Noob question
Most of that applies to HC, at least in a broad sense, similar to how it applies to H3. That paragraph reads more as a tactics manual than a description of the exact capabilities of either game. Here's a quick overview of the CheckAirMissileHits function in HC that gets called when the missiles get really close to the target. 1. Missile shouldn't hit if target is above or below missile min/max altitude rating. 2. Give SARH missiles that are in Inertial mode a 5% chance of hitting (very generous as in most cases they should just self destruct or wander off if not being guided) 3. Apply ECM to the PH 4. Bump up hit chance if more than one missile was fired per target. 5. Trim hit chance if target is travelling > 1300 kts. 6. Take Snap Up/Down into account. 7. Trim hit chance if target is physical size VSmallAir 8. Compare ATA of missile and DATA of target with the above factors and add up the number of hits. Before it gets to CheckAirMissileHits the missile actually has to make it close to the target. That is where maneuvering, stealth, and deception come into play. Not to mention that whole SARH thing again if the firing platform is destroyed before the missile gets near the target. In very broad terms the missile will have a better chance of hitting if there is a firm sensor fix on the target the entire time. Thanks for asking the question!

Thanks Jay! I've had a severe case of 'real life' but after passing a big test yesterday morning May will be more flexible before summer insanity hits. The mechanism will be PayPal and I aim to get it in place before Monday.

Clemens' questions about HCDB
Pros of your own DB: You can add and modify platforms however you desire Instead of generic installations you can tailor them exactly to your needs You can take lemons and make lemonade by packaging your scenarios, database, and only the WestPac area you need by using the Battleset Builder. This way your results are easy to use, have a map specific to your area of ops, and carries your own custom battleset description. Cons: You don't get the benefit of future HCDB database updates If you don't package into a battleset, users will have a tougher time getting your scenarios to work

Scenario Editor Use/Workstream with VMLite?
I also have not used VMLite, being a VMWare fan. I did take a look at the site though and see no reason VMLite would not work for you. Why would you want to pay $200 to do that though when you can do the in-place upgrade of Windows 7 Premium to Windows 7 Professional for less than half that amount? If you are somehow using VMLite bringing your own XP license I can understand that but otherwise it doesn't make much sense to me. If you are bringing your own license I would suggest VMWare Player instead of VMLite since VMWare Player will be easier for you to get support from us. Brad uses VMWare Player and I use the full workstatation product. I assume you took a look at the little piece I wrote, http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=17144 Let us know how you fare!

Steel Typhoon
I've read the blurb at CoA. Does anyone know more about the game ... 1. is Steel Typhoons a pen and paper game like harpoon? 2. does anyone know if you can control individual sub, plane, or ship (like in Harpoon)? 3. Or is the game more "massed combat" of navies rather than individual units? 4. solitaire? 1. Yes, it uses the Command At Sea rules, part of the Trilogy of games (Harpoon {modern}, Command at Sea {WWII}, Fear God & Dread Nought {WWI}). 2. Yes you can control the individual platforms 3. More the tactical than the strategic so I think that would be more towards individual units. Still it won't be calculating armor penetration for an hour for a single hit. 4. There is no automated opponent but much like Harpoon you can game out situations playing all sides alone if you so desired.

Clemens' questions about HCDB
No, Open Office does not have the ability to handle MS Access files. However, you can use the MS Access runtime. A very old version is included but not installed with the game (Access 97 runtime). You can use any of the newer 'free' runtimes as well such as Access 2010 runtime http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=10910 (even if you have Windows 7 64-bit I would suggest the 32-bit runtime (aka first link)). We'll be happy to help you get rolling with whatever configuration you choose. In terms of the prolific database maintainers like Enrique and Brad, yes. In terms of people like me who may add 2-3 platforms per year, not so much. You can branch your own copy of the database from CV32/Brad's work (with his permission ideally) and add your own platforms to that or re-purposes any entries you aren't going to use. The bummer is that there is no good way to get your changes back into the public HCDB, you no longer benefit from the edits Brad makes in the future. I have lots of ideas on overcoming and/or marginalizing the limitations but none of the possible solutions will be usable any time in the foreseeable future.

Welcome back to the game Rob! Are you a HC player or a H3 player (or both?). If you are an HC player please post a wishlist at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showforum=35 . That will help narrow down where to make use of your talents. If you are an H3 player maybe we take a look at some of that PHP+MySQL. Any experience modding/customizing Invision Power Board (our forum, a PHP+MySQL beast)? Donate button will almost certainly be paypal but ditto on what Brad said, if you get interested in the programming spend the spare bucks on tools/books/Mt Dew for that.

Funding HarpGamer
With the poll results as a factor, Brad and I chatted last night to form our plan of action. We'll be adding a donation button but will not be adding advertising at this time. The poll indicates advertising would be surprisingly well received and that a donation button should have little negative impact. That was encouraging but didn't change our opinion that we don't want to solicit funds until and unless we need to. Thankfully Brad and I are each currently in a position to be able to fund the site at a level beyond subsistence. We're also okay with the level of funds we are contributing and don't feel it is an excessive burden on our budgets and as such is not souring our Harpoon experience. There is zero expectation that anyone contribute money and for now I'll go so far as to say I discourage those of you posting on a daily/weekly/monthly basis from contributing money. Please do continue to contribute your thoughts, scenarios, databases, and other hard work!

Modeling amphibious assault
I happen to think you can do land combat despite shortcomings there are places where it adds tremendous flair and tension to scenarios, Phillipine Crunch being a good example). The abilities as they stand certainly can reinforce that spotting an opposing ground force can be very difficult. We think of the huge open ocean but if you don't have eyes in the air you can have a troop formation a few miles away and never even notice it. When you do notice it in HC it may have moved a few klicks before you next get eyes in the area, will you even find it again...

Navy tests first of two railgun prototypes
Burke's continue to be built and barring any upsetting changes from Congress the Flight III Burkes will be new built well past 2025. http://assets.opencrs.com/rpts/RL32109_20110419.pdf has what I think is a very nice overview of some of the choices available. The current working plan is to build the Flight III Burkes. DDG-1000 will carry 155mm guns but could be upgraded to railguns at some future date. http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_61-62_ags.htm (a bit outdated but still carries a nice history of the design changes). DDG-1000 is scheduled to be delivered in 2013.

2011.012 Release Notes
JMS, unfortunately the save provided for the submarine stopping does not show the problem. Still hoping someone will come up with one (well, outside of Enrique's one from the start, we know why that happens now, not how to fix it but the mechanism is known).
