December 20, 200916 yr Japan has ordened two big CVH, in his previous line of building aircraft carrier ships. Named 22DDH, they're 248 meters long and 30.000-40.000 tons displacement (I suppose capables for 20-30 aircraft, including F-35B). The infophotos in the article send a good perception of proportion between the old and new classes (in French): http://www.meretmarine.com/article.cfm?id=112007
December 20, 200916 yr Thanks Broncepulido, Although my French is limited to about Combien du Pain, the pictures, particularly the comparison photos are great. As they say speak a thousand words. They sure don't look like destroyers to me.
December 20, 200916 yr They sure don't look like destroyers to me. 'Through-Deck Cruisers' then, perhaps?
December 20, 200916 yr They sure don't look like destroyers to me. 'Through-Deck Cruisers' then, perhaps? How about them cutting to the chase and naming them CVH or Amphibious Assault Ship.

December 21, 200916 yr How about them cutting to the chase and naming them CVH or Amphibious Assault Ship. Well, yeah, except that a lot of the locals would object to the break with the whole "self-defense" paradigm ... Yeah, I do realize it is a constitutional issue for them, but I personally believe it is time for them to call a spade a spade.

December 21, 200916 yr From a purely domestic PoV, you're almost certainly right. OTOH, I'm not so sure it would be a good idea to stir up the neighbors the way that would ... Yeah, but it just seems like they and their neighbors simply avoid the (past) issue instead of addressing it. They have 50 something years now of acting according to their constitution. But the fact remains that they do now have a handful of multiple thousand ton ships capable of launching rotory wing, and possibly fixed wing aircraft. Calling them destroyers or cruisers does not change their layout, loadout, or true capabilities. Eitherway, our discussion will not change their or their neighbors outlook. Happy holidays.
