Harpooning - Old School!
That is absolutely fascinating. Great research! I, too, seem to be in my retro phase right now, focusing on HCE´s old classical battlesets and even writing scens using the classic battllesets and their stock database. Maybe it´s just the midliefe crisis, but I´d like to call it scientific interest or R&D Fact is that I get "that same old feeling" when playing the old classical GIUK, NACV, MEDC and IOPG scens under HCE; it is like in 1991. Oh well... Regards, Ralf

File Name: Hemphill´s Ordeal File Submitter: RKoelbach File Submitted: 24 May 2009 File Category: GIUK DB Used: Stock Database Authors: Ralf Koelbach Battleset-GIUK: .sc1 - Orig - Original Hello, attached the third and last scenario based on DeGoey´s Harpoon Battlebook - "Hemphill´s Ordeal". You are ordered to move a small through the Atlantic close to Kevlavik in order to unload. The way ahead is dangerous and time is short. Be quick, but very cautious at the same time. You are outgunned, this scen is a heavily modified version of DeGoey´s original recommendation. The Soviet side now is really strong. Playing red side is possible, maybe interesting for newbies and backcomers. Have fun! Ralf Click here to download this file

HUD3 Update
Hello, Darren, you´re exaggerating. You´ve done at least 90 per cent of the whole work, with us others doing the 10 remaining per cent. Anyway, it was a pleasure supporting you in this project. As your personal Drill Sergeant I have to add some orders though: "Time to finish the job! Get the missing stock scens / Battle Sets released asap / pronto pronto!" Ralf

AAR - Somali Pirates
"Somali Pirates" Author: Freek Schepers Game Engine: ANW 3.9.3 Database: PDB My first impression: Looks like an usual scenario. The thematic issue is up to date. I´m curious how this will work out for Nato side. November, 1st, 2008, 12:00 - On we go! Ok, mission is to guard the Norway, Kimi and Austrain Trader. Thus I have to find them and vector my vessels in their directions. 1. 12:02 Found the three HVUs and plotted intercept courses for my ships. Oh Lord - so many ships on the ocean and so few guardians! 2. 12:50 Freek is really tough with the player. Just detected that he has unloaded the Harpoons from Nato´s ships 3. 15:20 Waiting for the enemy. A classical "Needle in the Hay" 4. 16:45 A Cigarette racer is firing ! Where and at which target? It´s the Samarkand. 7% damage so far. New HVU, yes - but I have to guard all MRCH if possible, I guess. Too far out. My scarce force are overstretched. 5. 17:40 Closing in; Samarkand now suffers from 10% damage. 6. 21:28 Samarkand up to 42% damage - and nothing I can do it looks like. 7. 22:52 A fishing vessel fires at a Merchant 8. This happens on De Ruyter´s way towards Samarkand - I´m lucky this time: The fishing vessels is sunk by missile fire. 9. 23:14 My frind, the Cigarette racer, has been redetected! Second Day: November, 2nd 10. 00:25 De Ruyter comes closer 11. 01:10 Dutch triumph: De Ruyter sinks the Cigarette racer, thus scoring its second kill 12. 02:50 A Sampan firing at another merchant ! It is the Lauren, getting a pounding. 13. Brave De Ruyter is instantly redirected and on its way. 14. 06:26 Another Sampan firing. The Al Hasan gets 5% damage. How to secure all these merchants with that few assets and ASuW incapable helos? Not spoken of my missing Harpoons. 15. 08:40 De Ruyter sinks this Sampan, too. Three cheers for the Netherlands. Will it be enough? 16. All three HVUs are now closely guarded by Nato vessels. That is all I can do. 17. 12:00 Game Over - lost! I failed to prevent two MRCH from taking 1% damage. And I amanged to score only three kills, not four. A most interesting scenario, Freek! Ralf

AAR China: 2014 #01: The Fight for the Islands
AAR "China: 2014 #01: The Fight for the Islands" Author: Klaus Behrmann Game Engine: Harpoon 3.6.2 Database: DB2000 V 10.0.0 Start: April, 12th, 2014, 18:00 I choose Japanese Side 1. At 18:20 I have AAw missions for both Naha and Nyutabaru set up. In addition my Task Force has two helos on sonobuyo station all time aloft 2. Behind the fighter CAP a Sentinel is patrolling near Nyutabaru and an Orion is heading southwest in order to gather intelligence 3. The US air base Kadena has fighters and a Sentry up, thus screening my SAG and both Kadena and Naha 4. At 18:35, The Sentry has detected Chinese vessels and fighters; Eagles are vectored West. 5. At 18:48 I launch four ASM armed Orions in order to make the Sentry´s results count 6. 18:58: Dog fights between Chinese and US aircraft are minutes ahead. What is that Sentry doings o far out? 7. 19:25 There is a Taiwanese SAG in the game, too. So we have four sides. 8. 1940: Hostilities have started. Lost two Phantoms due to missiles 9. 20:30 My four Orions got in shooting positions and fired their ASMs at the Chinese SAG 10. 21:00 Some things went terribly wrong. The four Orins were intercepted on their way back. The Japanese Task Force was pounded, one ship sunk. 11. 21:05 Another attack with Silkworm ASM on my Task Force 12. 21:08 Three hits on the Kongo 13. 21:15 Another ship hit, the LST Osumi. Missile type: Kazoo B. Long range ASM. 14. 21:17 More Kazoo ASM inbound. The Kongo´s SM-2MR magazines are nearly depleted 15. 21:18 DDH Kurama hit, LST Shimokita hit 16. 22:03 My second wave of Orions has been shot down Second day, April 13th, 2014 17. Preparing counterstrikes with my subs 18. One Orion left for recce just redetected the Hangzhou ! 19. Immediately afterwards SS 591 Michishito launches four Harpoons at it 20. 01:40: The Orion pays the price and is shot down 21. SS 591 attack has failed, no hits. Preparing second Harpoon salvo 22. 03:30 Second volley failed, too 23. 04:37 Orion lost 24. 05:00 SS 591 fires torps at Luda I and Haribing 25. 05:14 Luda I dead, but SS 591 too; sunk by Orlan torp 26. 05:15 coordinated harpoon salvo from SS 593 and SS 589 heading for Hangzhou 27. Hit ! Hangzhou down to 4 knots, heavily damaged 28. Hangzhou sinking. The major surface vessel is dead. 29. Time to move in with the two remaining subs. 30. 08:50 Subs are closing. No more air attacks since several hours. Reloading or did I get the bombers and fighter bombers? 31. 10:19 Two torps fired at Jiangwei 32. 10:26 hit and Jiangwei sunk 33. 10:56 Two torps fired at Yuting 34. 11:02 one hit 35. 11:30 two more torps fired at Yuting 36. 11:35 Yuting hit and sunk ! The resume until that point displayed a draw: I got enough Chinese vessels, but lost a sub and a LST. Great scen ! Ralf

Shakedown Scenarios
Hi Pete, Never heard of this. Perhaps it's already "out there". I have written this battleset first for Harpoon 3 v 3.6 using db2000. Then I converted the scens for ANW and HUD 3. Herman and I rebuilt them for 3.6/ANW under PDB. And I have started to rebuild them for HCE, using Renés database. Those already done are in Rénes Baltic Battleset. But we will make an own HCE PASON battleset of it, thus there will be a distinct beginner´s battlset. Regards, Ralf

Vote now for the 2008 Pooners!
Hi, I vote for Russel Sharp as Pooner 2008 and for Jesse Spears as lifetime Pooner. Russel has done a lot to make the turnaround regarding ANW´s quality possible. He listens to the players and always displays an gentlemanlike attitude. As to Jesse Spears: Look what Tony has written; nothing to add. Best Regards, Ralf

Ralf´s Wishlist
Hello, a little addendum: - please, please a new scenario editor with a map worth its name. It is horrible designing with that old 16-bit-thing. While the game engine has become prettier, starting SE is always depressing for me. So if you want to have more scens - make scen design fun!

File - WPac - MOB
Hello, I´m to in this scen now. Yes, that is a monster. So far I have lost two ships - one was the "Edward Ladner" (good ole Ed...) On the other side I downed over 70 ac so far, but that is not so much if I read the posts here. It will be a long, tough way through the Pacific I guess. More to follow. Regards, Ralf

File - NACV - Red October
Hello guys, hi Mark, played it through. It looks like I was lucky. South of Iceland three torps materialized straight from nowwhere, but I evaded. Shortly after that, I was awarded with the minimum vic cons fulfilled. Then nothing more happened. Maybe I found the golden path. My Typhoon made its way straight through the Atlantic to Norfolk. But there I didn´t achieve the Total vic cons. Despite I was close to Norfolk and had about one day to go, I was not rewarded. Mark - maybe the on station rectangular is a bit too small? All in all an interesting experience. How to make it harder? More subs lurking in the Typhoon´s path. More long range ASW birds... Regards, Ralf

Scenario authors
Hi Brad, You´re absolutely right - no scenarios, no future. As to me: I have been "down under" in real life (Work) for some months, but things may become better in the next time. I´ll restart scenario writing asap. Keep on with the good work on HCE! It´s the best Harpoon Classic ever. Best Regards, Ralf

Hello, What an amgnificient AAR ! This one alone was worth writing the scenario. If V 1.0 was joy, you should love V 1.1 Thank you for playing and commenting it. Best Regards, Ralf Koelbach

Scenario for HCE/EC2003 GIUK: Baltic Fury
Hello, ok, I´ve been deep enough into the scen to write a short resume for DarkNite´s scen: - the Russian´s air strikes on the blue bases are not hard enough IMO. I recommend to use more long-range large bombers on strike missions - the red invasion fleet is too weak, I think. There should be better AAW cover for it.. I have no problem defending the choke point OAb - the ac ratio is too easy for blue: 1:2 is mo match for a human; IMO the AI needs at least 1:3 in order to have a chance. Besides these minor issues this is a really enjoyable and clever scenario! Ralf

Hello, WestPac is becoming home of the monsters <g>. If Akula is pulling in a monster, maybe we can have a small scen to round things out (and maybe get Ralf's blessing for Backyard II to round it out at three scens instead of two). I wouldn't mind seeing Brad's Oubliette as the small scen, thoughts? Of course you are welcome to include Backyard 2 - I feel honoured if you do so! Best Regards, Ralf
