My tenth HUD-4 scenario of the year... This is a straightforward Cold War submarine duel...it is 1983, in the early days of World War III, and a squadron of American submarines must find and destroy a squadron of Soviet ballistic missile submarines before they can escape into the Atlantic Ocean. 8. I'm thinking that apart from books (mostly fiction) alike, detailed accounts of sub vs sub action are hard to come by. Do the Navy's manuals ever become de-classified? One source I found that was very helpful are the Newport Papers, published by the Naval War College... https://www.usnwc.edu/Publications/Naval-War-College-Press/Newport-Papers.aspx Of particular interest are two volumes dealing with the Global War Game (vol 4 & vol 20). Also the book on naval strategy in the 1980s (vol. 33). These provides a fairly detailed explanation of how World War III might have been fought at sea in the 1980s.

I'm pleased to see that a number of people are downloading my scenarios. I would be grateful if people who are trying them out would take a few minutes to provide feedback on them, too, either in the form of star ratings in the downloads section, or comments in one of the scenario discussion threads, or issue reports if there are any problems that have to be corrected, or full After Action Reports. The more I hear back from people, the more I can do to revise existing scenarios and to make any future scenarios better. Thanks! I look forward to your comments.

Let me add that, despite my own personal annoyance with some of the people connected with the Players Database, I'm not trying to tell people not to use it if it is what they like. It is out there, and there are many scenarios written for it, and it works well for some people. The HUD-4 is another option and I hope people will try it out and see if it works for them, too. In fact, there is no need to choose; it is very easy to switch between databases in ANW so there is no reason not to use as many databases as one likes. In the end, I support the HUD-4 simply out of personal preference, partly just because I like the way it "feels" and partly because it seems to be the most stable database on my computer and partly because Darren was my friend and Gunny is my friend and I want to do what I can to see their efforts successful and appreciated. So it's what I use to write scenarios.
  11. Mgellis replied to Mgellis's topic in General
Actually, it was Gunny's decision. I'm not the database editor; I just write scenarios. It's not my fault! More seriously, I know that some people are annoyed about not being able to edit the HUD-4 themselves, but Gunny was very concerned about the possibility of theft of intellectual property and also about the problems created when you've got "too many cooks in the kitchen." I do not know enough about database editing or about the actual intentions of other people in the Harpoon community to know if he is more concerned than he needs to be, but it is his database. If you are really interested in helping edit the HUD-4, please contact Gunny privately; he may just give you the password.

I'm sorry to hear you are getting so many crashes--this probably varies from computer to computer, but I have found the updated ANW 3.11 to be more stable than 3.6. I have fewer problems with it. In fact, it is really quite rare for me to have a game crash at all. The upgrade to 3.11 is free, so you may want to try it someday and see if that makes a difference.
  13. From what I have read about this, the whole thing is pretty sad. It sounds like the guy saw some really questionable things. But then he was incredibly stupid and irresponsible about his "whistle-blowing." It sounds like at least some of this information is classified. And the article says "hundreds of thousands" of documents. Did he review every single one? How does he know some of this information couldn't be used to help terrorists, etc.? It does raise the question...what can you do if you are part of the military and you think you have witnessed a crime, or even widespread corruption, and you do not think you can trust your own commanding officer? Who do you go to? I wonder what would have happened if he had e-mailed all of these documents not to Wikileaks but to the members of Congress who are on the Armed Services Committee...
  14. BAC TSR-2 [#]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TSR-2 http://www.ausairpower.net/Profile-BAC-TSR.2.html "The British Aircraft Corporation TSR-2 was a cancelled Cold War strike and reconnaissance aircraft developed by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) for the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The TSR-2 was designed to penetrate a well-defended forward battle area at low altitudes and very high speeds, and then attack high-value targets in the rear with nuclear or conventional weapons. Another aspect of its combat role was to provide high-altitude, high-speed photo reconnaissance, requirements that necessitated incorporating "state-of-the-art" aviation technology that would make it the highest-performing aircraft in these roles. Only one airframe flew and test flights and weight rise during design indicated that the aircraft would be unable[1] to meet its original stringent[2] design specifications.[3][4][5][N 1] The design specifications had been reduced as the results of flight testing became available.[6] The TSR-2 was the victim of ever rising costs[7] and inter-service squabbling[8] over Britain's future defence needs, which led to the controversial decision to scrap the programme in 1965. With the election of a new government, the TSR-2 was cancelled due to rising costs, in favour of purchasing the General Dynamics F-111, an "off-the-shelf" decision that itself was later rescinded as costs and development times skyrocketed.[9] The replacements included the Blackburn Buccaneer and McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, both types being previously considered and rejected early in the TSR-2 procurement process. Eventually, the smaller swing-wing Panavia Tornado was developed and adopted by a European consortium to fulfill broadly similar requirements to the TSR-2." --Wikipedia Another "what if" aircraft. She probably would have still been flying in the 1980s, maybe even the 1990s, especially if she was comparable to the F-111. ANW HUD-4 v1.11

My ninth H3/ANW HUD-4 scenario of the year... In the near future, tensions have increased between Greece and Albania. Greek ships must escort a convoy to Dubrovnik. (This is not a very difficult scenario to win, although you have to keep an eye open for the bad guys--you can lose easily enough if you get careless--and there are a lot of innocent bystanders in the area. Again, it might be a good scenario for HC players who want to give H3 a try.) The project was started in the late 1980s by the PZL (Polish State Aviation Works) and cancelled in 1994 due to a lack of funds. Skorpion would have had twin jet engines, a fuselage afterbody blending into the wing and small canards behind the cockpit." --Wikipedia Another plane that never was, but...what if...??? 18. British Aerospace 146 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bae_146 "The British Aerospace 146 (also BAe 146) is a regional airliner that was manufactured in the United Kingdom by British Aerospace, later part of BAE Systems. A "gravel kit" can be fitted to aircraft to enable operations from rough, unprepared airstrips." --Wikipedia Widely used by various air forces as a transport. ANW HUD-4 v1.11
  19. I noticed that the CASA C-212 Aviocar is primarily a transport, capable of carrying two squads (more or less) of paratroopers (i.e., two generic squads). Should this loadout be added to the existing platform (the maritime patrol variant) or should the transport version get its own separate listing in the HUD-4? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-212 ANW HUD-4 v1.11
  20. Aero Commander 500/680/690 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aero_Commander_500 "The Aero Commander 500 family is a series of light-twin piston-engined and turboprop aircraft originally built by the Aero Design and Engineering Company in the late 1940s, renamed the Aero Commander company in 1950, and a division of Rockwell International from 1965. The initial production version was the Aero Commander 520. Piston-engined versions manufactured after 1967 are known as the Shrike Commander.[1] Many different models based on the same airframe were developed to satisfy market demand, such as the turboprop range with the Grand Renaissance Commander 1000, ostensibly, at the top of the line." --Wikipedia I noticed this when I was working on a scenario with Colombia. Hundreds of these were built, and many used for liaison, light transport, and reconnaissance (the role where they will probably be of most use in Harpoon, for smaller countries that do not have anything better). 21. I saw this on Youtube and thought it was cute... The song, "Virgin's High" is the theme to anime called Sky Girls, so it seems appropriate that someone used it as the soundtrack for images of the Japanese Air Force. Sky Girls actually contains some pretty good flying scenes, although some of the tactics employed against the giant tentacled horrors are rather bizarre. What is not bizarre is that, when monsters attack, and exotic technology is Earth's only hope, it is completely reasonable to have the priceless prototypes armed and piloted by Japanese schoolgirls. Everyone knows that's just common sense! Here's the actual opening of the anime, in case anyone cares... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5S8PDguFpg I'm guessing these won't get added to the HUD-4, either...
  22. Just curious... When is the next update? Any other news regarding the HUD-4? Thanks.

My eighth H3 ANW HUD-4 scenario of the year... It is 1983 and the world is at war. A German task force must eliminate Soviet submarines in the North Sea. (This is a fairly simple scenario, but it turned out to be pretty challenging, I think. Because it is only four ships hunting a small group of submarines, with support from a couple of British Nimrods, it might be a good introductory scenario for people who have played Harpoon Classic but who want to try out H3.)
