Should be a general issue that happens to be demonstrated by aircraft.

Has no one checked this yet? If not, I should be able to get to it over the next couple of days. Nobody has checked; your effort is appreciated
  4. Please try right-clicking on "Download Now" (at the HCDB file download page) and doing a Save As. Make sure to save it in a different place than your existing attempts. See if that helps (i.e. skip any cached downloads, speaking of which it wouldn't hurt to clear your browser temp files before attempting this).
  5. So am I understanding correctly that the commondb.* files are unzipping fine (i.e. Winzip or whatever program you are using is not giving errors)? If so you are probably trying to use scenarios not meant for the database you have downloaded. They should match (HCDA scenarios go with the HCDA database, HCDB scenarios go with the HCDB database,...)
  6. January 10th I restarted the attempt to make a 32-bit scenario editor based on the current codebase. That day saw the development environment configured well enough to start compiling. Ended up at 39 errors, 667 warnings during compilation. For reference, the program doesn't get to run and go down in flames until there are 0 compilation errors. January 20th update: 23 errors, 652 warnings, progress...

HCE - 2010.001 - 2010/01/20 =========================== - Chg:0143 GE Early beginnings... Track sensor status by range ring. No player noticeable changes yet. - Chg:0000 GE Disable Windows\Cascade menu item.
  8. HCE - 2010.001 - 2010/01/20 =========================== - Chg:0143 GE Early beginnings... Track sensor status by range ring. No player noticeable changes yet. - Chg:0000 GE Disable Windows\Cascade menu item. Only need to test the latter. Nothing to test for the former yet.
  9. Depends upon the particular umpire. If I were the umpire leniency is the rule, inform the player and move the sub into some less than ideal yet legal depth. I probably wouldn't hold up the game to let that player provide a new depth; they can optimize the next turn.
  10. 1. My standard answer for this is that H3 ANW specializes in small battles and HC specializes in larger battles. Naturally there are exceptions to that but I think it generally holds true. Small battles usually being at least a handful of ships. 2. If you like it yes, if it isn't your cup of tea I suppose the answer is no. I happen to like it. Definitely take the demos for a spin. (http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=3446 for the HC one) 3. Well, SH is pretty, Harpoon is not. SH is a single-platform game for the most part, Harpoon is quite a bit higher-level. Really entirely different beasts, like first person shooter (Silent Hunter) vs top-down scroller (Harpoon). 4. Love Silent Hunter, love Harpoon in all incarnations. Endless entertainment with Harpoon; by no means perfect games, not even close, but I'm in it for entertainment and that I get aplenty.
  11. not so that they'd be useful (i.e. making the window resizeable isn't prohibitively difficult, making everything within the window resize is a different story...
  12. While I personally never use cascade (its cumbersome and annoying to me) there might be people that do. I'd say leave the ability, but make it an 'opt in' thing where you have to purposely set it to cascade the windows. That is remove the menu option so it can't be accidentally activated, but still have the ability available to those that want it. Hehe, sorry, that isn't a quick partial annoyance reducer
  13. The game mechanics you see in the demo are exactly what you get in the real game (except for the march of builds as new patches are released). However the demo does better take advantage of the current state of the game via the rebuilt USNI scenarios than do most of the 'legacy' scenarios. So I can't honestly say every scenario in the full game is going to stack up to the demo. Plus you'll have quite a few user created scenarios here at HG that do take advantage of the recent advancements.
  14. As a quick partial annoyance reducer how about disabling or removing the Cascade menu option?
  15. Brad and I just have the same opinion on just about everything, including U-571
  16. Das Boot for sure imho. Enhanced by the primary spoken language being German
  17. I seem to recall once hearing that it was sixty degrees to either side of the nose. Right you are
  18. My 2 cents (and when building a computer there are sure a variety of 2 cents!)... Not the biggest fan of ASRock motherboards, quite big fan of say Asus. Big fan of the Intel i7 series of processors and no, GHz isn't a great measure of performance, performance charts at places like Tom's Hardware and elsewhere are imho about the only way to go these days (i7 at 2.6GHz will tend to beat a Core 2 Quad core at 2.6GHz without breaking a sweat for instance). Memory looks good, a bit overkill and you could get faster timing by going with something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231230 You should only need the memory you spec'ed if you are going to overclock, otherwise the link here will give you faster performance due to the lower latencies. If you plan to overclock, definitely go with what you picked out. Bang for buck I think you'd get better video performance right now with ATI but if you stick with NVidia (the safe and comfortable bet!) look thru the cards again. You can get GTS 250 cards with faster core clocks for less money than the 9800 GT cards (similar chip, GTS250 = 9800GTX+ which is faster than 9800GT, smaller die in the 250 series = less heat = better for overclocking, ...) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814261051 as one example but there are many there (including 1GB cards at higher clock and lower price than your 9800GT).

1 - Your best bet at present are to play user-created scenarios such as those you can download here at HarpGamer. They make better use of the game's capabilities than most of the stock scenarios. 2 - Yes, multiplayer is planned but I don't think you'll see it anytime soon. Maintaining/expanding the game is a volunteer operation and there isn't a ton of interest these days so progress is slow as a whole (and impacts long-term projects like multiplayer more severely). 3 - If you liked Harpoon 2, then definitely grab H3. It really comes down to personal preference. There shouldn't be a reason to wait, 3.10 is scheduled to be a free upgrade.
  20. I don't have first-hand experience but PowerPC Macs are what the game was made for. Intel macs weren't even around when H3 Mac 3.6.x were released.
  21. One I can do off the top of my head is HF (3D), that would be Height Finding, not High Frequency. Dipping sonar I think is self explanatory (dippers on helos and Osprey). Localiser/Ranging in the sonar routine is initially treated like a hull mounted sonar but without the baffles restriction. However it looks like the code is incomplete later in the routine. In sum I expect this type of sonar doesn't work, would be good to see some test results and files.

Nice content there with platform statistics, keep up the effort!
  23. A very nice story, thanks Buddha
  24. There is always a way if the will is strong enough. See http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=3661 for some possibilities if you get a strong SE itch.
  25. You sure can. You won't be able to use the scenario editor with the 64-bit OS but everything else works.
