Tomahawk ASM

Featured Replies

I noticed this in HC2002, and now in HCE (which I have recently purchased)- TLAM missiles are listed as being for SURF targets, yet they are unable to target ships. There is a separate weapon for each of TASM and Tactical Tomahawk, but neither of these are implemented in most of the USA VLS platforms. This seems to neuter the CG-47/DDG-51/SSGN-726 as ASuW platforms, as well as limiting the capabilities of the SSN-688/21/774.

Only the TASM (Tomahawk Anti-Ship Missile) can be targeted only against surface ships. The TLAM (Tomahawk Land Attack Missile) is for use against only land targets.

TASM was withdrawn from US Navy service in or about 1992, and since the stock scenarios included with the game focus on the EC2003 Battlesets, you won't find the TASM in many ship/submarine loadouts (if any).

TASMs were withdrawn in the early 1990s for being more trouble then they were worth, IIRC. It's very difficult to effectively target an enemy ship 800nm away with a missile that takes over an hour to get there.

Max range for TASM was 250 nm, but yes, targeting a vessel at that kind of range with a subsonic missile (and lacking any kind of midcourse update) was difficult. A decently fast enemy warship could move a considerable distance in the time it took the TASM to reach it.

True... most were bunkered but some were also used to reduce the modification costs for the TLAM's.
