May 6, 201115 yr Hi. I tried to post in defect tracking, but apparently I'm not allowed to post there. I've been playing HCEDemo, and it's awesome, but I can't save... or at least open saves. Here's the name of the app: HCE - Demo - A Classic Lives - Build 2009.050 - Demo Expires 2012/01/01 Open application Select USNI - US Naval Institute Click OK Select 1.0 USNI #1: No Man's Land Click New Game Play Which Side: Select Blue File -> Save As Next You see: Harpoon: Commander's Edition GE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. System is an ASUS 1005 HA running XP / 32 bit. Anyone seen this?
May 6, 201115 yr Can't say I've heard of that problem. With the game closed please try deleting (or renaming to an extension other than .dll) the file DemoAds.dll in the ExportDLLs directory of the game. On a default setup that would be C:\Matrix Games\HCDemo\ExportDLLs\DemoAds.dll Give it another whirl after that and let us know what you find please.
May 6, 201115 yr Thank you for trying that. This may be painful since I can't replicate the issue yet. My attempt at replicating the issue was also with 32-bit XP. What screen resolution are you running? I haven't run the game at a resolution lower than 640x480 but others have successfully used netbooks (though I don't know what resolutions they used either). Looks like yours is natively 1024 x 600. I don't have an Atom-based machine to test with either. Another random question is what security software you are using in the off-chance that it is interfering? You can try a slightly newer Winharp32.exe (Game Engine aka GE) if you want to take a stab in the dark attempt. http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?s...showtopic=12990

Resolution doesn't seem to change it, though, 1280 x 1024 on an external monitor gives the same results. It doesn't matter if I use an external monitor or the machine's own display. I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I'll try the newer game engine. Can't hurt, might help.
May 6, 201115 yr I'll work up a special GE for you this weekend to narrow down what part of the save process isn't working. Anyone else running a machine with an atom CPU or similar setup to Akron? I do run security essentials on some of my test machines and haven't seen it interfere. That's it for me this afternoon, heading out to run in the sun
May 6, 201115 yr Author Enjoy your weekend. I'd appreciate the help... I have fun with the game, but it's hard to get my job done and finish a 6 hour bout with the computer without making the girlfriend jealous. 5.0 USNI #3 takes a while to finish, even on highest speed. Those troop ships don't hustle....
May 8, 201115 yr Okay, first try at extended logging, http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...ost&id=1267 After the crash zip up ge.log and attach it to a reply post here. My related entries look like: 100001 Loadsave.c:31 - HandleSavedGameScroll 01 scroll_type=1, is_setup=0 100001 Loadsave.c:33 - HandleSavedGameScroll 02 after InidDisplau 100001 Loadsave.c:35 - HandleSavedGameScroll 03 after InitOpAndTacWindows 100001 Loadsave.c:41 - HandleSavedGameScroll 04 _getcwd=C:\Games\HCDemo 100001 Loadsave.c:110 - HandleSavedGameScroll 05 before GetSaveFileName 100001 Loadsave.c:136 - HandleSavedGameScroll 06 after GetSaveFileName 100001 Loadsave.c:317 - HandleSavedGameScroll 07 SaveGameName=C:\Games\HCDemo\AutoSave.USNI-hp1 100001 Savegame.c:730 - about to save globals, size=305, file offset=76 100001 Savegame.c:736 - after globals save, file offset=381

May 9, 201115 yr It looks like your log isn't for the procedure indicated in your first post. Your log appears to be for opening a saved game, not doing a File\Save As. Please clarify or post a log of the actions in your first post.

Please clarify or post a log of the actions in your first post. Oh, my bad. I must have been sleepy. It's the same error any time I try to get to 'File Selection' applet in Windows from HCE. Lemme do that again, this time demonstrating File\Save As. BEGIN Logging begins. Build Date = May 8 2011, Build Time=13:31:52 0 harpoon.c:732 - done processing arguments. Possible causes of such a crash would be Windows Explorer replacement, theming, left-over damage from Malware infections,... Anyway, please post up the log you get from the linked GE.

May 10, 201115 yr Curious! That one didn't hit step 5. At least it is a clue. Can you try again using a command line option with 2009.056? You renamed the GE I think so... WinharpWhateverName.exe -f "C:\Matrix Games\HCEDemo\ge2.log" give the save as a try and post up the ge2.log please. We'll look at how the ofn structure is initialized next if this verifies that you don't get to the ofn.* entries.
