Back in 1998 I started war-gaming by playing Avalon Hill's Advanced Squad Leader, and I still have my original rule book, game boards with 5 expansions, and 2,000 plus game counters carefully stored in two large fishing tackle boxes that I protect with my life. I currently play TacOps4, and I like to have as many details as possible for weapon systems and tactics as I can. I was extremely excited when TacOps4 came bundled with 167 different US Military Field, Technical, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Manuals in pdf format (with searchable text). I have only played land warfare up until now. I discovered Harpoon just a month ago when I was reading an analogy that TacOps was…

Tony or Brad: Are there specific instructions on how to utilize the battleset builder program. Via trial and error I've figured out part of it but I can't get my test battleset to be read by the scenario editor. It created a HCBS file but that appears to be incorrect. I'm trying to create a Hawaii battleset with an embedded database as a test. I got the map to work under the "my battleset" and the scenario editor sees that battleset. However, the battleset I'm trying to create, "test 1" with a Hawaii map (rsr file ?) and with an embedded database. Something was saved as a HCBS file, but it is not read or accessed by the scenario editor. 1. When embedding da…

Matrix has released 2008.044 as a non-beta patch. Read about it and grab it from http://www.matrixgames.com/news/534/Larry....tion.Is.Updated If you already have the 2008.044 beta there is no need to re-download as you already have the proper files. As usual we're already hard at work on the next patch. Some of the highlights of the 2008.044 patch are: 2008.025 to 2008.044 Changes: New Features: • BattleSet Builder - Databases may now be embedded in user BattleSets, to distribute a map, scenarios, and database in one package the user need only distribute two files. • Split most sounds for the game into individual wav files enabling the user to customiz…

Okay, I'm using the HCDB-080712. I've got a group of a dozen SV-22s squatting on top of an Akula which is running at 35 knots at Deep. I've got a rock-solid lock on Mr. Akula, both from sonobuoys and dipping sonar. Range is about a mile. I've fired off at least half a dozen Mk 50s, moving to bracket the sub as necessary. So WTF are the torps just sailing right past the sub as if they can't see it?!?!?!?!?!? Has the acquisition radius on the torps gotten screwed up again?

I downloaded and updated my game engine to the 2008.0047 release and noticed something interesting... Flankers are impervious to missiles! 6 Flankers coming out of Norway (NACV Battleset) were confronted by 12 Phamtom's and 4 Tornado's with a total of 64 LR Air-to-air Missiles... and within 15 nm of the targets and all I was able to get for 64 launches was one kill! So when did we change vendors for the Skyflash/Sparrow Missiles?..

I noticed this in HC2002, and now in HCE (which I have recently purchased)- TLAM missiles are listed as being for SURF targets, yet they are unable to target ships. There is a separate weapon for each of TASM and Tactical Tomahawk, but neither of these are implemented in most of the USA VLS platforms. This seems to neuter the CG-47/DDG-51/SSGN-726 as ASuW platforms, as well as limiting the capabilities of the SSN-688/21/774.

Hi everybody, I'm trying to reinstall my old HC on my new PC, but I don't seem to remember well the steps to have the whole thing working. I installed it by the hcgold_full.exe installer, but now I cannot use the EC2003 default battleset, since I receive the message the the game can only be played by the registered COMMONDB version. I have my serial number and the key Bruce sent me in the old days, but the registration seems ininfluent for the game. I can actually play the other default Battleset. Can someone help me with some advice? My HC version is the 2003.15, Dec 19, 2003 (release) Thank you Francesco Cozzi

Replace the GR_ICONS.BMP in "Matrix Games\HCE\Graphics" with the GR_ICONS.BMP file contained within the attached zip file, remembering to backup your original file should these icons not work as expected or be to your taste. HarpGamer, in conjunction with Advanced Gaming Systems Inc (AGSI) and Matrix Games, is launching what we call the “HCE Challenge”. The Harpoon Commander’s Edition (HCE) Challenge will be, for all intents and purposes, a scenario design contest, the goals of which will include: • providing an interesting, enjoyable and potentially rewarding way to learn how to write scenarios for HCE; and • generating new and challenging scenarios for potential inclusion in the new official HCE BattleSets: Caribbean, South Atlantic, South Africa and the Middle East). The HCE Challenge will have a competitive aspect, and the “winners” will receive rewards which may include any …

I just discovered a whole new way to lose aircraft in the game. I've been playtesting a scenario I wrote, set in the North Atlantic. I had just finished wiping out a SAG with carrier air when I got a Keyhole hit on an SSK near the Azores, and sent a pack of SV-22s to kill it. The SSK turned out to be a wolfpack, and halfway through the hunt my Ospreys started blowing up! So I sent an EA-18 out to look for the troublemaker, and much to my surprise, it found a wayward DDG from the SAG, run aground on one of the islands. I'm glad that the AI doesn't blithely sail *across* the land any more, but I have to admit that this particular consequence of that improvement hadn't reall…

im kind of wondering how hce handles asw patrols by aircraft. I send out a p-3 or a s-3 on a patrol, and making sure the loadout is asw, and once they get to the location of the patrol, all they do it seems is fly around in circles, loitering...arent they supposewd to start a line of sonobuoys? or maybe a box MAD search? Or am i not doing something, or doing something wrong? Any help or tips would be great

Question for the programmers: would it be possible to arrange things so that the detection range circles are displayed relative to the 'active' unit? eg A B-52 is the active (currently 'clicked on') unit, so the range circle of the Red Mainstay shows ~300 nm detection radius. I then click on a nearby F-22 escorting the B-52, and the range circle for the Mainstay drops to, I dunno, maybe 40 nm? It was a lot easier to guestimate the safe zones when aircraft were either 'large' or 'small' ...

I was just playing a scenario where the red side was equipped with SA-5 SAMs. The SA-5 apparently detected the blue aircraft at medium altitude and at a fairly long range. The SAM fired. The missile was detected and the blue unit was ordered to a low altitude. At the range in question the blue unit should have broken radar lock as it was below the radar horizon. The missile should have failed to guide. In addition the SA-5 has a minimum altitude rating of medium so it should not follow the blue unit down to low altitude. Correct? However, it did and shot down one the blue unit aircraft. Are the altitude limitations working? Steve M
