  1. File Name: F-94C Starfire in Korea File Submitter: broncepulido File Submitted: 15 May 2010 File Category: WestPac This was in the begining a test scenario to test unguided air-to-air rockets, basically in the F-94C Starfire, and his effectiveness (I was very dubtious about the capability in the game of a unguided rocket to hit in a flying airplane). And I'm not detected crashes in this scenario, at least for now. But now I think it can be very simple introductory scenario to Harpoon HCE, mostly for old time interception and worth of release it, with the flavour of the early 1950s. The situation report is very simple, your're at the command of the 39th Fighter Interceptor Squadron near 1954, temporarily deployed from Komaki AFB, Japan, to South Korea (and very reinforced in strenght), and equipped with the new Lockheed F-94C Starfire (derived from the F-80/T-33), all-weather interceptor exclusively armed with unguided air-to-air rockets (the famous 2.75" FFAR Mk4 Mighty Mouse), to defend Seul from upcoming streams of communist bombers breaking the 1953 ceasefire ! And remember, it's only a very simple and unrealistic test scenario, but fun of play, you can kill a lot of enemy planes. As outcome of the test, we will reduce in next iterations from the 50to65 DB the air PH/PK of entry 18965, 6x70mm FFAR RP, from 30% to a more realistic 15% (i.e. a individual rocket PH/PK of 2.5, as in my old stimates). And you can verify as the rockets are more effective against the less maneouvrable soviet bombers as against the nimble and agile MiG-15 Fagot, as in the real life. Click here to download this file

  2. Ever fascinating russian SAM systems ....
  3. For me Harpoon not it is about playability, is about simulation. You can simulate every historical platform, every scenario situation, and hypotetical situations. For me is more a research instrument than a game, for playing I can like more other things, as Heros of Might and Magic IV And about playing Harpoon, for me is more about simulate historical situations, playing several times the same scenario and obtain some outputs of the outcome and demise of the play. Multiplayer game don't add more at my interest in Harpoon. Also, speaking only about playability, with almost infinite pausible scenarios and multiple historical platforms, and with the initial aleatorial placement in the map and the aleatorial presence of units or not presence of the same in the scenarios (adjustable in percentage), for me the pure playability is also near infinite.
  4. Some notes about the planes in the 50to65 DB: The warplanes in this Data Base are basically my work and my possible fault !!! I was raised reading about these planes of this time period in the Popular Mechanics magazine, purchased some years earlier by my father (the old man purchased the 1947-1957 magazines near 1966). Somehow I grew with these planes, and was a time period of very great and revolutionary advances and but only now I can appreciate them entirely and produce this small tribute to them, to the people who designed them, those who constructed them, those who maintained them, those who flew them, and those who dreamed about them. Now the Cold war is over for near twenty years, and now we known a lot about those old and almost forgetted planes, their weapons and electronic systems than 15 years ago, and with a lot of declassification and clarification about his performances and characteristics. I’m particularly proud of my research about ASW planes and sonobuoys, about airguns, about the B-52 and other planes ECM, and also about rare soviet/russian planes, and about other more or less knowed types that will join to the database in due time. But I consider necessarily to write these small notes on the topic: Added flag codes in the text description, for sake of playability. No more necesity to open the DB playing a game for known if a plane is or not Inflight refuelling or Nap of Earth capable ! Planes data are based in independent research, only subsidiarily in Harpoon Annex data. FLIR are used also to represent other detection or illumination technics, as optical cameras (in recconaisance planes), searchlights, or flares in night interdictors. Generally, ESM Level 1 are represented by RWR, ESM Level 2 are represented by ESM, and ESM Level 3 are represented by RWR+ESM. ESM also can represent extensive communications suites in airborne command post and similar planes. Height bands are only indicative and aproximative, Very High can change with the period and performance of the planes, and so is represented in my DB. Usually for me High is 7500m-14500m, and Very High 14500m+ (reserved basically for bisonic fighters with variable geometry intake, and some curious types, as MiG-19 and U-2, by sake of very diverse designs). The in-service years are indicative, and basically refered to front line squadron service, not to isolated planes used in ancillary tasks, as target-tug or liaison. The planes without yy or xx sufixe on his name are completly finished, also with text description (as in B-52G Phase II/III Stratofortress (1961-1963) ) The planes with yy sufixe are completely finished and are technical and historically verified, but yet without text description (as in Yak-28P Firebar-A(early)(1964-1967)yy ) The planes with xx sufixe on his name are verified as playables and also are the corresponding guns added, but without fine historical or technical verification of all his data (as in F-84F Thunderstreak (1956-1966)xx ) Enrique Mas
  5. Researching data for Harpoon, I've finded Vikrant preserved as museum in Mumbai, in this interesting site, Warbirdsofindia.com : http://www.warbirdsofindia.com/maharashtra/ins-vikrant.html But not without problems of continuity, I see ... http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mu...how/5798936.cms
  6. Impressive images: real sea, real people, real boats (very small boats ) ..... There is life beyond Harpoon
  7. Yes, I'm often in the same situation. Only after the game play I open the scenario file and read the victory conditions (for sake of elude spoilers). And yes, many times the victory conditions are difficult, unimaginable or impossible to fill, but you have whipped out all the oposition forces in that same scenario Sometimes are dubtious victory conditions or clearly unthinkable (as to imagine a determinated map rectangle where you must positionate some indetermined forces, and the map rectangle not is neither clearly determinated), but other times obscure victory conditions are the result of the scenario designer pretending to create a fog of war situation (in the real world many times you don't known what you must do to win, many times the situation it's not as clear as you sink the enemy CV, you win ), or to represent the incertitudes of the war outcome, or to represent a determinated political element (as if a merchant ship obtain a damage point, that's a representation of the merchant ship boarded/capturated by the pirate forces ), but I think in those situations, the scenario designer must write clearly those obscure victory conditions, or the scenario would be frustrating and unplayable.
  8. This last finding sembles conclusive, but a open retaliatory strike is useless and only can complicate more the situation. I suppose the answer is near a decapitation strike, the Great Leader and his ancestors are experiended and worth of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bak_Jeong-hee...Blue_House_Raid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decapitation_strike (curiously, mentionated Debt of Honor as seminal work, and also this work, previouly unknown for me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cuban_Mis...econd_Holocaust ) And far out of this topic, very interesting and colorfull the recent Korean History, cars, electronics and movies aside : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Assa...ean_politicians http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahn_Doo-hee
  9. Stealth is the word, I suppose ...
  10. First images of FF Aquitaine (near 6.000 tons), first ship of a new series, literally unveiled in presence of the french president Nicolas Sarkozy (in french): http://www.meretmarine.com/article.cfm?id=113073
  11. Absolutely out of topic, but I known some or most of us are long time interested in Theoretical Physics, Science Fiction and Cosmology. A friend of mine (incidentally, PsyOps Officer in the Spanish Army, a woman with a spiced madness touch, and I'm almost sure she ignores my interests in these matters) had sent me casually this link This documentary has remembered me the classical Powers of Ten (from the far 1968, from a world without Internet, GoogleEarth and almost without computers, but with hand-drawn animation and Cold War and Vietnam War in full activity), I don't remember very well when I saw it the first time, perhaps watching TV near 1970, and I think it was referenced or featured a lot of years later by Carl Sagan in Cosmos. Watched for me today, Powers of Ten is superior to present day documentaries about the same topic. And today, thanks to the digital miracle, is a matter of minutes to research, to remember, to cross references and to obtain a satisfactory result as this: Transcendence of Powers of Ten: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powers_of_Ten http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/powers-of-ten/ Official website: http://www.powersof10.com/ Interactive variant inspired in Powers of Ten, with mention to some more modern theories, as string theory and fractal multiverse: http://www.theuniversesolved.com/powersof10.asp?r=1&p=1 A variant of the original documentary, and very near to it (I think embedded in a japanese TV program): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUUkjWsNC9k...feature=related Watch it and enjoy it.
  12. Mmmm, sorry, thanks, nothing detected my poor and free Avira. It's easy to find russian web sites with malware, later I will revise my HD. I've not find other fast reference in the net about Popovkas ... Better try: http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/battleships6.htm http://www.bibliobase.com/history/readersc...earadmiralp.htm http://www.mywire.com/a/Oxford-Enc-Maritim...-Popov/9480655/

  14. This topic remember me about the whole fiasco of the Kaiten as effective weapon: From http://combinedfleet.com/ships/kaiten
  15. In the aft of the island mock up we can see a structure very similar to the chinese phased array radar (HQ-9 PAR in the DB/Type 348?) as in the DDG Type 52C Luyang-II/Lanzhou class, perhaps the chinese CV will be equipped with the associated HQ-9 area defence SAM ? http://www.sinodefence.com/navy/surface/type052c_luyang2.asp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanzhou_class_destroyer#Radars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_348_Radar
  16. Very interesting and enlightening. I will use it as source for some papers. Thanks you very much.
  17. we can't install defensive guns in WWII and early Cold War bombers We could not do it before, either. Only Mounts have adjustable arc, and we can't add Mounts to aircraft. If we made airborne guns capable of 360 deg coverage, it would have negative effects on dogfighting and strafing. Ok, good for me, we can live with that compromise solution,
  18. With the limit of we can't install defensive guns in WWII and early Cold War bombers
  19. I'm a great fan of the period, and the happy owner of some titles, also Second War at Sea titles (including the discontinued Hispano-American War in 1898). I've never played it, but I think there're clear and playable games, with a lot of good ideas, as the ship range, endurance and days at sea limitated by fuel load, abstract orders in the strategic map (with the limitated communications of the era), abstract convoy and shore bombardment rules, naval leaders, campaing rules, and historical research. I regret to have not purchased the Russian-Japanese game, and it's now unavailable. I've purchased the games as reading, inspiration and research material, and I'm not dissapointed. And we've commented sometimes the interesting readings in the company web site.
  20. I don't see the Greenpeace or Sea Shepherd little boats in the photo, they must be out of frame ...
  21. A very interesting russian report on Firefox, and also well translated. Definitely the wing gloves structures are part of AESA radar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW0x2EDghbE...player_embedded
  22. Hi Don, I don't use Firefox, but thanks by the warning. Casually I used it some weeks ago at another place, and I constated was faster than my usual Windows Internet Explorer and I was thinking in change the thing (I'm not a PC connaisseur for 20 years, and I will not to be for the next 20 years ) My motto in computers is if it works, don't improve it
  23. Problems apparently resolved, SS Tunku Abdul Rahman sailing submerged without problems (in French): http://www.meretmarine.com/article.cfm?id=112795
  24. Good news for UK, definitly two more Astute class SSN to be build and possibly a seventh boat, in part to guarantee the permanent building of submarines and the transition to the future class of british SSBN (from Mer et Marine, in French): http://www.meretmarine.com/article.cfm?id=112792 The same information in the Wiki, I see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astute_class_submarine#Boats
