I believe some Muslims feel that people who are not "Of the book" deserve less respect than those who are. The Taliban blowing up the ancient Buddha statues in Afghanistan was another example of this. Also, the fanatics seem to get really fired up when they are out of the Islamic element of the ME. I knew literally hundreds of Muslims when I worked in the KSA, and only one guy ever tried to convert me. I told him I could lose my job for discussing politics or religion, and I never heard another word about it. I sometimes wonder how things would be if the European powers had left the whole area from Algeria to Bangladesh to their inhabitant's own devices instead of carving it up into colonies and then bailing out and leaving the borders they had created behind. Although you'd probably be hard pressed to find one of these fanatics knowledgable enough about history to be aware of it, the Arab/Israeli conflict is a matter of politics, not religion. In Islam, Christians and Jews are considered to be "People of the Book", and therefore to be respected. There is no Islamic prohibition against intermarriage, for instance. The only requirement is that the man must either be Muslim or convert, since the father's religion is controlling as far as children are concerned. (I had a coworker in the KSA who married an Egyptian woman, and conversion is quite an ordeal, including learning a lot of Arabic). The root of the hostility was the creation of the state of Israel, making it less than 100 years old. Although there has been some ongoing friction between the different religions, as there always is between people with conflicting views on matters of faith, Israel's founding really kicked things off. The '67 and '73 wars certainly didn't help matters any either, especially the Arab's humiliation in '67. Buddha

It seems that any doubt that the attackers were Muslim radicals has been removed. Pakistani government involvement is another matter. From my experiences in Saudi Arabia, I've learned that there is little any government can do to control these guys. The Wahabi's in the KSA helped Abdulazziz gain control of the Kingdom at its original formation, and the Al-Saud clan is still stuck with them. I don't know about Abdullah, but Fahd said more than once he'd like to be rid of them, but couldn't find a way to accomplish that. I doubt the Pakistani government will do much better. Buddha

That was a little before my CV tour, but I believe they carried the SH-3 for this purpose. This article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SH-3_Sea_King seems to bear that out. I know in the case of the Midway, the ASW capability was added in '83 or '84, at which time we switched from the CH-3 to the SH-3. This correlates to the S-61 you mention. Buddha

Other than having no starting speeds entered, which is easily fixed, the scenario loads and plays fine on my system. You'll find an alert under scenario analysis about the need to enter the starting speed. Starting speed in the SE can be a little tricky at first. I normally enter the course(s) I want, and then reopen the course setting dialog and backtrack to the starting point. You can then assign the speed you wish, as well as direct speed changes at waypoints if desired. You can also include sensor orders here. You'll also want to create orders for Red and Blue to include with your scenario so the player will be aware of what his mission objectives are. The Orders Writer can do this for you easily once you've decided on the Background/Objectives you have in mind. I hope this helps you. Buddha

Welcome to HarpGamer. I'm sorry to hear you're having problems. If you can ZIP up your scenario and post it, maybe I or someone else can try it out and figure out the problem. One thing I can think of you can try. After you create your scenario, do a complete analysis of it (Misc/Analyze Scenario/Complete Analysis), and make sure all warnings are attended to. As to the PE, the menu shortcut should point the the file pfBuild2005.mdb in your Harpoon folder. If the shortcut doesn't work, try opening Explorer and accessing the file directly by double clicking it. This should open the main PE page in MS Access.`Before doing any data manipulation, be sure to read and adhere all the warnings and instructions in the manual, or you can really wreak havoc on your game. Hope this helps. I don't doubt this group will have you designing, creating, and editing platforms and scenarios in a short time. I look foreward to playing one of your giant creations. Buddha

Looks like the Grayback, which was out of Subic for years. She was originally designated SSG-574, and in '68 she was retooled as an LPSS. I tried several times for orders to Grayback, admittedly because of her home port. She was decommisioned there in '84. Buddha

My father was from Chicago, but he grew up bilingual, speaking English and German. During WWII, he did some translating for POWs, and although he never spoke much about details, apparently alot of Germans were surprized that the US sided with Great Britain, since we had fought 2 wars against them, the Revolution and 1812. I shipped out of Sasebo for 4 years and Yoko for 8, and I've heard alot of different viewpoints expressed by my Japanese friends and acquaintances. I have to admit that I never heard Tamogami’s from anyone I ever met though. It's been my experience that the Asian way of looking at these things differs substantially from the way we do in the West. My wife is a Filipina, and she has what seems like a genetic resentment toward the Japanese fot their occupation of the PI, even though it was long over before she was born, and the offenders are dead and buried. For myself, although I appreciate the fact of Pearl Harbor, and grew up listening to my parents discuss it, it would never enter my mind to hold it against anyone I met or had as a neighbor when I lived in Japan. I noticed something unusual while playing HDS8 IOPG Scenario 06.0. When ESM indicates detection of hostile A/C, the standard dialogue appears asking what you want to do. If I choose Intercept, in most cases the only A/C that appear as available to intercept the contact are S-3's with ASW loadouts, as if the contact were a sub and not an A/C. This is in spite of FA-18's in patrol sectors with Air to Air loadouts. Buddha

Maybe mumbling "I never got Vista, I still have XP" will help me get over the stupid mistake I made getting this Vista system to begin with. My brother warned me I should wait until at least 2 Service Packs had been released to upgrade, but I didn't listen. M$ is no help as usual. They want $60 just to tell me their OS is flawless and everyone else is screwed up. The fact that some Windows components, such as Explorer also stop "Responding" seems to make no difference to them. I'm back to getting the old Vista "Not Responding" whenever I try to use time compression in any scenario with 2008.061. Sometimes it passes, sometimes not. I'm also getting the "Program has stopped working" on exit, which went away for a while. I think it's apparent that Vista has had a problem running Harpoon from the initial inability to use the Help menu through the ever present "Not Responding" for which Vista is famous. I don't blame Harpoon for this, I blame Vista, which is the biggest disaater since the Edsel if you ask me. I'll continue testing as best I can, but I can't promise anything constructive until wahtever is causing the compatibility problems is worked out by people far more knowledgeable than I am. Buddha

That certainly explains that. Maybe since a surface or sub group consists of classes of units with more than one name per class, as opposed to land bases which are pretty much either there or not there, would explain the difference. By that I mean that a sub group consisting of one LA Class submarine has several options as to which actual submarine it is, whereas the AFB at Yokota, for instance, doesn't have that sort of variable. In that case, it seems it would be less frustrating to the player if the option were simply unavailable where it is inappropriate, as opposed to resulting in one of those cryptic error messages.
