The next major version of the forum software requires signing in with the e-mail address associated with your forum account rather than a user name or a display name. Reach out via direct message if you have questions such as "what e-mail address do I use?".

We had an incident this morning of accounts being successfully created, validated, then used to post 50ish garbage posts about airlines. Those accounts have been marked as spammers and IP addressed blocked. The captcha mechanism for the forum has been changed and hopefully won't make your lives more miserable. What will be miserable is that we have re-enabled moderation of all posts. As a result, your posts will not be immediately available for others to read. Those of us caring for the site are hobbyists will real jobs so there could be a delay in approving posts of a day or more but we expect it will be much less. Some of you will have heard already, but for those who have not, I am very sorry to advise that Darren Buckley (HUD3 on this forum and Bucks on the Matrix forums) passed away unexpectedly this past week. We will probably put up a thread elsewhere here for folks to express their condolences.

As announced by Matrix:

Tonight I managed to require that the human-ness question be answered correctly for new users to complete their registration, the previous requirement was any answer at all. Occasionally a spambot does answer correctly but they are few and far between. I don't think any of the 40+ spambots that have flooded the forum since the beginning of 2011 answered the question correctly. Thank you to those who have reported spambot postings, hopefully they will now be slowed down again. I'll add a second human-ness question if need be.

We're very sorry if anyone ran into the site the last 10 hours when I was away and the site home page was hijacked. I'll be doing more forensic work later in the day but all of the related passwords have been changed so if it was a brute force password attack the perpetrators should be slowed down.

I've modified the forum source code to show all members that belong to a particular group (when at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?act=Members). I for instance am part of not only the Staff Pukes group, but also HCBeta (and others), previously the filter by group would only show me in the listing for Staff Pukes, now it will show me in the listing for any of the groups that I am part of. Makes the searches much easier. That said, any official update to the forum software may overwrite my change so holler if it disappears and you want it back.
