Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon 3.

  1. Started by Mgellis,

File Name: Baltic Squeeze (1980) File Submitter: Mgellis File Submitted: 11 Jul 2013 File Category: Scenarios My 24th scenario of the year... A nice, basic Cold War scenario, set in 1980, in which West German forces must ambush a Soviet convoy headed for East Germany. It's one of those scenarios where, if you are careful, it is not too hard to win, but if you are not careful, it is very easy to lose. 2. Here is a near future scenario I'd like feedback on. Sometime in the next five years, the Cuban leader, another Castro is assassinated. His successor is not up to handling the crisis and Cuba erupts into civil war, the factions being those who support the old regime and those who want to see a complete change of government, restored relations with the U.S., etc. Within six months, the U.S. decides to openly support the rebels. It sends supplies, but not actual troops. It does, however, cheerfully sink most of the Cuban navy. Just as a precaution. Allies of the Cuban regime attempt to support it, but the U.S. creates a blockade. Not as extreme, perhaps, as the on…

I would like to create a Harpoon scenario in the near future and would like to include one of my favourite fictional aircraft, the MiG-31 "Firefox" from the Craig Thomas novel. Possibles: * A carrier strike * A land mission * An AAW battle with a US version. Maybe 20 on each side. Thoughts?

It falls to the Eisenhower, her battle group, and several squadrons of Greek and U.S. Air Force aircraft to solidify control of the Eastern Mediterranean in the early hours of the war. 5. Started by Mgellis,

Friends, I've been playing around with some concepts for H3 scenarios. As I want to keep them at least quasi-believable, I would be grateful if fellow board members would give me some feedback on them. This can be a simple "rating" (e.g., "Definitely possible," "Possible but unlikely," or "No, that's a silly idea") although any other comments would also be very welcome. The first one is for a set of Cold War scenarios, working title is "Battle Ocean 1985." The basic premise is that the Soviet Union declares war, but restricts its activity to submarine warfare against Western shipping. Its goal is not territory but to weaken the U.S. and its allies, force vario…

Hi everybody! Some of you may remember me as the creator of many monster scenarios at HarpoonHQ. Well, I still love the DB2K and have written my first ANW scenario under it. How do I get it published for testing? Thanks. Cheers, Klaus Behrmann

  7. A couple of quick questions... First, on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being "This will happen" and 1 being "Not in a million years"), how likely is it that we might see an Iran-style Islamic revolution in Turkey and Egypt by, say, 2016? Second, assuming these revolutions happened, on a scale of 1 to 10, how likely are the following events (either as isolated events or as a cluster of related, perhaps coordinated events)... A) Egypt does not close the Suez Canal, but does raise fees and starts making many costly and time-consuming inspections of ships from countries it does not like--in effect, they are waging economic war against the E.U., Israel, etc. Egy…

  9. Okay, here is my newest attempt at an H3 scenario. Basically, Chile is ticked off at people using their fisheries and decides to shoot up some fishing boats; Japan sends warships to protect their trawlers, and it's not long before things head south. You can only play the Japanese side. Please let me know what you think. Thanks. Mark chil20a1.zip

Hi Tony, for rewriting and expanding my Pason-battleset (for HUD 3) I use your tool H3dsdedit - great one! I´ve got two questions related to that: 1. Is it possible to edit an existing dsd-file? 2. Is it possible to extract the text from a dsd-file an copy in (using H3dsdedit) into a new dsd-file? tia Ralf

I'm suddenly having the devil's own time making boarding/takeover missions work. I designed a small Persian Gulf scenario loosely based on one we used when I worked in Saudi Arabia at the Multi Environmental Trainer. When I originally built the scenario, I was able to launch a CH-53 loaded with Marines from my airfield and capture an enemy comm center and a UH1 Iriquois from a Medina class FF to board and take over an enemy tanker. After applying some update or other somewhere along the line, I lost the scenario and had to redo it. Now, the shore based raiding party won't capture the facility, but insists on attacking and destroying it. The helo from the ship acce…

One thing I really like about ANW is how you can tweak the ships for realism by modifying what weapons they have onboard. For a scenario set in 1981, what would have been the likely missile loads for a Leahy-class cruiser (Halsey, CG 23) and Adams-class destroyers (Hoel & Berekely, DDG-13 and DDG-15)? The Leahy-class is listed as "85+" and I know there was a major upgrade program in the 1980s...how much did the Leahy change between 1981 and 1985? Should I replace the Standard missiles with the Tartars (an available loadout)? What about doing this for the Adams-class ships, or is it okay the use the default setting of the RIM-66B? Any other suggestions …

  14. Started by Mgellis,

I've been discussing one of my scenarios with JSF and one of the issues that has come up is that the AI for ANW often makes dumb mistakes that make it less challenging to play against. I honestly don't know how "smart" the ANW AI is, but what I'd like to do in this thread is collect whatever tricks designers have come up with for making the AI more dangerous. While there are probably limits to what can be done, I imagine it is possible to give the AI better tactical performance by setting up missions, patrol zones, etc. in certain ways. And I imagine there are ways to take advantage of things like geography, civilian air traffic, etc. that make it harder to be…

  15. Over the years, I've found a couple of books and articles like Sources of Conflict in the 21st Century that outline various scenarios for future conflicts (e.g., a war between Russia and the Ukraine). There are very useful, as one might imagine, for creating Harpoon scenarios. I want to read more of them! I suspect there are a lot of these floating around, but I've only found a few of them. Who publishes them? Where can I find them? Are they available online? I imagine various countries' defense departments wrote up a bunch of them--planning war games, etc.--were they ever made available to the public? I'm interested both in recent ones and historical ones …

  16. Started by Mgellis,

Quick question... If I add an ammo dump to an airfield, and want to use Aircraft Logistics, can I modify what is in a particular ammo dump? For example, could I take out all the Harpoons from a US ammo dump ("Sorry, we used them all...you'll have to rely on iron bombs!")? Or add other kinds of ammunition? If so, how do you do this? (I mean in a particular scenario, like editing the number of aircraft at a base...I do NOT want to be messing around with the actual database...that way, I am sure, tragedy lies...) I am using the HUD3 database right now. Or is it something that is fixed, each ammunition dump is a database entry like a ship, and what you ge…

The Hunt for The Arctic Sea Hi - I'm a new member to the forum but always been a fan of the Harpoon Classic Edition. Continued under the Harpoon Commanders Edition banner by Matrix Games. Bearing in mind players love of new scenarios - particularly those based on actual events. I'm surprised no ones mooted the idea of creating a scenario based on the mysterious events surrounding the disappearence of the russian cargo ship Artic Sea. Supposedly taken by Pirates and for which coastguards lost communications with, when the pirates switched off all comms & satellite tracking system - when it entered the busiest shipping lane in the world - namely the Engli…

  19. I'm working on some ideas for realistic Cold War scenarios involving Soviets, and I'm trying to figure out something. Under what circumstances would you have the Soviet Navy shooting at people, possibly even NATO ships, c. 1985, where things do not rapidly turn into a global exchange of nuclear weapons? Some ideas... 1. Spies on the run. Submarines on both sides probably sneaked in close to enemy shores all the time to gather intelligence, etc. I'm guessing that if those submarines had been forced to surface, perhaps even fired on, there would have been a lot of grumbling from the country that sent them and maybe a tit-for-tat response like sending an ambass…

Made a scenerio with a ton of SAM's, surface and sub-surface units, airborne and ready aircraft at nearby enemy bases. Just met the objectives with no losses. Can the enemy aircraft, ships and SAM's be made more aggressive? Does the difficulty settings change this?
