View File SimPlot2 SimPlot2 (short for simple plotter) provides Harpoon4 paper rules players an opportunity to accurately track the location of units in a graphical environment. Specially made background maps can be used to create a sense of location for the battle. Additional unit graphics can be utilized to enhance game play such as range circles, ESM/Sonar bearing lines, limited unit perception and unit text tags. Multi-player games are possible using a referee to control the movement of units, and to determine the outcome of detection and combat. Player-oriented files are sent from the referee to the players so they can only see whic…

The official Harpoon 5 Jumpstart is released. This is a preview of the H5 rules in the form of a scenario playthrough. The Jumpstart is a free download. It can be downloaded here, and will be available soon at the Wargame Vault (http://wargamevault.com) or at The Admiralty Trilogy (http://www.admiraltytrilogy.com/). For your behind-the-scenes information, the Jumpstart scenario was run by me using SimPlot. There were actually three scenarios executed, with each one resulting in tweaks to the rules, data annexes, or the scenario graphics. The Guardian scenario contained therein is the third and final version. Some changes to SimPlot were also implemented to faci…

Are carriers powerhouses or sitting ducks? Can transatlantic convoys survive in a modern wartime environment? In the cat-and-mouse games between US and Russian submarines, which is better?

I created a simple plotter (SimPlot) program that automates the process of moving units on a simple x,y coordinate system. The objective is to get myself to play H4 paper rules more often by eliminating the problems of graph paper or Neptune's Cat attacks for tabletop games. SimPlot will track time and motion of units. It will also provide range and bearing info to other units. Units can automatically follow other units that are selected as "targets." Unit movement tracks and times can be displayed in case you want to see where you have been. How about a few screenies? I was hoping to show the unit tracks, but it looks like Photobucket may hav…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-8_Crusader “On 7 May 1977, two Crusaders went separately on patrol against supposedly French Air Force (4/11 Jura squadron) F-100 Super Sabres stationed at Djibouti. The leader intercepted two fighters and engaged a dogfight (supposed to be a training exercise) but quickly called his wingman for help as he had actually engaged two Yemeni MiG-21 Fishbeds. The two French fighters switched their master armament to "on" but, ultimately, everyone returned to their bases. This was the only combat interception by French Crusaders.” What if…? At Medium Altitude, the chance encounter ocurs. I pixie dusted the French pilots as Experienced wh…

OK guys, just finished writing up my first AAR. Its a fairly simple affair. Sorry its not written in a more exciting way but for now i was trying to make sure i could run something simple for myself. Comment away if you wish. ____________________________________________________ LA class submarine heading east. Akula class submarine (referred to as AK) heading west, on a collision course with the LA. Yes, a simple and contrived scenario. But I’m more interested in working my way through the rules of Harpoon 4.1. This is my first attempt at it. I’ll reference rules along the way to either help others out or have people comment on my own interpretations…

So, that's the story : bought the H4 boxed set, without realizing it was 4 not 4.1 from a local hobby shop. Paid a bit too much for it (66 Can + 15% taxes, around 75 iirc, they initialled wanted 80 Can, before taxes) to boot. Haven't opened it ( I had doubts after the time it took me to walk home, remembering about 4.1, less than 15 mins ) as I think they stamped it as a final sale due to the rebate, but that's irrelevant : no final sales in Quebec, any retail transaction is protected by a 30 day return in law So I want your input on this : return and order from CoA the high tide, or keep it, make scans of the quickstart rules in exchange for the appendix/compen…

Dear HarpGamers, I enjoyed Dangerous Waters and Sub Command for PC during the last years but due to the global recession and energy crisis decided to try a board game again. Ten years ago I had pretty much fun with Battle Tech and Squad Leader but speaking of Harpoon 4.x I can't gather information about the basic game play mechanics. Since I have to import the game it would be nice if experienced gamer here in the forum could answer some questions listed below. I'm aware of that the one or another question was allready posted but there might be other opinions now so I will ask them again. 1. Imagine a person interested in the Harpoon Game system. Would you recom…

Designed my own scenario based on a Sea of Dragons scenario between the Singapore Navy and Indonesian pirates. 2x Singapore Sea Wolf PGs vs a Fatahillah class FFL and a PB-57 and 2x pirate skiffs as per the excellent 2009 naval review. I used the many rules found here in playing pirate scenarios and adopted them for the Sea of Dragons scenario. The scenario started as the Sea Wolves heading southeast at 20kn. the civilian tanker was stopped with 2x pirate skiffs alongside. Before the pirates captured the tanker the ships captain was able to sent off a distress signal. The Indonesian PB-57 which was collaborating with the pirates was 1000 yards off. The Se…

The most recent Naval Sitrep (#31 I believe) has the Admiraty Trilogy's new air rules. I read through them and studied the examples last night, and look to run through some harpoon era air engagements over the next few days. Has anyone else read or tried these yet?

I have a question regarding the deployment of the escorts in a CVBG especially during the Cold War days of the mid eighties, just at the time the AEGIS system was becoming operational. The way I understand it a carrier would be escorted with a few air defence cruisers and destroyers as well as ASW orientated ships like the Spruance class and frigates. Now, when a carrier turned into the wind and for example had to steam at 30 knots to conduct flight operations, how did that impact the escorts especially the ASW ships? Did they run at that speed too to keep up with the carrier and to maintain station? My understanding is that it has a negative impact on their primary missi…

I've heard there's going to be a new rules version coming out that will provide a common rule set for all the Admiralty Trilogy naval games. Is this true? If so, when is it likely to come out?

One of my favourite games used to be 2nd Fleet, due to its focus on the cold war / greenland-UK-iceland gap. And one of my favouite units froms that game was the "Ticonderoga". With that as my starting point, i set out to find an approximate Soviet equivalent to compare it too. I quickly found the Project 1164 Atlant. I'd never heard of it. The Atlant is same type of ship (CG) and it even has the same build year (1983). On paper, it looks to be the perfect match of NATA v Soviet guided missile cruisers. How do they stack up from a H4.1 point of view? Coming soon 1. Physically 2. Sensors 3. Weapons 4. Overall
