Fourteen years of goodness
One of those "remember when" suggestions came up on Facebook the other day saying it has been 7 years since I finished the HC 20th Anniversary launcher utility. That got me curious what one or two things I would highlight for each year of my tenure as an HC programmer. Items with *s are ones where I did most or all of the coding but each of them took the effort of many people! 2003: Platform Editor - PE WestPac BattleSet 2004: *Mobile Land Units (could have been 2003 but I doubt it) *Base Source Level (BSL) exposed throughout the toolchain so that the database Authors could set a base noise level of a platform for sonar purposes. 2005: *New active ECM model with graduated escort and standoff jamming. *Harpoons can finally be fired at surfaced subs (this beat out Neutrals which happened around this timeframe) 2006: Bug fixes 2007: *BattleSet Builder *ExportDLL interface introduced 2008: *EC2000 BattleSets make their return *Game graphics now loaded from individual images, meaning they can be modded easily. 2009: *Introduced the concept of saved game format conversion as well as the concept of the option to have saved games in progress as BattleSet Builder scenarios so that planes can start in the air and such. *Game clock can be stopped without the Pause dialog so player can give orders while paused. 2010: *Masking of unit icons in formation editor finally fixed 2011: *Bug fixes 2012: *Use more than the first six sensors on a platform 2013: *Re-made USNI scenarios can be used in the full game *Reworked gunfire mechanics 2014: *32-bit Scenario Editor so that scenarios can be edited on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 2015: *Revamped air to air refueling. Tankers can now offload fuel multiple times per sortie among other goodness. *4096 items per database annex are now useable instead of 2047 2016: *Gradual heading and altitude changes

Playing HCE as a blind gamer
Happy belated Birthday! July 21st was the last time I worked on the first add-on for you (setting courses). Don't hold your breath waiting . Real-life work keeps me very busy these days. that should eventually change, just not sure when. What is the old DOS space sim?

HCE Release Notes
HCE - 2016.006 - 2016-07-18 =========================== - Chg:I154 GE Periscope depth and VLow were both set to 15m, resulting in the mini-report window saying aircraft were at periscope depth. Changed periscope depth to +2m for visibiity purposes. Note that existing saved games will continue to say Periscope until the affected unit changes depth. The enthusiasm is great, the audience is minimal at best .

Hopelessly out of date
Welcome back Mike! 3.6.3 will probably serve you best unless you do some major updates to your DB to match the game engine changes in the newer 3.xx versions.

HCE Release Notes
HCE - 2016.005 - 2016-07-15 =========================== - Chg:I153 GE Turns and Depth changes that are a part of the initial orders in the SE will happen at the first tick of the game clock in the GE and will be instaneous since they represent start-state in the scenario and shouldn't be treated as triggers for graduals turns and altitude changes like they were in 2016.004. (thanks eeustice) http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/tracker/issue-153-sub-depth-and-course-in-hc-2016004/?gopid=763&do=findComment&comment=763 HCE - 2016.004 - 2016-07-11 =========================== - Chg:0000 GE Extended beta expiration out a ways. - Chg:0000 GE Aircraft turns that were previously delayed to simulate gradual turns now actually are gradual turns. Rather than doing the entire turn at the end of the delay, the turn is split into one second chunks and executed per second. - Chg:0000 GE Added gradual turns for all other group types as well except missile and torpedo groups. - Chg:0000 GE Incremented DLL Interface version to 16 for the following... - Chg:0000 GE ExportDLL interface added Altitude in meters to the UnitAlt function. - Chg:0000 GE Incremented saved game version to support the changes below. - Chg:0000 GE Added Altitude to SpeedAltEvent structure so that ALT_SPEED_EVENTs can handle gradual altitude changes. !!!Use ALT_ALTITUDE_EVENTs, not ALT_SPEED_EVENTs!!! - Chg:0000 GE Added ALT_ALTITUDE_EVENT event type for gradual altitude changes. - Chg:0000 GE Added code to allow turning of individual units gradually. Notated code with, "// TODO Gradual turns units" where there are good candidates for gradual turning of units such as a need to re-establish formation station-keeping or turns while aircraft are loitering.

Not quite lost .. but....darn close!
For the help file give https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=91a try. That said, the winhelp formatted help files are horribly out of date. There are PDF manuals included in the package you bought that are only mildly out of date . Best to ask questions here and we'll help as time permits.

BlindGuyNW, do you think the capabilities in the previous post would be helpful? They are just baby steps but still something.

Playing HCE as a blind gamer
Oy Don, what do you think of the following? You did a lot of groundwork in the toolbox. Would you be willing to start putting together some functionality on this front? I would start by looking at the situation where the player has detected an enemy submarine and must localize that submarine. I'm thinking an ExportDLL that lists detected enemy submarines that may be in range of airborne ASW assets for localization. Once an enemy submarine group/unit is selected, list the friendly ASW air groups in range. The player can select one or more to localize then apply your magic to undertake a search. If/when the submarine is localized, tell the user. Just this fairly simple use-case has multiple chunks of functionality to develop that should be able to pretty much stand on their own. Thoughts? I'm looking at: Phase 1: An ExportDLL listing player groups that can accept a course. Selecting a group brings up a dialog prompting for an altitude, heading, speed, and distance to travel. Double-check that the distance is possible before accepting it. Phase 2: Add a run-aground check? Phase 3: Add awareness of detected enemy groups? (Do you really want to close within #nm of enemy installation ZYa?)

File - HCCW-140314 (1950-75 era)
I know the HCWW is on indefinite hiatus but should there be a future update I'm interested in USS Brule, APA-66. Not much use in game terms but interesting from a personal perspective knowing someone who served on her.

No progress other than some scheming. Please rattle my cage in a month or so, I'd like to get you some course-entering help by then, at least a first stab at it for your commentary.

DID - Five Year Extension on Paveway-II Missile Production
Wow, the ability to autonomously land a helo on a frigate doing 25 kts in 15 mile/sec winds is far more than impressive (see typo in full article).

New Scenario - No Computer
Ohh, so let me get this right... The minor problem is that you can't find your HC installer, the major problem is that you have no computer? Just trying to understand since getting a copy of HC if you know what e-mail address was used to purchase it isn't a huge deal.

New Scenario - No Computer
Any luck?

New Scenario - No Computer
I'd just as rather help you get a new copy of the game or recover your existing copy. If it was a direct purchase from Matrix Games and you still have access to the same e-mail account, open a support ticket with them. When all else fails, let me know and we will work something out.

Twilight Struggle
I had it, bought it at Origins back when I met DonG. I think it went to Brains (or you?). Never played a real game but playing both sides by myself made it look like it is something special.

Turn rates for aircraft ... and beyond
The groundwork is starting to bear fruit... Time compression starts out at 5:1 and later I set it back to 1:1. Note turns in progress are instantly cancelled when a new turn command is given.

HCE Release Notes
HCE - 2016.003 - 2016-03-23 =========================== - Chg:0000 GE Incremented saved game version to support the changes below. - Chg:0000 GE Added Altitude to Unit structure so that we can change altitude gradually. Previously we only tracked the band. The altitude is a signed long long (aka int64) and measured in meters meaning one could go way beyond the Sun. For scenario and existing saved game purposes we will assume the platform is at the very bottom of the altitude band when above sea level and at the top of the altitude band when below sea level. - Chg:I149 GE Added targetGroup to LaunchLandEvent so that we can send aircraft on their attack once they are launched. The functionality was broken in 2016.002. (thanks Buddha) http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/tracker/issue-149-cant-launch-p-3-for-asw-attack/
