  1. Just full of depressing news today aren't you Brad . Oh well, the F-14 lives on in my heart and when I become rich and famous I'll buy one out of the boneyards and make it into a jungle gym or simulator. So long Tomcat.

Hi Pete, I can't see any math problems in what you've presented and errant decimal point in the table sounds like an astute observation. However, since I have no experience with the ground combat system or any of the background, I don't see a way to evaluate your results (or your math).
  3. Hmm, looks like I gave the Avro Arrow about half the range it should have, will be uploading a fixed version in the next few days.

  5. commondb.res holds platform characteristics, airplane names, speeds, ship info, etc. commondb.rsr holds plaform photos, animations, etc. However, commondb.res and commondb.rsr only apply to the four EC2003 battlesets and the WestPac battleset. When you import with pfBuild2002.mdb it extracts the information from commondb.res and puts it into whatever .mdb file pfBuild2002.mdb points to, by default pfData2002.mdb. Lots of questions there Users cannot create battlesets for HCCE, well, unless you were really really good at figuring out data structures and meanings. Suffice it to say Bret McKee made WestPac and that was the first battleset since EC2000 to be created. Now, as for that Alfa boat, again, commondb.res supplies the platforms for EC2003 and WestPac. Your changes to commondb.res will not affect the EC2000, HDS1,2,3, or original battlesets. There are no user tools for making changes to those earlier battlesets. The piece of linking information you may be looking for is that the platform database for EC2003 and WestPac (again commondb.res and commondb.rsr) is separate from the scenarios, battleset maps, etc. In the prior battlesets, the platform database is actually part of the battleset file. So GUIK.RES holds not only the scenarios and battleset description but also the platform information (database). GIUK.RSR contains not only the map graphics but the photos/drawings for the units in the GIUK battleset. When HCGold entered development there were discussions (sometimes heated) about somehow allowing changes to the platforms in the pre-EC2003 battlesets. The final consensus was that the effort would concentrate on going forward rather than bringing those change abilities into prior battlesets. This saved a tremendous amount of time and testing. What clinched the deal was the hope that users would step forward and recreate the previous battlesets' scenarios for the EC2003 battlesets, giving in the end much more flexibility. Sadly those efforts didn't go very far. Feel free to keep asking for more clarification if you don't understand what I'm trying to say . Also pressure AGSI to give your local HarpGamer admins the ability to continue HC development
  6. I've thrown together a program to allow you to edit some of the Text RES files from H2/3. It was mainly built to edit HARPTEXT.RES and CONTEXT.RES. It will also successfully edit any of the other RES files with TEXT in their name. At some point I may expand it to allow editing of the TUTORIAL.RES file and a couple of others. Grab the file at: http://www.harpgamer.com/utils/HGH3ResText_v.1.0.0.0.exe Let us know what doesn't work and what should work better. I understand it is rather basic...
  7. RIP Bo, my condolences to you and your family Pete. Labs truly are the hardest to lose...
  8. This time I'm not lying, server will be taken down in about 3.5 hours, so play now if you are looking for it . There will probably be something up in a couple of weeks.
  9. As you found, the H3 Access editor allows you to blank out a database, but I'll type it here for anyone who needs the answer in the future. Thanks for asking Jan.
  10. Stratsims LLC presents the CIC Warfare Plotter, a Windows tool that can aid your paper wargames. Originally developed to help develop rules for the upcoming Stratsims CIC sim, the program has value in H4 as well as a means to place units on the map, move the units according to their heading, speed, and time increment. Find more details, a demo, and purchase link at: http://www.stratsims.com/CIC_MP01.asp Stratsims is headed by five gentlemen from Harpoon Classic Gold's team, including the four founders of HarpGamer itself. We are striving to create a warfare game/sim that we've always wanted, incorporating many of the desires of those who assist us along the way. The CIC Warfare Plotter is just one step on the very long road to our ultimate goal. We look forward to hearing your input!
  11. I disagree that this is a bug. The SaveAs window shows the current save name, therefore the filter is to only show saved games with that exact name. It isn't the way you want it to work but I believe it works correctly. Still nice to have in this list in case someone decides to make that dialog more user-friendly.
  12. Wow, an unexpected twist! The intelligence system fails the SEALs
  13. Thanks for posting the results Fred. Fred was telling us on IRC that the incoming missiles were left with about a 10% PoK against the Eurofighters when all modifiers were taken into consideration, well protected birds!
  14. Great work on the AAR (not to mention playing the scen...). Keep 'em coming!
  15. Yes, I'm interested in a revived HUD and am certainly looking forward to helping host the updated files. All of my H3 database desires will soon be met with the renewed interest of late from a variety of sources.
  16. No that's the way we like to see it. Amen to that, an unqualified success on SC-7. Most of the kills ended up being gun kills, our Kriegsmarine brothers on the surface were somewhere close but I didn't see them come into action (received a radio report of friendly surface units nearby). Now if we can get Brains in on that action.
  17. Okay folks, this will almost certainly be the last weekend of the Stratsims server being available for your use. My old server is getting quite cranky so I need to put the new one into daily service instead of using it to host H3 games So play often this weekend. We will still offer the chat services at HarpGamer and once I'm transitioned to the new server we may host a H3 ANW server on the old hardware. It's been fun!
  18. The difference between possible and doable with a reasonable amount of labor is a key distinction here. Possible: scraping units from a DB and dumping them into yours. The trouble is you have to renumber the IDs to be consecutive and as you do that, adjust any related records to point to the proper IDs. To make this happen you'll have to write nice queries and such in Access or your programming/scripting environment of choice. More plausible: Take one of the existing databases with the permission of the author(s) and work from that rather than from the blank database. Rene Haar took this approach for EuroDB, started with a copy of HCDB and marked most of the installations for re-use (but be loathe to delete entries lest you end up with a gap in ID numbers).

What can we say, we were out of conventional ammunition after devastating a nice, lightly escorted convoy...
  20. The quoted requests have been implemented, at least as a first version. I cannot wait to try out the Valkyrie (need some opponents in the DB though...).

  22. Taitennak, CV32, and myself just got back from ODAX 2004 by François Guérin for DB2k. CV32 commanded the French Air Force. Taitennak has the Navy, and I had the other guys. My approach was to do some gaining of air superiority with my Mirage 2000C craft. CV32 showed me in short order that the odds were not in my favor, as I was losing about 3 aircraft for each one of his I shot down. Undaunted I sent out my early strikes after 30 minutes or so and got some nice hits in the South of France. However, CV32 downed a whole strike force since I didn't have any AAW assets to cover the strikers on return to base. Luckily Taitennakshowed up with his dandy Rafales and saved my second strike group. Taitennak had some successful coastal strikes and continued wiping the skies with his Rafales while I huddled in a corner and lured what battles I could into advantageous positions. A couple of hours into the game I found myself with only a couple AAW Mirage 2000s left alive (they were re-arming) but a number of strikers. I sent them up North and in combination with Taitennak's Rafales had some success in downing more of Brad's craft. Before my large strike arrived up North, CV32 called an end of game, having no more tenable defense. This was another fun scenario, three players was certainly more enjoyable than two, so head on over to HarpGamer IRC and see if anyone is up for a battle (there hasn't been much traffic...).
  23. Brad Leyte and I faced off on the Stratsims server just now. The scenario was AEGEAN by Stephen Mills using DB2k, H3 3.7.0.0 I commanded the Greeks while Brad drove the Turkish ships. The scenario opened to confined waters and some fast patrol groups. Anxiously I searched for aircraft to find none! Ouch, without my E-2C I'm a sitting duck. My strategy was to scoot around with two of my groups emitting and my other two groups silent. Brad's strategy was to blend with the merchants and pick me off solely based on the speed of my units. Based on the strategies the conclusion should be obvious, Brad killed 7 of my ships while I killed only three of his. Victory was granted to Brad, six sunken enemy ships was his goal. Some misguided Exocents that I fired killed a merhant, they weren't even BOL or aimed in the direction of the merchant, oh well. The Nav bug hit both Brad and I but it hit Brad much harder, I was using manual plots that didn't trigger any craziness. In the end this was very enjoyable, I was worried at the outset it would be a fruitless search.
  24. Under the guise of Stratsims I'm able to leave a dedicated server up and running for a while. IP: 72.21.228.42 Port: 14343 - PDB aka Players Database The server has been stable since I turned MPLogging off in the harpoon3.ini file. Occasionally the clients come unsynched and the clients crash but the server piece itself has been pretty stable. Click image to enter chat. The above image indicates whether there are any people at HarpGamer ready and willing to undertake an Multiplayer mission. The games need not take place on the Stratsims server, this can function as a general meeting place to set up MP games, and requires only a fairly recent web browser. Refreshing this page will in most cases indicate the current chat status. Is what you will see if there are players chatting Is what you will see when no players are chatting Either way head over when you want to play! If the server does appear to crash, chase me down at #harpgamer on the NewNetIRC network or e-mail me at sysop@tgp.net. There is a link to Java IRC client at HarpGamer If you want to see scenarios added/removed/swapped out please e-mail me the scenarios in a single zip file to sysop@tgp.net and I'll make the changes. The connection isn't super fast, T-1 so if you all show up at once there could be issues. I'll leave the server up as long as cooling capacity and my interest holds out or I actually put the server into its planned service.
  25. Title: BBGN AK vs. CVN NC - StkIOPG1.SCp Battleset: EC2003 IOPG Author: Tony Eischens This scenario pits Kilonum's BBGN Alaska monstrosity with JSF against Ed Ladner's CVN North Carolina also with JSF. A small scenario with scores of missiles to fire. Scenario requires HCStrikerFictDB-060703 or newer. Find both Scenario and DB at http://www.harpgamer.com
