Bad Welding in US Subs, again
In the news, but they're not novelty news: http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/NGC-In...5468/#more-5468 But in retrospective, the case is worst. I remember to read some time ago the same thing in Norman Polmar & K.J. Moore "Cold War Submarines" about the very bad welding in Los Angeles and Ohio classes, giving for the Ohio class SSBN a test depth of 300 meters and for Los Angeles/Providence/San Juan SSN a test depth of only 290 meters (in consecuence, both classes only capable of intermediate depth in the PC game scale), compared with the gived test depth in the same book for the previous Thresher/Permit and Sturgeon classes of 400 meters (both classes capable of deep depth in the PC game scale), or the 396 meters stated in the same book for the Seawolf class SSN (I've changed the depth to intermediate for Ohio and Los Angeles in my personal DBs). http://www.subsim.com/books/coldwarsubs.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUBSAFE

Do you want a Mirage III in your backyard ?
50 years ago the first Mach 2 fighters ... I was a very little boy, and the Tanguy and Laverdure comic strips configure in great part my future life ... I see now the things I was thinking were great, now also are great and remembered. I'm happy now. The Mirage IIIE is property of Albert Uderzo (first drawer of Tanguy&Laverdure and Asterix comic strips), purchased 2006, it's in an "hangarette" in his backyard, in Les Yvelines (I've read this in this month Air Fan magazine). I also remember now Albert Uderzo, 82 years old, likes also the Ferrari cars Another nostalgia made real, me and a bit battered preseries Mirage IIIA and Super Mystere B2 http://haciaaguasoscuras.blogspot.com/2007...ho-retraso.html

Bizarre Missile Incident
Reading a lot about the 50's and 60's warplanes, I've find this curious and hilarious incident previouly unknown to me, in http://www.vectorsite.net/avjavlin.html The incident as relation with the little known Beira Patrol: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beira_Patrol http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0JI...55/ai_87146676/ Not mentionated in the interesting site http://www.britains-smallwars.com/main/index1.html The incident remembers me also about sci-fi tales with syntetic bugs or microorganisms eating materials as plastics or metals, and getting out of control. I remember also the actual search of bacteries for eating chemical, oil, or radioactive wastes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ananda_Mohan_...scientific_work http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudomonas#U...ediation_agents http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinococcus_r...ns#Applications More surrealist application ever:

UK defenceless without ASW aircrafts ?
In short, UK retires the Nimrod MR.2 in March 2010, and it must wait to 2012 to see the Nimrod MRA.4 in service. A two year gap without ASW nor maritime patrol aircrafts, bad thing for a insular state: http://www.meretmarine.com/article.cfm?id=112034 (in french) http://australianaviation.com.au/uk-brings...mr2-retirement/ Some relevant excerpts of the Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker-Siddeley_Nimrod : On 15 December 2009, the Ministry of Defence announced that the introduction to service of the Nimrod MRA4 will be delayed until 2012 as part of wide-ranging defence spending cuts

Ramming LCS-2 ?
Watching this images, I was thinking if Ady Gil/Earthrace is a trimaran, and LCS-2 is a trimaran, is the bigger pretended weapon of LCS-2 the ram ? (if not, why is the anchor in LCS-2 placed in front of the bow ?) http://www.ussindependenceship.org/overview_ship.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthrace (incidentally, Sagunto is very near my home town). At least, I hope LCS-2 must be stronger than Ady Gil ...

Submarine Films
This topic was initiatiated at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?s...amp;#entry18886 but after the long and painful writing below, I think it's better begin this new topic I can't say what's my favorite submarine film (in general, for me, the war movies are bad movies), and I remember my grandfather was submariner (sunked in C-3 by a torpedo fired by U-34). But some unknown mad Spaniard had presented a truckload of submarine films someplace in the Net (in spanish), and I can now refresh memories with some titles, some of them unknown to me previously, other famous films, other apparently infamous films, and of course I've not see all of them, but this is a relation of some of those films (I shown also for your fun the "imaginative", "asimetrical" or "diversive" spanish movie titles)(And some other information about this topic in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine_films ): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Enemy_Below (Duelo en el Atlántico). http://www.answers.com/topic/depth-charge-2008-action-film (Amenaza en las Profundidades). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Seahawk Film title Submarine Seahawk, Spencer G. Fractional Orbital Bombardment System (FOBS)
For years dreaming with FOBS, after reading about it at very short age in Popular Mechanics (really, in the traslated Mecánica Popular, Edición Caribe), I remember also a very short mention of FOBS silos in "The Kremlin Cardinal". And at last, it was a real menace, not only a propaganda atrezzo. Some other links I'm remembering now: http://www.astronautix.com/craft/ogch.htm (origin of the quote) http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/tsiklon.htm

RCS and Radar questions
Thanks for the answer and for the new idea, Warhorse64, it's another interesanting focus of the issue. No very modellable in the presente state of HCE (and I also want keep it simple), but I will reckon about it ....

Water Depth Determination?
For me the best land forces scenario is Stalintc's Philippine Crunch: http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=297 Small air and naval forces in support of a realistic land target, the land target must be occupied by the land forces to win. I play it sometimes for relax, and to test modified land platforms (in my personal DB I've transformed the generic MBT and AFV in historic types, also the artillery units). And it's a very tricky scenario

Gun Mount ROF + PH + DP
Missiles are indeed 'interesting'. Your phrasing made me chuckle! SAMs should adhere to ROF over the 60 second period but they are not evening distributed over the 60 seconds and many circumstances (target saturated already) may mean far fewer than the ROF # of missiles being fired. Thanks, TonyE, you your answer relieves me greatly, I'm not a total fool He had given up years ago, almost from the beginning, understanding the rate of fire mechanism of the missiles, and now I see that probably it was right on having resigned And yes, the other latent question is point defence mechanism ....

RCS and Radar questions
Thanks you very much, TonyE. I remember the existence of the RCS spreadsheet, and it should be somewhere in my HD, but I was editing RCS for years without it, only "rounding" the RCS to the more similar type/size of platform. But I will see it now another time. Was only yesterday when he saw the aforementioned discrepances between modern and WWII ( and one of my primary interest is to revamp my old World War One DB for HCE, but I want also RCS in those platforms ) Well, we can wait "other"comments in the next days. Mrrry Holidays to the Harpoon Comunity ( I hope don't thinking in Harpoon DB editing the next ten hours, at least )

Take-off and Landing distances
I undertook a half hour search for my notes too and found nothing, someone stole the runway length data! I really don't remember read this runway length data never, and I'm now near ten years absorbed by the DB editing world, perhaps his existence it's a Midnight Winter Dream ?

Bad News
I'm sorry, yes, very bad day for computer crash. At least you can watch NORAD Santa I'm working now with several external Hard Drives, where I'm saving my works in progress, ever expecting the next computer crash

RCS and Radar questions
Waiting for your comments or answers about RCS, and messing with the DBs. Some weird ideas about RCS surge in my concentrated mind. Some personal weird ideas about RCS modifiers: +1 for each fuselage boom extra (Example P-38 Lightning +1). +1 for each tail plane extra (Example: Constellation +2, two extra tail governors). +1 for each upper or low turret (Example: B-17G +2, upper and lower turrets). +1 for each propeller, a rotating propeller is a big radar target (Example: Me-109 +1, the compressor blades in a jet fighter is radar detectable, but more smaller, and stealthed in F-117 and posterior types). +1 for each engine pod (Example: B-52 +4, S-3 Viking +2, Mosquito +2 (and another +2 because the two propeller), A-3 Skywarrior +2, B-57 Intruder +0, jet engines integrated in the wing). +1 for each extra plane (Example: Fokker DR.1 +2, is triplane). +1 for each radar search antenna (Example: EC-121D +2, upper and lower dome, weather or ranging radars are very small and don’t count, the radar antenna is in effect a very detectable item). +1 for external stores habitually carried (as almost every modern plane). -1 for only internal weapons (as MiG-15 or F-86 used without drop tanks). -1 for blended fuselage and wings (Vulcan, Tu-16, Victor, B-35) -1 for no tail unit (Mirages, Vulcan, B-35). -1 for wood/fabric/plastic in construction (basically WWI planes, but also some rarities, as Mosquito, or more exotic types).

Take-off and Landing distances
Thanks for your wide answer, really we only need a rule determinating what runway lenght is STOL, Small, Medium, Large or Very Large, the take-off and landing distance is an accesible data. Now messing with EC-121 and variants, after the reading of 4 or 5 books about the plane. In the monographic books it's easy to find take-off and landing distancies (reading a lot of russian books those days, also), and it's a pity not to be able to use them because this issue.
-
Take-off and Landing distances
Sorry, I will mean STOL ... I edit my previous question, for sake of clarification.
-
Take-off and Landing distances
Which are the estimated values of runway length for take-off and landing? Is this hypothesis correct? I will wellcome any values: STOL aircraft: 50 meters or lesser. Small aircraft: 51-500 meters. Medium aircraft: 501-1000 meters. Large aircraft: 1001-2000 meters. Very Large aircraft: 2001 meters or more.

RCS and Radar questions
I'm messing with various time period databases. I know the Radar Cross Section is a doubtful issue, stealth topic aside, but I see very great differences in RCS in WWII DB and the other DBs. As example, P-3 Orion and B-17 Superfortress are planes of very similar size, P-3 in ordinary DB as a RCS of 159, and in WWII DB we find: B-17 RCS=86, and B-29 RCS=88 (And all these planes are with propellors, I know a rotating propellor has a big RCS), Or in smaller planes, P-51 Mustang RCS=70, and the similar size A-37 Dragonfly RCS=137, and I see these are consistent differences between the DBs. Why these enormous differences ? Also, I don't know if it's a relationated issue, the probability detection in WWII DB radars is higher, in a lot of radars is 70% (and they are old and limitated radars), but in the ordinary or modern DBs the probability detection of not avanced radars (i.e., not SAR, AESA, MTI or similar) is habitually 50%. The same question as above. I repeat, I know it may be a controversial issue, or it can be only a mishap issue, but ... some comments or answers, please. And Happy Holidays to everyone

Gun Mount ROF + PH + DP
For me ROF 6 mean 3 things come out every 60 s., or a shot every 20s. for each barrel. It's verifiable playing scenarios, reading the gun actions and the associate ROF data. In guns at least, I don't understand the game mechanism about missile rate of fire. And I don't know nothing neither about point defence.

Water Depth Determination?
I don't like the unreal and ridiculous, click fest, RTS games, but Harpoon is actually a real RTS game because the game scale is designed to be near real And yes, as in reality, you can't control everything in a big scenario, because in the real world a little ship in the map margin has his own local command, managing the incoming situations. You can find this capability in Harpoon 2/ANW and derivatives, but I don't like Harpoon 2, I want all the historic replayability, control of the simulation capability, and game flavour for me

New big CVHs for Japan
Japan has ordened two big CVH, in his previous line of building aircraft carrier ships. Named 22DDH, they're 248 meters long and 30.000-40.000 tons displacement (I suppose capables for 20-30 aircraft, including F-35B). The infophotos in the article send a good perception of proportion between the old and new classes (in French): http://www.meretmarine.com/article.cfm?id=112007
