In the wake of the Ft. Hood tragedy, I keep hearing about the need for diversity in the military. As a resident of San Diego, I've heard "diversity" used to justify everything from campus riots to illegal immigration, and I'm rapidly growing tired of the term. It's been close to 40 years since my Recruit Training experience, but it seems to me that diversity was one of the things the training attempted to eliminate, or at least minimize. Wasn't one of the points of shaving our heads, sticking us in uniforms, and generally treating us all like dogs to force us to forget our differences and bond as a unit? Isn't that what we want in a fighting unit? Or has political correctness taken us to the point where all opinions and voices must be heard and considered before the unit acts on its orders. What's next? Maybe voting on wether to carry out orders would be a good idea, after an airing of all diverse viewpoints of course. God help us all. Buddha

Perhaps try double-clicking OrdWrite.exe directly from the game directory and let us know what happens (even if all you see a window flash up and go away). This one mystifies me a bit since I haven't had the orders writer not run. Before I went back to XP, I had some pretty strange Vista experiences with various things not running. Occasionally they are caused by things running in the background that seemingly have no relation to the problem. I had an RPG Character editor did the same thing mentioned here until I disabled a Virtual Encrypted Drive program running in the background. What I'd suggest, if all else fails, is to use msconfig to disable all start-up programs and see if that solves the problem. If it does, then reenable them one at a time until the culprit is located. A little time consuming, but I've solved more than one problem this way. Buddha

Vista problems, what a shock. Are you getting any sort of error message? Also, did the install run OK? That infuriating User Account Control may have caused a problem with your install. I had some difficulties myself before I wen t back to XP, but never to the point where anything wouldn't run at all. Buddha

Tony's got it right as regards the news, that's for sure. I don't know how it is in Canada, but here in the US the news is far more about ratings and cash from sponsors than it is about informing the public. This is especially true since the advent of 24 hour cable news networks and the internet. These are the reasons you'll see mostly extremis points of view aired and the truth is usually somewhere in the middle. It's also why anything with even a hint of sex will push everything else to the side when it comes to coverage. Hell, they're still pursuing John Edwards about some affair, even though he's basically a private citizen, and some new angle about Anna Nicole Smith's doctors making out with her has breathed new life into that tired old story. I was working in the KSA for the whole Monica Lewinski thing, and the Europeans I worked with couldn't understand why Clinton's sexual antics were such a big deal. Even the Saudi's, for all their weirdness about sex, thought we went overboard on that one. Now we've got a new prime time TV show about some politician getting caught with a hooker, and how his wife copes with the situation (I watched it last night, and it's actually pretty good). "Death Panels", which is supposed to be a bunch of cats who decide that a person has outlived their usefulness and should be allowed to die, are fiction. That won't make the media hesitate to play the controversy for all it's worth though. If the people suffer as a result, that's just too bad. Buddha

I wasn't aware of a C64 version either. I had the Mac and Amiga versions, both of which I have on emulators now, as well as all of the DOS/Windows versions, thanks to Tony's project. I do have a WinVice Emulator which can run C64 and C128 stuff, and I wouldn't mind seeing Harpoon run on it. Unfortunately, I didn't think Tony would be interested in either the Amiga or Mac stuff, and so I offered it too late for inclusion as well. Buddha

The hassle over E-Mails from the administration, and the attendant attention paid to them by FOX news and others embarasses me as an American. Who among us doesn't empty SPAM from our in-boxes? First, let me make sure I have the correct file. I DLd the ZIP file containing the following files: Port2w.scq, bkq, blq, & rdq. The scenario plays OK as either RED or BLUE on my system without any DB modifications. I have build 2009.037 installed. I've gotten the errors you describe in the past, and although there are other group members who understand them far better than I do, it's always seemed to have been the result of DB tweaking I've done. If it helps any, my PE reports my current DB name as HCDB-090620. Buddha

Based on my years in the KSA, this doesn't surprize me at all. The prevailing sentiment among the Saudis I knew and worked with was that they didn't really give a rats ass about Israel at all, but had to make noise occasionally out of Islamic solidarity. The RSNF Captain who oversaw our shop told me once that the best thing he could see happening to the Palestinians was that they simply disappear of the face of the earth.
