2010.006 Release Notes
HCE - 2010.006 - 2010/05/21 =========================== + Chg:0000 GE Changed logic of Ship vs Sub attack type dialog so that unavailable attack type won't be chosen. (thanks CV32) + Chg:B169 GE Yet another arc induced crash fixed, was examining group type instead of unit type. (thanks Divefreak) http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...amp;showbug=169 + Chg:B160 GE Code fudged minimum Annex E range to 2.5nm so ease maneuvering for a shot. The fudge number has been changed to 1.0nm for this build meaning ASROC, ahead thrown DC, and DC type weapons now can be used at 1.0nm even if their stated range is less. (thanks miller7219) http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...amp;showbug=160

User Manual draft review Wed 7pm Central Time on IRC
Wombat showed up as well as Brad and I. We came up with a nice laundry list. As always short of what we'd like but a nice series of changes to be made nonetheless. Once this one goes out the door you folks are always welcome to improve documentation, Miller7219 has put in some good effort, most of which has already been integrated into the draft manual.

User Manual draft review Wed 7pm Central Time on IRC
Anyone who is interested in seeing a draft copy of the user manual and adding input is invited to join us on IRC Wed at 7pm Central time. When you arrive and show interest we'll e-mail you the Word document. IRC Server: irc.stratsims.com Port: 6667 or 8067 Channel: #harpgamer If you don't have an IRC client you can try the Java clients on the left side of http://www.harpgamer.com or you can try a simple client I wrote, http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=281 PS, working on the release is one reason you aren't seeing many builds this month...

Questions!
I assume HCE can be purchased from South Korea via the Matrix online store. If not, yes, we can help you get it like you got HC Gold. So if you have any problems, let us know and we'll assist. We here cannot give you the WestPac beta installer. AGSI requested we remove it around the time HCE was released. The WestPac beta was just that, a beta and HCE is so much more capable and stable anyway that it was a move we were comfortable making to stop distributing the WestPac beta. As for the rest, yes it is fiction and designers are free to assign sides as they see fit. I appreciate hearing your opinion on the reaction though, it is the first feedback I've seen about the sides assignment being taken so seriously.

Questions!
You would need the WestPac beta which traditionally came as HCG-wpac-2003.16b3.exe . However, as Brad stated, you'll find a much better game (including an expanded WestPac) if you purchase HCE. The game has progressed much since that beta build. In addition, most of the WestPac scenarios at HarpGamer will provide a more enjoyable experience than those older ones at HarpoonPages (though they'll still work with HCE).

Questions!
Welcome HMS Let's try scenarios first, holler back when you've got that down... 1. Assume I want to play From Russia With Love. 2. Download the scenario from the link above. 3. Extract the contents of the zip file to your HC directory (C:\Matrix Games\HCE by default). When you get the hang of it, you can unzip elsewhere. 4. The scenario info on the download page indicated the official database, that means HCDB, grab it from HCDB Download and unzip it to your HC directory as in step 3. 5. Note that you chose a WestPac scenario so you'll be opening the game to the WestPac battleset. 6. Start the game. 7. Select the "Western Pacific Battleset" and click OK. There is a chart matching scenario filename extensions (*.sc?) with battlesets at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=2380 8. At the next screen click "User Scenario" 9. Select FRWL2B.SCq from the file listing. Tada, you are playing the scenario you downloaded.

Tico's wishlist
In the early 90s HC sold quite a lot of copies so there was financial incentive to create HOL. Free HOL during testing was great but as I'm sure you saw, the limited user-base once it became fee-based didn't support the cost of maintaining the game and reducing the bevvy of crashes. It isn't germaine to the discussion but we've not been able to turn up the code to the HOL client let alone the server mechanism (the server mechanism {UNIX} would have been almost impossible to revive today and the rights probably wouldn't be obtainable anyway). What would it take to make it happen? This is a community supported and maintained product so making forward progress requires a lot of free time from the community. I think you got my general view on how that goes by the post at Matrix and your wishlist here is a good easy start. Participation participation, participation. That means learning the game, supporting your fellow users, writing documentation, any number of tasks can use huge amounts of labor. Now if you want to take the quick approach and fund the development that'd be fantastic but so far nobody has wanted to throw money away like that .

Total victory conditions
From the code... Total Victory conditions are not checked until Minimum Victory for the side in question is achieved (this one I'm sure about). There appears to be no relationship between the order of entry of victory conditions and the checking thereof (though such things are tough to read so in this there is a chance I'm wrong). It appears we could detach the requirement for minimum victory to preceed total victory without introducing many nightmares (other than designer intent in existing scenarios).

Strategic Level Games
I'll put my oar in the water for Supreme Ruler 2010 (but not 2020, nooo). http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/supr...r-2010/mobyrank Probably not what you are looking for but a potentially interesting study nonetheless.

F-15C as an EW bird?
Come on, somebody post a nice wisecrack about the F-15 protecting the F-22, please!

Database Design and the HCE Launcher
Miscellaneous piece of info... Any recent scenarios (i.e. EC2003 and newer) have stored within the scenario the name of the database used to save the scenario. So MyFunnyScen.SCm will have information in it that says HCDB-040506 for .res file and HCOfficialCommonDB for .rsr file. A utility (launcher for instance) will hopefully someday key off of that information to automagically match scenario to DB.

HC Launcher Brainstorming
From a code perspective the GE's default is to have formation patrol disabled (i.e. first time you install the game). The launcher defaults mirror the GE defaults. From a player perspective I can say that only on the largest scenarios do I enable the auto formation patrols since I like to set up my own formation patrols.

File - HC Launcher
Updated... 2010.006 - 2010/04/28 Saves/Loads settings via Launcher.ini file. Smarter about looking for HC. File filters added to some edit controls.

Thanks for the report Pete, sounds like a nice, disciplined run through.

Naval Thunder - Battleship Row
Sounds like fun Pete, but the US still seems to have a chance. Any possibility you'll game both a retreat and a fight to the death for us? Thanks!

Release of next update
I run and program the game on Windows 7 so it definitely works . The scenarios editor will not run natively on the 64-bit edition of any operating system without emulation or virtualization (I happen to use VMWare). That is the limitation at present. We can always use help, the more help, the faster we can make progress, see the beta area .

Release of next update
Wish I knew; wish I could tell you. What's got you asking? If you aren't running 2009.042 you can grab it from http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=2049 . Matrix and friends never got around to releasing it.

2010.005 Release Notes
Should be all gun engagements. Aircraft guns being limited to 30 degrees to each side of the nose.

2010.005 Release Notes
Got another of the Get Annex crashes. A fair way into a complex scenario so will try to get some thing small out of it as a save. Looked like during engagement by AI aircraft with player aircraft. (one player aircraft just shot down and one remaining). Saved game uses database HCWW100326, (westpac batleset). ramp up to 10 or 30 sec time compression and you soon get enemy contact (Hurricane). Select intercept option to intercept 'aircraft'. program crashes with a get annex error message. Thanks, I ran into one while autotesting too, will have a look tomorrow or so.

AI not so dumb
The funny thing is that I purposefully disabled all of that code for land units, the programmer after me re-enabled it. Having that functionality enabled really detracts from land engagements in my experience.

A new 'old timer' question on Tutorial
Welcome back Rick! I'd highly suggest you play WestPac 1.0 as your introductory scenario. I wrote it to highlight some of the newer capabilities of the game and make the engagements much more certain to happen. Find the orders as a PDF at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=263 Once you are patched to 2008.044 I'd also suggest 2009.042 from http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=2049 (you probably don't want to do the latest beta though so no 2010.### for now).
