Thanks all, and Greg especially for the suggested reading. "Five Love Languages" has been my go to book on relationships for years. I'll share more photos somehwere along the line, just got back from a long 4th of July weekend and will need to catch up again...
  2. You can thank Brains for this, he supposedly innocently sent me to the fantastic Case #3. Anyway, one of the major challenges of HC... http://thecodelesscode.com/case/33
  3. Like date and time math, calculating distance is not as easy as one would think. So pull up your inner game designer or mathematician or GIS analyst and help out a fellow (me). Issues: The Earth is a spheroid, not flat, not a sphere. The platforms in our game do insane things like fly above the surface (more specifically above sea level) and sail below sea level (and if you get fancy some sail above sea level). Changing altitude uses or produces excess energy. Just something to think about. In HC distances are calculated most often along Geodesic (which will stuff into the wrong but well known term Great Circle) routes that place the two platforms at an altitude of zero. When an aircraft at 40,000 feet is 150nm away from base the additional distance the 40,000 feet adds is negligible. However, when an SSM is at 100,000 feet and turns over for its dive to the target, 100k feet may well be a much greater distance than the HC distance (probably a distance of zero). Similarly ground troops 1nm away from each other at altitude of 0 is a very different environment than if one of those soldiers is at 15,000 feet and then other is at -100 feet. A real thought provoker is the situation of a plane flying at 50,000 feet over thousands of miles, the difference between the zero altitude distance and the 50,000 feet distance is significant. If your brain hasn't exploded, think about satellites What do you expect from your Harpoon-style games in terms of distances? Should distances always be calculated as the actual number of meters (pick your scale) the platform would traverse? Should distances always be calculated like they are now, assuming height at sea level? Should there be crossover points where distance stops be calculated at sea level and starts being calculated as actual distance? Most folks in GIS-land only need worry about the sea level distances, frankly they've got it easy!
  4. Download it from: http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=453 Start the game, then load user scenario for the GIUK (original) battleset.
  5. I'd like to agree with the Salamander here but I just don't. The fewer laws the better as far as I'm concerned and of late bloggers and the media have done a stellar job of calling out people lying about the medals they've won. Tough subject, what do the rest of you think? After reading the decision I agree with both sides and can see why the court was split but my natural tendency is to fewer regulations so I'd side with the decision to overturn the Stolen Valor Act.

Oh, somehow I forgot that a sea based x-band radar was hanging out at Pearl too. I wonder if the collection of platforms was in large part for the SM-3 test http://www.spacenews.com/military/120627-s...oys-target.html . I don't think my CG photo has the penant number but we'll see if I can spot it as Lake Erie.
  7. Greg, enjoy! Looking forward to your creations.

A week and a half ago I happily became a married man. We left on our honeymoon to Hawaii early the next morning. The entire time was spent on Oahu and we had a great time together on the north shore and visiting Pearl Harbor. While sunning on the beach the show was: P-3 Orion Coast Guard C-130 variant Seahawk of some kind Coast Guard Dauphin At Pearl Harbor the show (besides the WWII attractions): F-22s in open air revetments F-22 in the air with USS Missouri in the foreground, F-22 doing what looked like a wicked sliding turn at low level, something you'd only want to do with an excess of power F-15s on the ground 4 x Burkes! (so many in one spot was a surprise) 1 x Tico Back to work today, hopefully some Harpoon time later in the week after all of the excitement!
  9. Buddha's article was for the year 2010, not 2011

Yes we are . Harpoon 1 paper is on the way to me in the mail too!
  11. Totally agreed and we were provided zero detail on their contribution to the Navy and country so all we can do is point at the insecure men and in the words of Nelson say "haha." Buddha, I'll give you that something smells amiss though.

, note we're in the Paper Rules area, they don't run on DOS either

Harpoon II arrived today spectacularly packed. I almost felt bad removing it from the acetate envelopes complete with stiff cardstock to keep things from bending. But was I ever glad I broke the seal! Harpoon II looks a lot like Harpoon 3 except I like the organization of Harpoon II better and its greater number of diagrams really impress me. There is a diagram showing a multi-game-turn ship turn instead of having to guess and divine if I move first, turn first, jump around three times,... As for the organization, the rules are categorized by their order in the turn whch I find very helpful. Perhaps more comments once I really have a good read of the rules and annexes (the annexes looking very similar to Harpoon 3).
  14. Definitely time for another leap in ASW detection methods. I tend to think submarines are going to become a lot less hidden (i.e. less capable of hiding) over the next 20 years as cheap sensors are refined and proliferated. Strangely enough, at least in the littorals where a chokepoint can be economically littered with sensors. Hehe, if you can get to the littorals to plant them or if they can swim there themselves which scarily seems entirely possible given the waveriders and such out there.
  15. What he was working on in large part became the HC PE (Platform Editor) with separate interface and data files. The trouble is that the data file is still in MS Access format so would not further merging disparate edits. Still don't count out the other benefits
  16. Now I wish I knew even a smidgen of Access or SVN programming... This kind of tool could have saved many great DB projects in the past. Tony, How much coding would be required to covert the Reimer editor to allow this? Zero The basic principle http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.6/svn.intro.whatis.html You wouldn't get the true beauty of SCC (Source Code Control) at the zero code changes level but you get the ability to go back to any version, split off a different branch of edits, and such. The beauty comes in the ability to merge changes from multiple editors back into the main copy (known as the trunk). With the Reimer editor that last piece of magic isn't possible. Still I view the ability to hop between versions to be very valuable for distributed database editing in that it allows you to deny a whole set of changes.
  17. My first thoughts after reading this: Who is going to manage to get munitions through to Israel so that they can keep fighting? Their warstocks at day 30 are probably long gone. China may not have had nearly the warfighting ability in 1983 that they have today but how are they playing into WWIII? With the Soviet Union engaged in a major Western war, is it China that paradoxically 'saves the day' for the West? I happen to be re-reading Red Storm Rising and I like the dive into the Middle East aspect of it, will there be a Super Power grab for that area in your alternative history?
  18. My thoughts on this are that the Reimer editor should be held in the SVN server I use for HC, one editor checks it out, makes their edits, checks it in. The next editor comes along and does the same. The nice thing about using a source code control server for this is that you can go back to any previous checked in version. Certainly Gunny would only want to approve write access to those he trusts not to cause more harm than good but otherwise it relieves some bottlenecks, not to mention allows you to play around with ideas and share them if they end up being valid. There are other neat add-ons we could do at that point such as automated nightly database builds and setup file creation but that's an advanced topic if using a source code control system for distributed DB editing gets off the ground.
  19. This week we reached 1000 registered users, most of whom aren't spambots! We've reached 1000 before but subsequent purgings of the non-humans pushed us back below that level. The server is getting an upgrade June 5th as well, a doubling of RAM so hopefully some of the performance issues of the last few weeks will subside even though honestly we've probably outgrown the current digs, we'll see! Thanks all, don't forget to post about Harpoon and upload your scens, and participate
  20. That's why it is named Phawk , Polar Hawk, because you all live in Igloos and drag your women around by their hair.
  21. I like it . Now if we can get back to writing some WWIII books instead of spy books or the recent tempting spy + skirmish books I'll really be happy. Got that Clancy, Bond, ...?
  22. Sounds reasonable, might be cheaper and only slightly less capable alternatives in the pipeline though, late model predator evolutions?
  23. I'm taking a wild stab here but I think the answer is to try looking it up on your own and if you can't find it or can't get the PE (Platform Editor) working, holler back. You will generally be looking in the latest HCDB from http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=235 but as recent topics have indicated there are also the HCDA, HCWW, ...
  24. Moved to HUD4/General since this is not a platform issue or request.
  25. I disagree and believe the US would vehemently strike back directly as well as heartily supply Israel in retaliation. It may be my interest in how the Nazi machine worked that colors me towards that statement but I suspect enough of the US would support Israel if attacked by Iran, doubly so if nuclear weapons were used. I can't speak to the rest of the world's opinion.
