The Steam version was automatically updated to 1.63d.  Is this a known issue with HC'97 or is it something unique to the Steam version?  Is anyone aware of a fix?
</p>

	Toolbox V 2.4.2.1 (zip 2.4) +  requires GE V 2017.013 - v 2022.027 (including Matrix Patch 2022.027)
</p>

<p>
	Toolbox vers 2.10.0.1 + require GE 2023.006+
</p>

<p>
	ToolboxV.zip is similar to version 2.10 but updated features from recent versions backed into the older interface
</p>

<p>
	Toolbox version 2.11+ requires GE version 2025.017 +
</p>

<p>
	Installation for GE vers 2025.001 +:
</p>

<p>
	Your downloaded Export.DLL for Harpoon Classic is easily installed.<br>
	For Toolbox which is designed to run in the Game Engine only , not in the Scenario Editor, you should create (if not already) a folder in the games standard ExportDLL folder and name it 'GE'. Then simply unzip yoour package into there with the toolbox.dll in the GE folder.<br>
	To disable toolbox simply move it to another foler (other than ExportDLL) or rename the file type to eg Toolbox.dll.bck<br>
	For ExpDLL designed for both GE and SE (eg Drone.DLL) unzip them into the standard ExportDLL folder, to disable them same as above, move or rename.<br>
	For ExpDLL designed on ly for the scenario editor (noone at present) create and load them into a ExportDLL sub folder named 'SE'.
</p>

<p>
	This tool provides a window which resides in the Harpoon game window providing tools for:<br>
	manipulating air units formations within groups;<br>
	edit two air group's courses for joining;<br>
	in flight reassignment of missile targets;<br>
	deploying air groups exactly over known position of enemy unit;<br>
	capturing enemy groups;<br>
	and duplicating the message log window (so that it can replace the message log window for screen space saving).
</p>

<p>
	It provides some game status information not available in the game including information on the loaded scenario, detailed list of destroyed assets and damaged assets and any victory conditions that have been met.
</p>

<p>
	Attacking Neutral Penalty<br>
	Toolbox keeps track of attacks launched by the player and if any target a neutral asset (including if the asset is shown as unknown side) the player is penalised by the attacked group changing to enemy and if the attack is launched from an air group, that group will change to neutral (and RTB at bingo) so to be unavailable in short term for further action.
</p>

<p>
	In most pages of toolbox player groups are selected if they are currently selected in the game. The selection can be overridden with normal mouse selections.
</p>

<p>
	AirGrpForm window:<br>
	The "Search" button brings up a list of all current players groups that include air units. By selecting one of the listed group its air units will list in the next box.<br>
	By selecting one of the units you can then edit the flight level of that unit or give it an offset from the group centre position. The offset is approximately nautical miles and a combination of N/S (+is south) or E/W (+is east). If the group is in the unit window you should see the shift instantly. There is an idicator for if the unit is NOE capable or not.<br>
	To cause two air groups to join select one group in the group window and press one of the 'Grp' buttons (or use right mouse click popup menu), the group ID will be shown,then select the second group and press the second 'Grp' button, finally press the 'Join' button. The groups will be vectored to meet and join.<br>
	ASW, CAP, EW and AEW - To add a hexagon based patrol select an air group, select a non zero base size (approx NMs) then press the appropriate button ASW low alt (vlow if capable), CAP medium alt with 1 in 5 min intermittent radar and AEW at highest alt capable with 1 in 10 min intermittent radar, EW like AEW but 2 1/2 in 3 min radar. If the selected group already had a course set then the patrol will be centred on the first course point, otherwise it is centred on the groups current position.
</p>

<p>
	If the group already has a multi leg course (no in course orders other than the last leg eg RTB) and the patrol size is set to zero then the course remains and the legs are populated with the loiter/hover and cruise orders plus radar as per the hex patrols.<br>
	Pause will pause the AI but still allow some game interaction, eg move game focus.
</p>

<p>
	Attack window:<br>
	gives information on enemy units and groups that are visible to you. An asterisk (*) before an enemy unit name indicates that an exact fix is known. A group '00' indicated unknown size. Some experimental functions include an ability to reassign missiles' targets (if capable and in the correct guidance phase), attempt to capture certain enemy or neutral assets, 'defection' of groups and directing a group to move exactly directly over the current known position of an enemy unit (or centre of uncertainty zone if no exact fix exists).
</p>

<p>
	Air Refuel window:<br>
	This adds versatility to the already good GE refueling ability. You can set the toolbox to automatically pause the game as refuel events are queued by the main program and bring up the event information. You can bring up a list of all your groups for which refueling is current and select a group to show its units' and refueling information. You can also search for a list of Air Groups that include a tanker.<br>
	Two 'manual' refueling tasks are available to supplement game refueling, you can manually "Queue" a new refuel cycle for the whole group and select the refueling unit if there are more than one (like alt+R in game but you can select which tanker unit refuels). You can also refuel tanker units from other tanker units in the group or transfer fuel internally of a tanker unit (so as to use refuel store to increase the tankers range or in reverse so as to use some of the tankers fuel for refueling). Single units can have stipulated amounts of fuel transferred without starting standard refuel cycle, so you can refuel high unit # units without waiting for the whole group to be refueled, handy if you have just joined low fuel units to a large group. In the unit information window there is information to help you estimate your refueling needs: unit endurance in minutes, unit range at current speed in nm, unit estimated range if it is split off from the refuel group (and may have a cruise speed high than the refuel group) and the nominal max range (at normal cruise speed) of the unit. The last two 'range' values allows you to estimate how much fuel can be taken up by the unit while in the refuel group.
</p>

<p>
	Groups window
</p>

<p>
	this provides information about units in your various groups.
</p>

<p>
	Munitions window: gives a tally across mutliple sessions of the same scenario of the expenditure of your munitions, both total and aircraft only (tallied for each AC home unit).
</p>

<p>
	Status Window includes four pages for Loaded game and scenario information, victory conditions achieved, damaged unit list and dead unit list
</p>

<p>
	Settings window: gives instruction on using toolbox and a setting for the number of lines to show in the message window, which reproduces the in-game messages so that if you wish you can delete the std in game messages for more space.
</p>

<p>
	Includes summary of handy short cut key commands.
</p>

<p>
	To use the program unzip the ToolBox.dll file into the exportDLL folder of your HCE installation. For 2025.001+ GE versions install in a ExportDLL subfolder named GE. To uninstall simply move or delete the file.<br>
	The program utilises 'LazGUI.dll' code by Tony Eischens and adapted by Don Thomas.<br>
	Please direct any queries or bug reports via Harpgamer.

	Steam is apparently launching <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/3086120/Harpoon_Classic_97/" rel="external nofollow">this</a> soon. I just fail to see the point.
</p>

<p>
	There already is a tremendous amount of work already laid down by the Harpgamer community and fragmenting the effort do not seem like a good idea.

	Hi guys,<br />
	I am a long time player of harpoon. I want to try running the scenario editor on a Oracle virtual machine. Any help with what version of VM machine would be helpful. I want to use Windows XP as the operating system. Can I use windows XP professional?<br />
	Should it be Windows XP 32 bit.<br />
	I'm not asking for help to get this running, I just want to know what hardware and software I should use.<br />
	<br />
	Thanks in advance<br />

	I'm wondering those who are regularly using HC which Game Engine version you normally use, eg 2022.027 last matrix patch, 2025 comprehensive update or something in between. Also, are you occasionally having aircraft fall from the sky having run out of fuel?
</p>

<p>
	I'm trying to find when this started, I'm thinking shortly after 2022.027. We have a bandaid fix for recent versions that seems to be working but in ge 2022.008 I recently seem to have found a new version of the bug that is immune to the bandaid solution.

	This file is written to run as an ExportDLL library with Harpoon Classic.
</p>

<p>
	It repairs errors in the Game Engine, when possible, external of the main program.<br />
	The file ErrataGE.DLL should be loaded into the sub folder exportDLL\GE of your main installation folder (EG Matrix Games\HUCE)<br />
	version 1.001 - 2025July22 - to run in beta game engines version 2025.007 or newer and HC2025.024_ComprehensivePatch.<br />
	At game start the library searches game events looking for two types of errors that can occur effecting group air patrols in particular.<br />
	Typically if these errors continue air patrol AC will fail to return to base when low on fuel and crash. You can determine if the error is present by looking at the formation editor of a group, air patrols that are listed by ac class (eg F/A-18) instead of patrol type (eg CAP) and have the 'delete' button greyed out are in error.<br />
	A second error type is where a patrol event remains after it's unit has ceased to exist (landed or shot down) and still refers to the non existing unit.

	Last night i had a chopper landing on my frigate and the target of an enemy SAM (sm-2 I think) and was delighted but surprised to see the information "point defense got 'em all". Looking at my weapon ammo i deduced it was the 3" otto gun that got the kill.
</p>

<p>
	I've previously seen in a similar situation where the chopper lands before impact the sam hits the ship so really a nice result.
</p>

<p>
	Unbelievable shooting, maybe.

	It's been a long time dream by many of us to be able to limit the number of munitions available to aircraft. Recent additions to the game by TonyE just migh have us there. This is a screen shot of an early use of the new Stores Consumed feature that tracks most munitions as they are fired. They can be filtered by firing unit class, home base and side (amongst other). The listing is circled in the lower right of the screen. The information can also be exported to a text file for later perusal.<br />
	An extension of this could be assigning $ values to munitions giving another dimension to 'scoring'.

	Hi All,
</p>

<p>
	Thanks to Tony, Don and Eric for working on the next update. Lots of enthusiastic chat on Discord.
</p>

<p>
	Question - any insight on how weather affects the performance of aircraft and weapons?  I'm working on a planning tool and trying to figure out if I should degrade estimates for hit percentage or range.
</p>

<p>
	Thanks much!
