Sailors of the year

Very sad. I keep this comment:

Just another example of how the USA’s institutions, honors, and so-called achievements have become meaningless tools for the Political Correctness agenda.
An old shipmate sent me this one: http://angrywhitedude.com/2010/08/all-4-na...ar-are-fillies/

I'd be interested to hear the thoughts any of the members have.

Some of the comments of that post are just offensive. At the end of the day, what you have under your uniform doesn't matter - it's your ability to do the job.

Totally agreed and we were provided zero detail on their contribution to the Navy and country so all we can do is point at the insecure men and in the words of Nelson say "haha."

Buddha, I'll give you that something smells amiss though.

Coming from a "persuasion" viewpoint, I think it's likely that all four women really are at least as good as the men who were nominated for this honor. Why? Because if it was only being done for effect, it's too much that all four are women. It draws attention to itself in the same way that it would if every single sailor honored had been a white male or if all four had been Asian. If someone was "staging" these results, they would have caught this and "fixed" it. You would have had at least one man in the group. It would "look better" that way. So I think this is on the up-and-up. Against the odds? Sure. But sometimes that happens.

Bravo to those young women! I thank them for their service, and for doing their part to keep me and my family safe, and I commend them for their efforts.

The sad thing about this whole issue, in my opinion, is that it shows how badly our society (not just the military) handles the task of improving and celebrating diversity. We should reward merit regardless of race, gender, etc. We should be aware of past injustices (large and small, deliberate and accidental), not to beat ourselves up over them, but so that we can try to avoid repeating them in the future. We should make an effort to treat people with respect and civility. These do not seem like crazy ideas to me. And yet, consider the level of cynicism, animosity, and distrust the very word "diversity" arouses! At the very least, we are not pursuing these goals as well as we could.

Amen.
