Airborne Infra-Red Search & Track (IRST)
True, also if radar jamming is really making for a hard day, IRST is an alternative. Not to mention some of the capabilities the IRST will provide for determining if that glint thru the windscreen is a friendly fighter or enemy fighter. Definitely a multi-faceted tool.

War in the Pacific 1941-1945
Kelly, your sinkings report really emphasizes the torpedo... Is it lying or should a person just be making a lot of torpedo bombers and fighters for the carrier attack role?

4 players needed
Jon, The scenario file is just a text file, you might find it easier to delete the 'hidden' units using notepad (with word wrap turned off). Delete the entire lines for the units that need to be deleted. The side benefit is undo . Plus, if you have the time, post up your suggestions to the Yahoo group for the plotter and we'll see what can be added.

Naval Gazing: A Top Gun Fantasy Comes True
I certainly picked out that bit of heresy and I wasn't even reading closely! Among other fine pieces of work, I think the book "Grumman F-14 Tomcat: Bye - Bye Baby...!: Images & Reminiscences From 35 Years of Active Service" which I have of course (they made it as not sad as possible) will repudiate especially the aviators wanting to be rid of the Turkey. The maintenance people sure, but the fly boys, no way!

On the upcoming HCE release
Cross posted from Matrix Games in response to a question asking about the difference between HC and H3 Matrix is a new start of sorts for Harpoon and vague answers to your question Rob may be frustrating but one of the few things the various factions of Harpoon have generally agreed upon is no trashing either of the games in a comparison in public forums. HC (Harpoon Classic/HCE) folks are plenty capable of trashing H3 (Harpoon 3/ANW) and vice versa. It has been done, it has ruined gaming relationships, and has made everyone look bad. Oh, and did I mention AGSI doesn't much appreciate it either! AGSI positions H3 as more hard core and HC as a lighter game, imho that is mainly marketing and product positioning and has little to do with the games themselves. A stock answer is that each game has its place, they each do certain things better, H3 excels at small engagements, HC will deal with larger engagements better (broad generalization...). The list goes on and on as you can well imagine. As for the approach to making the games, H3 is the star child with paid staff (with a ton of volunteer help, testing, etc.), professional coders (Darrel Dearing for instance who you will find in the credits of almost every Harpoon computer game). H3 has the direct feed from the paper rules guys. So H3 has the clout, the future, and the need to fund development. HC since 2003 was meant to be an end of life product, finish up the additon of the WestPac battleset (which has been around since 2003 but never in a non-beta release of the game), release the game and a bug patch or two and put it out to pasture in the history of naval simulations. Thanks in part to Matrix showing some interest to Bond, Carlson, Gilman for continued development of HC after the HCE release, and in part to a few of us regularly sending Don Gilman (AGSI) proposals to keep working at the game, HC development will continue after the HCE release. We're working for free or for a bit of royalties, time will tell, but nothing monetarily worth the investment of time and effort. Anyway, the way forward once HCE releases is I'll get access to the source code again and will transition to being the primary programmer (how long that takes depends upon how active Fletcher wants to remain in coding), CV32 (author of HCDB) will handle support along with a fellow who goes by the username Akula (he has done a lot of the platform photo work with us and writes some nasty good scenarios too). H3 -> TNH (The Next Harpoon) is and will be AGSI's focus. HC should pretty much be left to the three of us as a steering comittee of sorts. We'll have almost zero resources next to H3 but we'll also have a measure of agility and lightness H3 does not. The three of us are in it for the game, not the almighty dollar. My approach will be an open one, there are bugs, there will be bugs, but the bugs will not be brushed under the rug. That also doesn't mean every bug and every unexpected behavior will be modified, but you will be welcome to speak your mind and interact directly with those of us who have more control over what does and doesn't happen in terms of changes, additions, etc. to the game. Yes, I'm excited for HCE, I'm extremely excited for the changes and enhancements to the game that will occur after release and hope that we are allowed to continue development for many more years! TNH had better be great but we're out to do everything we can (outside of real life and work ) for HC until that ideal Harpoon computer game materializes. _____________________________ Sincerely, Tony Eischens HarpGamer.com Co-Owner StratSims Lead Programmer

H3DB was headed up by Fred, I'm just the guy who moved the file over from the old website . Let's hope Fred makes a return for HUD3!

Rail guns, EM guns, etc.
For some background on my level of interest, my first railgun was built in 4th (or 3rd?) grade, oh 1988 for my Cricket in Times Square presentation. It was a mouse cutout attached to a paperclip accelerated thru a paper towel tube. Wish I had a photo to post up, it was a fun project.

Rail guns, EM guns, etc.
Just received my copy of IEEE Spectrum in the mail today and see that there is a fairly long article essentially chronicalling EM guns and recapping the current state of affairs. "One day in 1977, researchers at Australian National University were putting the finishing touches on an experiment that they hoped would cap nearly a decade’s worth of groundbreaking research on electromagnetic guns. Tantalized by the prospect of unleashing the pure power of electromagnetism to accelerate projectiles at rates never before achieved, countless researchers had been pursuing the technology since the turn of the century. But without much success." http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/jul07/5296 for the entire article

Pentagon shreds F-14s to keep parts from enemies
Let's see, $100k for a fence, $50k for rent a cop (figure he has overhead of accounting staff paying and such), that gets you 16 years of protection for the same cost as shredding them (if the shredding cost isn't vastly understated). Good idea Pete

I weep, Iran has won already, has anyone else without firing a shot destroyed hundreds of aircraft that could be needed in an all out war...?

War in the Pacific 1941-1945
Keep 'em coming Kelly! What little WitP I have played made me really like it, since I don't take time to play enough games, living it thru your experience is entertaining and informative (doesn't beat the banter between you and Dewayne on IRC though...).

TacOps Battle - Basic Training US
Cracked open the PDF manual this evening to learn what the different items in the Unit Orders Window are, took the training scenario for a few more tries while learning the commands. Surprisingly my attempts at the scenario tonight ended more poorly for me than that first try when I had little clue what I was doing. My third try tonight was starting to look better but the time ran out before I had eliminated the red threat. Yes, I understand the facing icon now to orient the units to the threat. I look forward to trying a different battle towards the end of the week, then chasing Pete down for a beating!
