  1. party pooper, especially considering the title of the topic
  2. Excellent, are you by chance the fellow who posted a similar approach a couple of years ago?
  3. Reading Cat's Cradle which before I started, had no idea that the creation of the atom bomb was a key plot anchor of the book. I'm enjoying the critical look at stereotypes, forms of government, and variety of characters explored in the story.
  4. Don, Does your path to HCE contain space in it? i.e. C:\Matrix Games\HCE or no spaces C:\Games\HCE ? Just curious, quite awesome it if works with the former.
  5. Just finished Days of Infamy which takes a fictional look at a different possibility for Pearl Harbor (i.e. Japan goes after US carriers at sea after the real strike). I really enjoyed the book and really didn't expect to!
  6. I know you guys like pretty pictures, SE on Ubuntu just now (though I'm finding more unfortunate quirks). Tony
  7. Nope, you have to use a virtual machine or dual boot or... You cannot run the SE directly in a 64-bit version of Windows. So if you have Windows 7 Professional or 'higher' you can get the free XP Mode virtual machine from Microsoft and run the SE in that. Or if you have an old Windows license (win2000, win98, etc.) you can install that in a virtual machine (I usually use VMWare Player as the VM enabler). Thanks to your interest I've also been putting some time into reviving running the SE in Linux thanks to WINE and have EC2003 and earlier battlesets working there. Come see us on IRC, we can chat about it and find the best way for you.
  8. It shouldn't happen, it does happen. Myself and others have added code to reduce severity and occurence but have never achieved total success. One scenario design tenet has been to only make single submarine groups.

Yes, ECM pods have worked for quite a long while (added during the WestPac beta in the 2003-2005 timeframe). The capability was added to mounts (ships, installations, probably subs too) in 2007 after the HCE release. Interesting that SAMs aren't firing beyond the horizon, can't say I remember that being limited by code but the detection sure is. There isn't a way to know which aircraft are VLow capable unless you use the Platform Editor (PE).

I think all you gents with too much money should send some my way so we can buy some of my time for coding this silly game
  11. and the discussion, not sure whether I'm hoping for a flame war or for peace, both have their merits! HCE http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2498149 ANW http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2498107

If you have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate you get an XP virtual machine from Microsoft for free to run those older apps.

I noticed there hasn't been a ton of action on the release notes verification and while I'm grateful for the issue tracker being somewhat alive, most of the excitement has surrounded a bashing of multiplayer. Well, it got me interested enough again to pound out some code. I'll try to remember to post an update here every couple of weeks until we get back to testable builds. 2011/02/20 - First time firing up the game and selecting multiple sides for the player to control. Extended the Staff Assistant to indicate which side a message is for by modifying the window title (it already differentiated with the graphic chosen but this may be more easily interpreted and helps out the Green side). Also changed group window titles to indicate player assigned to the side being viewed. A long ways to go but progress nonetheless, thanks to Brains for pushing me to take the leap. 2010/10/19 - The GE compiles again and runs! It isn't playable but check out the screenshot. 2010/07/31 - Another hour and a half of code edits working on the expansion to four group windows. Made it thru search.c, one of the biggies for this migration. 2010/07/29 - Couple more hours of code edits working on the expansion to four group windows. I'm getting antsy to see a compilable pile of code... 2010/07/27 - Fiveish more hours of code edits working on the expansion to four group windows abd complete tracking of detection status for each side. 2010/07/16 - Couple more hours of code edits working on the expansion to four group windows. 2010/06/22 - Detour to try to get the SE working nicely in Ubuntu with WINE. Made one critical code-change that allows the SE to work in pre-commondb battlesets without obvious issues. Roughly 5 hours invested. 2010/06/17 - Put in a couple of hours worth of code edits tonight, still working on the expansion to four group windows. Perhaps a bad move but am focusing on getting everything compiling and will return to bringing forward saved game conversion once the game runs again. 2010/06/10 - At least a week ago resumed looking into multiplayer. First steps in progress are gathering detection status per side and expanding from one to four group windows. The idea behind the group windows is to be able to view the game from different perspectives (Red, Blue, Green) instead of only from the player perspective. The task is complicated quite a bit by writing the saved game file conversion routines, both globals and group structures need conversion. Probably weeks or months away from useable build.
  14. Yep, KPH, in my case minutes:seconds per mile. Next up is a 5k right near my house July 7th to see how fast I can go.
  15. Thanks Ralf, and awesome that you've undertaken such an adventure. I am undecided about a full marathon; my running companion has no interest in a full but I have a certain curiosity about trying a full marathon.
  16. A couple of more photos my dad took... And while I don't much care about my time, it appears the course was 13.25 miles instead of 13.1 meaning we really ran a 9:18/9:19 pace.
  17. This morning I ran my first half marathon, see me (7216) starting to wave at my family in the attached photo. I might post more when the official race photos come out. Still can't say that I'd want to run a full marathon; running for fun is great, but competitive runners you have my respect but not my envy! Time: 2:03:25, 9:26 pace Don Thomas, see the other waving person? Doing my best to satisfy that list of things I'd like (smart - check, rich - compared to me without a doubt, good looking - yes though running pics aren't the best examples).
  18. Thanks for sharing Ralf, sounds like a scen I could handle!
  19. I don't expect you'd normally see helos on the Iowas in large part since there are no hangar facilities. The helo capability being more of a logistics feature allowing personnel and material transfers from ship to ship and ship to shore. Certainly you wouldn't be running ASW ops off of an Iowa fantail. You could however have some gunfire spotting from an assigned helo though in any 1990s or newer situation that role would be filled by UAVs. http://www.worldlingo.com/ma/enwiki/en/Iow...hip#Helicopters
  20. Just to be clear, the scenario editor runs fine on the 32-bit version of Windows 7. Yes, there is an effort to conver the SE to a 32-bit application which would allow it to run on 64-bit operating systems. No, you needn't expect it anytime. I urge you to check out http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx for virtualization on the fairly cheap. At worst you'd have to shell out some money for a fancier version of Windows 7 that then includes the virtual windows XP package license.

Netbook could be tough. Start with the game closed and run http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...mp;showfile=228 to reset window positions (pretty much for a 640x480 screen). Run the game again. If you still can't see the dialogs you'll have to exit the game and start editing the registry. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Matrix Games\HCE\Options within the subkeys of the above you'll see some with top/bottom/right/left, adjust those numbers so that they will be visible on your screen. Note, most of the window subkeys are lower-case (group, staff, report,...) vs game settings that have some uppercase letters (SavedGamePath, SatffFormation,...).
  23. The CIC Warfare Plotter does not enforce borders nor even land vs water. From that perspective you can use whatever installation you desire. Secondarily, while it is possible to draw arbitrary country borders, nobody has gone to the (rather difficult) effort to recreate any alternate country borders.

  25. Nice writeup Ralf, thanks for sharing and I'm looking forward to the rest of the battle.
