Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon 4 paper rules.

  1. Started by pmaidhof,

I'd like suggestions for a tactical target for a relatively small strike package of A-6E, EA-6B, F-14 or F/A-18E, F/A-18F, F/A-18G. My target area is in the vicinity of the bridges in or around Madrid/Madrid Springs, NY. It could be one of the bridges, although I'm not too stoked about that. Was thinking a command post or logistics base. If it's something odd like that, please suggest DP capacity for such. The planes will be launched from Southampton Air National Guard Base on Long Island. They will fly generally north across LI Sound, CT, western MA, and then VT before making an approximate 90 degree turn for an approximate 80+nm run into upstate NY and onto…

I am a China watcher and increasingly frustrated by the lack of PLAN platforms available in Harpoon 4.1 Now that Sea of Dragons is 11 years old, and given the dizzying pace of Chinese military modernization here's what I'd like to see added in the next edition (unless anyone here happens to already have the data): Submarines: Type 094 Jin Class Type 093 Shang Class Type 039A Yuan Class Type 039/G/G1 Song Class Surface Combatants: Type 051C Luzhou Class Type 052C Luyang-II Type 051B Luhai Class Type 053H1G Jianghu-V Class Type 053H2 Jianghu-III Class Amphibs: Type 071 Landing Platform Dock Type 072-II (Yuting Class) Large Landing S…

4x Experienced MiG-29K at High Alt. and 6x Competent J-10 at high altitude (flying top cover for the JH-7A's), both at cruise throttle, detect each other at 71.5nm. Both groups of fighters accelerate to FMP and close. Both the Indians and Chinese fires long range missile fire at a range of 34.3nm. 6x R-77 and 4x PL-12. Due to the same distance and speed, the missiles all reach their targets at approximately the same time. R-77 ATA 7.0 -4.5 (J-10 Man Rating) -0.5 (J-10 3rd Gen Decoys) -0.5 (J-10 VSmall Target) = 1.5 Missile Index -1 row due to Experienced vs Competent. pK = 50% 4 Kills rolled. In response to the Brahmos attack on one of their Type-956EM, PLAN has begun "planning" a retaliatory strike on an Indian Navy vessel, from a secret air base in the country formerly known as Burma. 4x JH-7A's, each with 4x YJ-82K (C802K), 2x PL-5, and a 720 liter drop tank, will launch and travel 300nm to strike the Indian SAG. At 200nm, the raid will drop to at least Low Altitude. Definitiely more to follow.

To take this scenario a little further along ... From the recent RIA Novosti news posted here: "The South American country [Venezuela] has been vigorously pursuing modernization of its naval fleet to counter a possible U.S. blockade of its oil fields and prepare for direct military confrontation with Washington .... He said the negotiations were focused on the procurement of the new Amur-class diesel submarines and Project 636 low-noise submarines with Club-S integrated missile systems. Meanwhile, Russia's popular Kommersant daily reported Thursday that Venezuela had approached Russia with a request to build nine diesel submarines, five of the Project 636 and four…

In layman's terms what would be the sequence of action for a MH-60B dropping sonar buoys in search of an anticipated, not necessarily suspected diesel electric sub. I'm solo'ing part of that HNR03 LCS scenario again. Right now, the convoy is reaching a choke point and Red diesel electic boat is missing from the port it was last seen. An MH-60B has been punched out. Scale at the moment is 1"=1nm. I have set up a 10x10 square inch box (using 1" square graph paper, with 10 sub-divisions per "box"). I roll a D10 to come up with which box the DE boat is in, then roll 2D10 to come up with a four digit grid coordinate for its exact location. I then do the same for the …

I sort of fell into this beginning saturday and finished up tonight. Don't put too much credance into this yet as it did not start out too "detailed" in planning. The twist was that I was interested in a possible airstrike on an Iranian weapons lab/complex. I used a modified Appendix 5 Gaming the Kola Air Defenses from High Tide. By modified, I ignored the Off-shore AEW/Interceptor phase as I assumed that a pre-mission fighter sweep would have taken its toll. The second and third modifications were SWAG's to the GCI Fighter Table and "Iranian" Fighter Type Table. I did not believe that the Iranians could get anything above a squadron in the air and within range o…

I transitioned the situation and platforms from the H3 (paper rules) scenario found in Harpoon Naval Review 1994 by Dave Schueler. The entire scenario encompasses a joint airstrike in the Southern No Fly Zone of post-Desert Storm Iraq. I did however, use H4 data regarding the aircraft performance as well as their respective ordnance. Due to time constraints, I only "flew" the Navy/Marine attack on two command centers in Amara, Iraq. It was the smaller of two packages, compared to the strike on two sites outside of Basra. This package included 2x A-6E, 2x F/A-18C, and 1x EA-6B. Each A-6E carried 8x Mk-82 500lb bombs along with a drop tank, while the F/A-18's each …

Pirates of the Caribbean Military juntas have taken control in Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela. These juntas, closely allied with each other, are ruling their countries with an iron fist. In addition, they have given safe haven to pirates and dealers in the drug trade for a portion of the proceeds. Representatives of organized terrorist groups have also been spotted in the area. Scenario 1—Lighting the match Lookouts on the new US Coast Guard Maritime Security Cutter have sighted a trawler full of refugees from Cuba. The Cutter initiates a radio call to the vessel. Meanwhile the trawler is being pursued by a Cuban Osa class missile boat. The Osa has the trawl…

What would be a good example of surface search radar, and air search radar while I’m asking, for a small to medium OpFor port facility . Port installations in HC seem to have them and their use in H4 would seem to be plausible. If not in the H4/High Tide, please hint to a link where I'd be able to find some stats. Thanks

The SSN USS Virginia's mission is to infiltrate a Norwegian fjord to disembark SEALS. As the sub was enroute sonar detected three ships eventually identified as a Udaloy, Krivak 4, and Sovremennyy all between 7 and 10 nm away. The best russian passive sonar range was about 2nm while the sub had a towed array sonar with a range of 10nm. The sub launched its torps at 5 nm from the Udaloy and about 7 miles from the Sovremennyy with the Krivak in between. The Mk48 Mod 6 travelling at 65 knots easily chased down and destroyed the Krivak and Udaloy. With the tubes and wires cleared and reloaded I fired on the Sovremennyy but it was too late. After seeing its two compani…

I thought I'd post this AAR up of a game I was playing the other night. In this scenario, the Russians have occupied Bardufoss airbase in northern Norway. The Norwegians are at Bodo airbase in the south and are attempting to defend it from attack. The Russian OOB consistes of 20 SU-27B Flankers and 20 SU-34 Fullbacks. The Norwegians are equipped with 20 Eurofighter Typhoons. The scenario began at 0200 local time. The Norwegians launched a CAP of 4 Typhoons 100 nm north of Bodo over Norway. At the same time the Russians launch a probe of 4 Flankers to see if there is any opposition along their proposed strike flight path which will taje the strike force out to …

That said, does anyone feel that it may be wrong that two AM.39 Exocet Block II missiles remained undetected until immediately before impact on a tanker and an LCS. The LCS had active TRS-3D-16 AS radar. The missiles were launched from 25nm. The missiles have a cruise profile with and are sea skimmers so they would be at very low altitude. I am trying to balance my concern that I may have calculated the engagement wrong versus underappreciating the capabilities of the AM.39 Block2 3rd Gen SS, TM missile. Thanks

Thanks to Brad for listening and commenting on my walk through of a night helo insert into what I now realize is a high anti-air threat environment and now must come up with a new way to insert my "eyes" onto the island. As it turned out unless I can use intervening terrain against the Straight Flush radar of the SA-6b battery, I risk being shot down by a tied-in SA-9b at a pH of 50%, even while flying VLow/NOE. The trick is locating the radar set, especially if it moves frequently. Small Boat insert may be the next option...

**some errors made, nothing too drastic - see Admiralty Trilogy yahoo group ** Direct competition over oil has brought India and China to the brink of war. Over the shipping lanes through the Andaman Sea, a Tu-142 Bear-F Maritime Patrol Aircraft detects a PRC Type 054 Jiankai Class FF escorting a generic oil tanker heading SSE to The People's Republic. On that report, the White Tigers of Indian Naval Air Squadron 300 operating notionally out of Car Nicobar AFS, sortie a section of Sea Harrier FRS.51's armed with 2x Sea Eagle missiles each. Flying in the Low Altitude Band the Sea Harriers, while detected well out, launch 2x Sea Eagles at a range of 19nm. …

Ran through the Intro to H4.1 AAW last night. US wiped up the floor with the Russians 4:0. Each of 4x F/A-18C launched 1x AIM-120's at 40nm. A second salvo of 4x AIM-120 was launched at 33nm before the 4x Russian MiG-29A could respond with their long range threat, R-27R, letting loose with 4x AA-10 Alamo's. AIM-120 4th Gen 7.0 ATA vs MiG-29A 5.0 ATA +1 for 2nd Gen J&D. 7-6=1.0 or =<40%. This is when the dice gods stepped in and the US rolls 16, 19, 84, 19 - three hits. Feeling bad for the opponent, I roll for the 4x Alamo's before the rightful second wave of AIM-120's. R-27R 3rd Gen 5.5 ATA vs F/A-18C 4.5 ATA and 3rd Gen J&D. 5.5-6.5= -1.0 o…
