OK guys, just finished writing up my first AAR. Its a fairly simple affair. Sorry its not written in a more exciting way but for now i was trying to make sure i could run something simple for myself. Comment away if you wish. ____________________________________________________ LA class submarine heading east. Akula class submarine (referred to as AK) heading west, on a collision course with the LA. Yes, a simple and contrived scenario. But I’m more interested in working my way through the rules of Harpoon 4.1. This is my first attempt at it. I’ll reference rules along the way to either help others out or have people comment on my own interpretations…

Morning all, This may sound like a stupid question, but where in the hotel are the rules for night time operations? I have searched the paper rules and can't find squat on it. The reason I'm asking is because I'm working on a hypothetical scenario about a night surface action between the Argentine and Royal Navy units in 1982 and can't find any data on whether the Lynx helos used by each side were VFR only or not. If the helo's were not able to fly it would greatly complicate targeting because the aircraft would have to use radar. The RN's use of Sea Skua's would also be greatly curtailed. Many thanks in advance. D

Dear HarpGamers, I enjoyed Dangerous Waters and Sub Command for PC during the last years but due to the global recession and energy crisis decided to try a board game again. Ten years ago I had pretty much fun with Battle Tech and Squad Leader but speaking of Harpoon 4.x I can't gather information about the basic game play mechanics. Since I have to import the game it would be nice if experienced gamer here in the forum could answer some questions listed below. I'm aware of that the one or another question was allready posted but there might be other opinions now so I will ask them again. 1. Imagine a person interested in the Harpoon Game system. Would you recom…

    1) A Mirage 2000 and F-15 are approaching one another. The Mirage is armed with Magic AtA missile which has a range of 6.0nm while the F-15 is armed with a Sidewinder with a range of 9.6nm. Does this mean the F-15 gets to fire its AtA missile first since it will be in range first (using engagement turns)? And depending on the missile and planes speeds, the sidewinder may shoot down the Mirage before it gets within range to fire its Magic (within 6.0nm)? (Maybe i have answered my own question, rule 6.3.3.2.1 says in the engagment turn a missile reaches a plane the plane must evade and therefore cant fire). If the sidewinder does not reach the mirage before t…

Is it feasible to run a scenario solo, knowing where all the units are located and their strengths? Or is it kind of like trying to play chess against yourself where you have to try and forget what strategy you were using against the other side. Are there any good scenarios specifically set up for soloing or are they all slanted towards playing an opponent? Steve

  9. So, been reading, thinking about what I'll run first scenario wise, and mostly thinking how I'm going to do it so I can play on my computer, against human opponents, either pbem or live, with no human referee (albeit it should be possible to have one) First try will be a VASSAL module, as it already has live capabilities versus cyberboard that only does pbem (afaik). Now, it wouldn't include the rules, or automatic resolution of combat : the only automated part would be a fog of war to replace having a human referee plot everyone's moves. So as not to step on Uncle Harpoon's toes, et al. e.g you input your detection dice roll, the "ref" checks if you have anythi…

I have a question regarding the deployment of the escorts in a CVBG especially during the Cold War days of the mid eighties, just at the time the AEGIS system was becoming operational. The way I understand it a carrier would be escorted with a few air defence cruisers and destroyers as well as ASW orientated ships like the Spruance class and frigates. Now, when a carrier turned into the wind and for example had to steam at 30 knots to conduct flight operations, how did that impact the escorts especially the ASW ships? Did they run at that speed too to keep up with the carrier and to maintain station? My understanding is that it has a negative impact on their primary missi…

While attempting to fill in an H4.1 ship data form, I've run into a brain-freeze. I was trying to replicate the O.H. Perry example found on page 2-4 of the H4.1 Rulebook. A Mk75 76mm Naval Gun in Air Defense mode has a 3.5nm Air Range, 0.40 01-50% Ph/Mt, a 0.25 51-100% Ph/Mt, a maximum altitude of High, and RA/EO. How was the Air Range Close of 1.9 and Air Range Far of 3.8, in the example, calculated? There will be more questions as I crawl through this process. Thanks,

"By the way, can you explain this whole Intermediate Turn to Tactical Turn change thing? I don't quite understand how it works. " The answer lies between 2.2.2 Intermediate Turn Sequences and 2.2.5 Transitioning to Shorter Turns. It is simply a tool to prevent unexpected things happening too quickly because the current game turn is 30min or 3min. When going from thirty minute Intermediate Turns to three minute Tactical Turns, it depends on when a player declares going to a shorter turn, either the Plotting or Detection Phases. For Intermediate Turns, simply the next turn starts in the Plotting Phase of a three minute Tactical Turn. If due to speed of a previ…

A sub v sub scenario from the High Tide boxed set. This is my second AAR based on sub verse sub. I know a bit more about the rules so more stuff might come into play. I’m also plotting movement on graph paper for the first time, rather than just having two subs approach each other and measuring closing distance. LA class submarine is up against an Oscar sub and tensions are high with sea state 4, so neither has deployed their towed array sonar in case they need to suddenly manoeuvre. The LA is very quiet while the Oscar (quiet) has a better hull mounted sonar … actually, checking the stats and I found my first mistake. I used the LA’s hull mounted sonar with …

Hi guys this is officially my first post. I start the proceedings with two questions that might have already been asked. So just bear with me for a moment . I've read the posts on H4 paper rules and I found them extremely interesting and informative. So much so that H4 is on its way to me from the US, (no dealers locally). I have been the proud owner of H3 by GDW for a few years and I also own H3 ANW for PC but it just does not have the same enjoymement level that I experience with the paper rules. So, having expelled much hot air here is my questions: I have read about a plotting board used for gaming (I think solitaire games). Where is it possible to obta…

F-15E strike mission An F-15E is approaching enemy air space. A Mirage 2000 is scrambled to intercept. Initial range is 80nm and the Mirage picks the F-15 up on radar. Its not until the planes reach 60nm the F-15 picks up the Mirage. Both planes are at medium altitude. The planes close quickly, and engagement turns (30 second turns) ensure. The F-15 is armed with a Sidewinder AtA missile which has a range of 9.5nm, giving it more reach than the Magic the Mirage is carrying (6nm). The F-15 fires both its Sidewinders at 9nm. 6.3.3.2.2 says that 1 in 5 AtA missiles clear the rails but fail to function. Die rolls of 6 and 8 mean both of these AtA miss…

OK, i've placed a soviet Akula class submarine in front of a USA "fleet". I've given the fleet 4 layers if you like, and i'm ignoring air support at this stage. Can the Akula penetrate the layers and get a shot off at the Nimitz??? 1st layer is the picket, where our Akula has to try and stealth past a Perry class warship. She is a small and quiet ship but will be running at speed ahead of our fleet. While the Perry can carry a Sea Hawk helecopter, it wont be in this encounter. 2nd layer is Arleigh Burke, i believed the AB is a good ASW type of ship. But looking at her sonar stats she is not much different to the Perry class. Oh well. 3rd layer is Bunke…
