I would like this thread to be very clean: please don't introduce any side issues. Over the past couple of weeks, there has been a lot of discussion here about detection, and visual detection appears to relatively the least well understood component. What do we know about visual detection? 1) Joe has provided a lot of reports, some anecdotal, some well-referenced, of how his units can't see the broad side of a barn. He has also provided a lot of anecdotal reports that the AI easily detects his units for unknown reasons. We cannot at this point say that those were definitely visual detections. He has provided some well-referenced reports that the AI easily dete…

I was looking to understand jamming and ECM in general, how does it work in the game, the forums have some good posts on this but then ... why not ask the GE itself? In Harpoon I can do what ELINT officers can only dream of, invite the Russians to Red Flag! Lets come over the Atlantic for a friendly what have you got! Red can have Keflavik, Blue is flying from Kinloss. Bring everything you have. The SE sets up the bases nicely, we are all friends but better ready as many Ferry loadouts as possible. Additionally Air Marshall General Bernard Show All will also keep a sharp lookout for anyone giving in to old instincts. ELINT corps are strapping on ESM gear everywhere, t…

In trying to get a handle on this relative detectability issue, I have a few hypothetical cases, and since I can't create test scenarios for them (yet), I'm hoping someone can shed light on what should happen in these situations: Case 1: A player's base and an AI base exist, say, 400 nm apart - or whatever distance places them beyond each other's air radar range. A MiG-21 is loitering directly above one base and an E-2C is loitering directly above the other base. Both planes are at high altitude, and neither have any radar active. Both bases have active radar. There are no other groups "in play". The questions are, who sees what? 1. Is the E-2C detected by the …

At the request of Ivan Rapkinov, here is a list of known 'Bugs' for Harpoon Classic Gold. Not all the behaviours described below are 'bugs'. Some are simply an explanation of how the game or scenario editor works. If anyone believes that a particular bug has been fixed or is in error, please feel free to notify GameSquad so that this list can be amended. Please note: This list is not meant as a criticism of an excellent and enjoyable game. The sole purpose of this list is to inform players of currently known issues and possibly help them to avoid problems. EDIT: ONLY BUG/ISSUE POSTS WILL BE ADDED TO THIS THREAD - ANYTHING ELSE WILL BE DELETED!!! - IR …

I am having problems - my issue is quite similar to what is described at: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2501954&mpage=1&key= This implies I must dig back and install over multiple time. - Any alternatives to digging for old installs. Actually all I did was install the "HCE-UpdateComprehensiveInstaller-2009.050.exe" 9299 MB size) I also have perhaps the same error of "Edit: seems like I did not install the first update correctly, that would be the issue I guess " - I went to C:\program files\ instead of with the X86 add since now at a 64 bit OS (prior was 32) thanks in advance.

Every month or so, I run into a situation where an AI air group is impervious to any manner of attack, and proceeds to walk right through my formation(s), wrecking havoc on everything in sight! This happens quite rarely, yet I've encountered it a number of times. Typically, the "super group" will appear to be a normal AI group, say a pair of Flankers. Other pairs of Flankers will have attacked (or approached) my formation(s), and have engaged in dogfights or intercepts in a typical manner, being downed or fended off with the occasional loss inflicted on my defenders. But the one "invincible" group will run in, and will absorb everything that I can throw at it - inc…

It's been quite some time since I touched the Scenario Editor, and a question came up but I can't recall the answer: Is it possible to have an air strike in-progress or at least imminent at the start of a scenario... or do all air attacks have to be launched from a base? In other words, is it possible to set it up so that the player will be under attack as soon as he starts playing the scenario, or will there always be the time required for the AI to launch a strike from a base and travel to the attack position?

TACTICS 101: NAVAL FORMATIONS - PART 2: ASSEMBLING A FORMATION IN HCE Part 2 of this discussion on Naval Formations will focus on building or assembling a naval formation in HCE using the game's formation editor. We will use the Scenario Editor (SE) here, but the principles are equally applicable to use of the formation editor within the Game Engine (GE). To illustrate naval formations in general, let's build one of the more popular formations - a US Navy carrier strike group (CSG). As was discussed in Part 1, the components of a naval formation comprise the main body and the screen. Within HCE's formation editor, the screen is further broken down into the …

Cross posted from Matrix Games in response to a question asking about the difference between HC and H3 Matrix is a new start of sorts for Harpoon and vague answers to your question Rob may be frustrating but one of the few things the various factions of Harpoon have generally agreed upon is no trashing either of the games in a comparison in public forums. HC (Harpoon Classic/HCE) folks are plenty capable of trashing H3 (Harpoon 3/ANW) and vice versa. It has been done, it has ruined gaming relationships, and has made everyone look bad. Oh, and did I mention AGSI doesn't much appreciate it either! AGSI positions H3 as more hard core and HC as a lighter game, …

I used various versions some years ago, finishing on Classic and W98. One of the problems was non re-sizable windows; ridiculously small on a large screen (1600x1200, or better). (Current hardware is twin core Athlon running XP.) So far as I can tell the main difference between the two versions is single user v multi-user. I expect mainly single user, but for the small price difference multi-user would be nice if there were no penalties or 'gotchas'. Is there any compelling reason to choose one or the other? Can old battlesets and scenarios be updated for use with either version?; or does one merely download new versions? Am I right in thinking that there…

Hi All, I'm not sure if this message is in the right forum, so if not please feel free to move it or advise where I should repost. I just purchased Harpoon Ultimate Edition, largely on the strength of http://www.simhq.com/_naval/naval_003a.html. Granted, that discusses an earlier version of the game, but the interface does not seem to have changed appreciably. I've perhaps jumped in at the deep end as far as the game is concerned, but I figured that it might at least be worth a shot. I've been blind since birth, but also a fan of, among others, Red Storm Rising. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how I ought to proceed. Much of the information provided by …

Running tests on GIUK 2 Gauntlet. An old familiar scenario. NATO has an OHP frigate + a Type 22/2 FF + 2 merchants. Included are 2 x Lynx + 2 x Seahawk. Russians get 1 x Victor 2, 2 x Nanuchka, 6 x MiG-23. So my ships are driving along, minding their own business, at 15 kn. Suddenly we detect a bunch of torpedos incoming. The 22/2 is the target. It detaches and runs away at 30 kn. The OHP slows down to 5 kn. We launch 2 helos and start searching. Good sonar circle on the OHP (15 nm radius at this speed), lotta sonobuoys in play. When the torps are 4 nm away from the OHP, and fully detected, and still headed for the 22/2, suddenly the OHP just sinks!!! …

This is the first in what will hopefully be a series of discussions on tactics in HCCE, inspired in part by Pete's suggestions. The first topic will be power projection or strike planning: These are my personal comments on Strike Planning. I like to borrow from the USAF's Targeting Guide, which is far more complex than necessary than required by HCCE, but it contains helpful principles and guidance. For example, for the purposes of this exercise, I assume that we have already determined what target we want to hit and what objectives we hope to achieve by hitting that particular target. Let's assume, as well, for the sake of our assessment, that our target is …

Good afternoon everyone. I have recently purchased the Matrix Games Harpoon Ultimate Commander's Edition as well as Harpoon 3 -3.9.4 after not playing Harpoon for ages. One of the things I have noticed is that UCE is more "user friendly" and easier for a relative Newbie like myself to get up and playing.. While Harpoon 3 appears to be more difficult. That being said, I guess I am frustrated with H3 even though I am perceiving it to be the more "accurate" simulation for playing against the computer AI, as opposed to UCE as being more of an "advanced video game" version of Harpoon. Is my own perception? or am I missing something. What I want to be ab…

Given some folks' reports of their airborne early warning & control (AEW&C) or AWACS aircraft proving vulnerable to 'sneak attacks' or generally not being able to spot enemy targets, I'd thought I would run a few tests through HCE 2009.050 and HCDB-110304 and post the results. The premise being that AEW&C and AWACS are not the "all seeing eye of Sauron" that some might expect them to be, nor are all of their potential targets, foes and aggressors created equally. I chose four different AEW&C platforms (with some similar and some varying capabilities), and a variety of radar 'targets' (again, with some similarities and some differences between them)…

Hi. I tried to post in defect tracking, but apparently I'm not allowed to post there. I've been playing HCEDemo, and it's awesome, but I can't save... or at least open saves. Here's the name of the app: HCE - Demo - A Classic Lives - Build 2009.050 - Demo Expires 2012/01/01 Open application Select USNI - US Naval Institute Click OK Select 1.0 USNI #1: No Man's Land Click New Game Play Which Side: Select Blue File -> Save As Next You see: Harpoon: Commander's Edition GE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. S…

How does the GE/A.I handle ASM/SSM attacks as it pertains to SAM's? Using this example: Platform A: Center of formation; SAM's with a 50nm range Platform B: 25nm from Platform A; SAM's with 35nm range Platform C: 40nm from Platform A, 15nm from Platform B; SAM's with 25nm range (assume ships are positioned in a straight line from Platform A to C) A missile is inbound and is headed for C (assume it's origin is Point D which is 100nm from C on the same bearing) Which ship will launch to intercept?
