  1. Europe won't get away with nuking Iran just like the US wouldn't. I think Europe would quickly burn through its limited stocks of TLAM and probably send Eurofighters and Rafale into harm's way to severely diminish much of Iran's military. But how much would the US contribute I really have no clue. In today's climate, I think very little whereas five or ten years ago we would certainly have been lobbing missiles right along side the Eurofolk.
  2. My 2 cents... You capture the sentiment well, a response that is unlikely to happen to an event that is likely to happen. The president's words, however, I think you got exactly correct, making a statement he cannot hope to live up to, "There will never be another Boston Holocaust." I believe NATO would detach any units from joint exercises on US soil or in public waters and would send any other US forces back to their bases (not back to CONUS in 72 hours but just back to their British, German, Italian, ... bases). The UN would work at unheard of speed to condemn the US. There would also be great rhetoric about kicking the US out of the UN and shifting headquarters out of the US. Russia, nah, no nuclear attack but I wouldn't be surprised if they took advantage of the situation to forcibly take back some wayward republics and give a thorough cleansing to any internal descent. That is hardly in the realm of 72 hours but you may well see some AEGIS ashore modules suddenly burst into flame in Eastern Europe. Russia as always will win the international PR game, demanding huge reparations for irradiated crops, citizens, and so on. imho China is in the toughest spot of all. My take is that they would quite accidentally bite off more than they can chew. The US is a huge trading partner and I would expect China to apply serious economic pressure, threatening their own livelihood in the process. In the somewhat longer-term (30 days?), look for moves to assert territorial control that result in military clashes, naval in particular, with China and its neighbors. This is where some recent analysis pieces kick in saying the Chinese people will demand this action in the South China Sea and the politicians will have the choice to step down or honor the short-sighted wishes of the public. I would assume the politicians will cave and missiles will fly. Expect Japan and South Korea and Australia and ??? to grow/demonstrate a backbone and push back in a way not thought possible when the US was riding shotgun. Other countries will generally condemn and emplace a trade embargo on the US throwing the US and many/most other countries into deep recession. Overall I wouldn't expect many or any kinetic attacks on the US itself but the US nuking Iran and Afghanistan would mark an immediate end to US omnipresence and overseas bases. Cyber attacks and every other non-kinetic weapon would be tried against us. We would be isolated but still have the ability to feed ourselves. The whole encounter would probably even speed the revival of manufacturing even if our standard of living would decrease at a faster pace than it is now. The US military would still be strong, just refocused more quickly to homeland defense and expeditionary operations.
  3. A dictator with a sense of humor might place a minefield in Tern's path or hijack her or... I bet she is unescorted.
  4. Don't forget that the enemy has to detect your ships in order to automatically form up attacks against your ships. That likely means sacrificing some sensing platforms to the player. I'm a crude scenario designer so I'll set up E-2 patrols in the expected player path of motion to help get whiffs of the player. They are of course one-shot deals. First one goes to point A, second one X hours later goes to point B and so on. For me that means adding more E-2s to the AI than it would have in real life. The AI is generally not I and needs some help to perform at a near-human level. That's a conundrum of the game, is it more realistic to give the AI extra resources so that it can put up a reasonable fight, or more realistic to give the AI the forces expected in real life and have the scenario not be a challenge? I'm all about an enjoyable experience so my approach leans more towards the former.

Yes, you may want the 2009.064GE from there. Don't forget your updated HCDB database from http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=235
  6. What can I say, I'm a sucker for the Iowa class. Your original post got Brad and I chatting about Under Siege on IRC. Pretty boiled down to being worth it for the ship and the cake.
  7. I think I'll even spring for the BluRay! Same idea though, just can't quite justify the theater for this one.
  8. Always thinking about improved map interfaces...
  9. The library of H3 scenarios I've written is tiny so take that into account. My thoughts follow closely with Mark's. The amount of effort required to maintain the different skill levels is huge and if it were my time to distribute it would go towards adding and maintaining platforms in the 'traditional' style. I would rather see a F-14 from four different time periods than one F-14 equipped with four different skill levels. If you are really serious about skill level, have you had a discussion with Russell and/or Don about how much it would cost to get the feature implemented in the game and in what time-frame? I'd throw a couple of bucks into the pot for such a capability AND freeing up your time for other edits.

  11. So I couldn't help but laugh when I got to the Commander's name, my apologies to those involved.
  12. LLTV was easy and was already working. It indeed only affects Visual detection and makes a platform with that flag think that it is always daylight for Visual detection purposes. if (Act->emit & sLOWLIGHT) visDay = 3; /* 1=night; 2=twilight; 3=daylight */ else visDay = Day; // Day - current time of day 1, 2, or 3 IR is trickier but it also appears to be working correctly for all cases except submarines. I believe I have submarines fixed up now as well. If a sub is at periscope depth or snorkeling or surfaced, it should be detectable by infrared (and visually) now. The Kelvin Wake code is in there and operational as part of Visual detection. The detecting unit must be airborn and at VLow or (Low or lower if seastate

HCE - 2012.002 - 2012/05/16 =========================== - Chg:0000 GE Checked that Infrared detections are attempted and they are. However, periscope, snorkeling, and surfaced subs had broken flags that prevented detection by IR, that has been fixed. - Chg:0000 GE Checked that LLTV flag has an effect and it does. It makes visual detections as if they always happen in broad daylight even in the dead of night.

  15. In the more recent 2011 series of builds it indeed was not possible to have a TCS detection. It is now possible in 2012.001. How it works... TCS only works against aircraft. TCS only works against aircraft that are Small or Large in size, VSmall will not be detected by TCS TCS can ideally see Small aircraft out to 16nm TCS can ideally see Large aircraft out to 38nm Weather will decrease the range TIme of day will affect range (shorter in the morning/evening and night) TCS has a 60 degree field of view centered on the aircraft's heading TCS can give you Height, Classname, and Propulsion You will rarely, if ever, see a detection type of TCS since it is a shorter ranged mechanism that say Radar but it will help give you that additional contact information. I didn't have time to look at IR or LLTV yet.

HCE - 2012.001 - 2012/05/15 =========================== - Chg:0000 GE Added additional licensing mechanism via LicenseDLL.dll - Chg:0000 GE ge.log now shows both the database version the scenario was created with and the current database version. - Chg:0000 GE Fixed sensor code so that TCS can actually have a successful detection. Modelled after H3 Paper rule 5.4.2.

  18. I started looking at TCS before heading to work this morning and saw that the flag is used. Once I have some more time we can determine if there are any valid situations that result in TCS doing anything. If we find that it does do something, the effects are clear, the TCS will work at short ranges within a 30 degree FOV of the nose of the aircraft and aids in firming up the contact (gives height and helps classification).
  19. A well proven strategy in history!
  20. Thanks guys, I happen to think the forum software should do the resizing for us but that just isn't the case at present. I will probably update some of the images myself as well.
  21. Can you guys go through your scenario uploads and use nice small thumbnails? I think it is more important to be able to read the information than to see a photo or screenshot overtake the web browser. I would propose a maximum width of 320 or so pixels, something like... Or if you think I'm way off base I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
