Harpoon v Silent Hunter

Featured Replies

Hey Guys

I've been playing the Harpoon 4.1 rules for a little over 12 months. I've just started looking at PC based harpoon type games. I know this is a Harpoon site, but i had a few questions.

1. Is harpoon the PC game more about large scale battles or running individual ships/subs?

2. Is Harpoon PC any good?

3. How does Silent Hunter PC game compare?

4. Can anyone comment on either game, preferences, strenghts or weaknesses?

The simplest answer is that the closest thing the 2 games have to each other is that they take place in water.

Further posters will be able to discuss further.

1) Most scenarios seem to be geared to larger engagements with groups of ships. There are scenarios that involve individual ships but they are rare.

2) Yes, but I'm biased.

3) Never played Silent Hunter.

4) Being from the dawn of the PC age, Harpoon is not very "sexy" as appearances go. The Artificial Intelligence probably isn't as bright as it should be. There are certan unrealistic aspects that must be lived with (like unlimited aircraft rearmament stores). However, Harpoon works realistically enough to satisfy and the learning curve is not all that steep. The biggest plus is that there is a very large and active users community out there that is always working on improving the experience and creating new scenarios.

It is generally about larger scale 'fleet' battles but there is no reason you can't have a scenario with an individual ship or submarine.

2. Is Harpoon PC any good?

Are you kidding me?

3. How does Silent Hunter PC game compare?

I have owned every version of the Harpoon series. I have ANW and, of course, HCE. I own both SH3 and SH4.

Harpoon and SH are completely different simulations. They aim at achieving entirely separate objectives. IMHO, they both do very well in that respect.

You will find plenty of SH related discussion, screenshots and 'AARs' in the OT forum.

1. My standard answer for this is that H3 ANW specializes in small battles and HC specializes in larger battles. Naturally there are exceptions to that but I think it generally holds true. Small battles usually being at least a handful of ships.

2. If you like it yes, if it isn't your cup of tea I suppose the answer is no. I happen to like it. Definitely take the demos for a spin. (http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=3446 for the HC one)

3. Well, SH is pretty, Harpoon is not. SH is a single-platform game for the most part, Harpoon is quite a bit higher-level. Really entirely different beasts, like first person shooter (Silent Hunter) vs top-down scroller (Harpoon).

4. Love Silent Hunter, love Harpoon in all incarnations. Endless entertainment with Harpoon; by no means perfect games, not even close, but I'm in it for entertainment and that I get aplenty.

My take:

1. Harpoon can be about large or small scale battles, it really just depends on the scenario. You don't run an individual ship, but you do have the ability to micromanage your fleets if you want to. Harpoon is more suited to task force level play, though you do have control over the individual units if you so desire.

2. That depends on you. I think its great, but am somewhat biased. ;)

3. I don't really think you can compare them. They really aren't the same genre. Silent Hunter is about submarine warfare, Harpoon is about tactical naval warfare including air ops.

4. I can definitely comment on Harpoon:

Strengths:

  • Harpoon allows tactical naval warfare on a regional scale with the player being in control in a manner similar to a theatre commander.
  • It is an older, but well established game that has a rich 20+ year history on PC.
  • The level of detail allows you to micro-manage if you desire, and the AI assist is good enough that you can simply manage on a theatre command level instead of a unit command level.
  • Real time combat.

Weaknesses:

  • As of right now, no multiplayer.
  • Graphics are not up to date (though some, like myself, don't consider this a weakness).

That's my opinion on the matter anyway. As far as which I would play...both to be honest, but if I had to choose only 1, I'd choose Harpoon.

  • 3 weeks later...

I agree with this guy. Im very new to Harpoon, but i've played both and they are VASTLY different games.

Silent hunter has its merit in simulating individual ship operations, where as Harpoon is about entire fleet operations.

Both are superb in their own arena, but they are indeed in different arenas.

Downside of HCE i believe, is the lack of multiplayer. Some comment on the AI being quite poor, but being as the game is based on scenarios rather than open ended play, it works IMHO very well.

There are some minor 'bugs', however these are few and far between.

Silent hunter i don't really have any bad to say about it, other than its scope of interest is very small.

Btw, hello guys! <-- new to HCE :D
