  1. Started by TonyE,

Game arrived yesterday after a pleasant e-Bay auction. This game is essentially a lite version of our beloved paper Harpoon game. The rules book is a whole 16 pages. You won't see a distance measurement in any unit other than hexes, no altitude bands, etc, just fighting! The included map covers roughly the GIUK gap. More details to come as I explore more.

I have a question regarding the deployment of the escorts in a CVBG especially during the Cold War days of the mid eighties, just at the time the AEGIS system was becoming operational. The way I understand it a carrier would be escorted with a few air defence cruisers and destroyers as well as ASW orientated ships like the Spruance class and frigates. Now, when a carrier turned into the wind and for example had to steam at 30 knots to conduct flight operations, how did that impact the escorts especially the ASW ships? Did they run at that speed too to keep up with the carrier and to maintain station? My understanding is that it has a negative impact on their primary missi…

Per PaulK and as always sounds well-founded and appropriate. "Here's the math on your problem: fuel factor of 3.53kg/nm 145kts/240=0.6nm Performance Effects Altitude effect = 2.5 (just my way of stating 1/.4) Throttle effect = 4 The "Performance Effects" are used to determine range equivalents (in terms of fuel expended) for aircraft that deviate from Clean loading, Cruise altitude and Cruise throttle setting parameters upon which the basic endurance numbers are based. Range equivalent of fuel used based on Altitude (and load) effect = 0.6 X 2.5 = 1.5nm Range equivalent of fuel used based on Throttle effect = 0.6 X 4 = 2.4nm What this says is…

Todays foul weather coupled with my 40 minute commute that took 2.5 hours gave me plenty of time to think about All Weather Attack Squadrons. What a capability to launch, seek out, and attack an enemy while they are beset by such aweful weather. Luckily I had my data annexes etc on the passenger seat so I was able to glance, while idle, at High Tide Annex B and its entry for the A-6E TRAM. Since I also mounted two 1/6000 A-6's on a single mount last night, I may need to give some more attention to a foul weather strike using the most glorious A-6 in my harpoon gaming. Since I'm still on this GCS kick as well, perhaps individual combat boxes (perscribed to be abou…

Got a few AARs going up now, and discussion. Any thoughts on tactics though? I've thrown a few planes into dog fights etc, rolled the dice, played out scenarios. But no real thought to tactics. Any ideas how tactics could come into play for any scenario?

  8. Started by kcdusk,

Hey guys I just bought myself H4.1, and i'm looking for an active forum. Is this the place to be? I have some rules questions ... And tactical type questions ... I'd also like to post some simple AAR, to get feedback on my rule interpretations and let people see what i'm up to.

Is the "accuracy bonus" discussed in 6.3.4.2.4 that a weapon, such as JDAM, is resolved on the Dive Bomb Table (Low or Medium depending upon the altitude it is launched)? Per DaveS (msg #3689) on the Admiralty Trilogy Yahoo Group: "If a GPS guided weapon is used against a nonmoving target it gets the bonus and you would use the Low or Medium altitude dive bombing tables as appropriate. If the target is moving and the weapon does not have terminal guidance, treat it as a dumb bomb (if it does have terminal guidance, treat it as a PGM)." Short answer: yes, the GPS accuracy bonus is resolving it on the respective dive bomb tables.

One of my favourite games used to be 2nd Fleet, due to its focus on the cold war / greenland-UK-iceland gap. And one of my favouite units froms that game was the "Ticonderoga". With that as my starting point, i set out to find an approximate Soviet equivalent to compare it too. I quickly found the Project 1164 Atlant. I'd never heard of it. The Atlant is same type of ship (CG) and it even has the same build year (1983). On paper, it looks to be the perfect match of NATA v Soviet guided missile cruisers. How do they stack up from a H4.1 point of view? Coming soon 1. Physically 2. Sensors 3. Weapons 4. Overall

  12. Hello For passive detection, as one does know only the direction, how to fix the enable point? If it is fixed too quickly or too far, the torpedo can turn in round, too far from its target.

** I posted this at Matrix, but I thought the more eyes the better. If someone can lead me to the right spot, I would be grateful. I am trying to put something together and I need some help. Somehow, I would like to come up with the produced numbers and versions of these items. I have read somewhere that 2000 of the first edition were produced. Was there another edition? This one I assume had higher production numbers. there were no add-ons to this I believe. There were 2 versions, a 1991 update, plus a whole lot of additions etc. This is the big one and I would like to know the numbers for all the addons also. Does …

  14. So, been reading, thinking about what I'll run first scenario wise, and mostly thinking how I'm going to do it so I can play on my computer, against human opponents, either pbem or live, with no human referee (albeit it should be possible to have one) First try will be a VASSAL module, as it already has live capabilities versus cyberboard that only does pbem (afaik). Now, it wouldn't include the rules, or automatic resolution of combat : the only automated part would be a fog of war to replace having a human referee plot everyone's moves. So as not to step on Uncle Harpoon's toes, et al. e.g you input your detection dice roll, the "ref" checks if you have anythi…

Does each missile of a "raid" need to be detected in order for it to be engaged? In this engagement I played it yes. 4x very small signature, sea skimming RGM-84D's fired at a detected Sovremenny Type 956EM Destroyer at a range of 60nm. Initially two were detected, by the Mineral-ME 3D radar, at a range of 9.0nm and engaged by both Yozh mounts in the 2nd fire phase of an Engagement Turn. I halved the ROF to 3 missiles each mount. I believe this to be wrong but wanted to give the Sovremennyy a fighters chance. In the very next Movement Phase the 6x Grizzlies engage and destroy the 2 detected Harpoons. Also 14 more, 7+7, Grizzlies launch from the Sovremenny…

Peter Grining (PG) was able to provide me with H4.1 compliant "3D" stats for the above radar set, but did not have any for "SS". Anybody have the Surface Search stats for a EL/M-2228 "Surveillance, Track And guidance Radar" set? This set was apparently installed on the Indian Navy's Type-16A Brahmaputra FF replacing the RAWS.03 when they also swapped out the failed, locally developed "Trihul" SAM for the Israeli Barak system. Thanks

  19. 2x Jaguar GR.1 with 8x Mk83 each are tasked with a strike on an observed ammunition dump located a couple hundred meters northwest of an intersection. Target area is defended by a battery of Bofor 40mm/L70 with a Fly Catcher FCR. The Jags started from their IP which is 10nm from the target, at 650kts and 300 feet or about 150m in the Low Altitude Ban. The aircraft speed and attack geometry had the Jags dropping their bombs prior to being engaged by the bofors battery. Lead completely missed and Dash2 got two hits for 80DP. An arbitrary DP total of 100 for the ammo dump left the attack causing .8 damage and a die roll of 4 provided for a critical hit status on the du…

First light. Light rain falling. An Argentinean DDG (Destroyer?) is sitting 3.0nm off the coast of the falklands. A Tornado (don't ask, just accept its there) is coming in at NOE (90m high) from over the land to attack her. The Tornado plans to approach to within 5.0nm and make a lob-toss attack using 2 Mk82 general purpose dumb bombs. My first task was to determine detection ranges for each. This ended up being interesting. The Tornado is flying at NOE (90m) and can detect the Hercules DDG (small target) at 16.0nm. However due to 4.2.5.2 land mass effects the range is halved to 8.0nm. 4.2.5.4 rain effects shows that light rain reduces Pd by 10% and a 25% …
