  1. File Name: Lutjens and the Ladies (1983) File Submitter: Mgellis File Submitted: 18 Mar 2013 File Category: Scenarios My eighth H3 ANW HUD-4 scenario of the year... It is 1983 and the world is at war. A German task force must eliminate Soviet submarines in the North Sea. (This is a fairly simple scenario, but it turned out to be pretty challenging, I think. Because it is only four ships hunting a small group of submarines, with support from a couple of British Nimrods, it might be a good introductory scenario for people who have played Harpoon Classic but who want to try out H3.) 2. Things I can do right now (i.e., until the new SE is written, assuming it happens someday)... * I will try my hand at AARs for HC. I may not be able to write new scenarios for HC right now, but I can play the ones other people have written and tell you what I think. * If anyone wants to take any of my ANW/HUD-4 scenarios and write an HC version of them, please go ahead. The only thing I ask is that I get a mention as the original author and that you also say something nice about ANW and the HUD-4. Like suggesting that people try the ANW version of the scenario, too. * In fact, if anyone would like me to write scenarios for ANW/HUD-4 that are designed with conversion to HC in mind (i.e., the maps, the platforms being used, etc. are selected with ease of conversion to HC in mind), I can do that...in fact, I am happy to consider requests for specific scenarios. Anyway, please count me in...I've got a lot on my plate right now, so I'm not sure how much I can contribute, but I'm happy do what I can to help keep HC alive and well.
  3. While this would be a big project (and not one I would be able to do), may I recommend the following... New version of the scenario editor that can run under 64-bit systems I understand it would probably be easier to create a new SE than rebuild the existing one. While there are workarounds for the current scenario editor (use Windows Pro, etc.), I think as more and more people upgrade their computers every few years, it would be a smart move to have a new version of the scenario editor that people can use "out of the box." Mark (Heck, you get me a scenario editor that works on my machine and I will give you two new HC scenarios every month for a year. That should keep people busy.)
  4. I finally got a chance to try this one out. Here is my AAR... Pacific War 2 – Intruders Scenario by JSF/Ralf AAR by Mark Gellis I must guard the Japanese “carrier” Hyuga from Chinese submarines. The scenario begins at 13:00 Zulu, 15 August, 2013. 13:04. In the first four minutes, four submarines have appeared near my task force. I am going to try to move my task force away (to the east and then the north) to put some distance between myself and then. I am also launching a Seahawk-J to see if I can get more information. 13.06. A fifth sub spotted. How did they all get this close!? 13.07. Torpedo contact! 13:10. A Chinese plane has appeared, a Yun-8X, but it got too close and a Sea Sparrow took it down. 13:12. Contact G103 is a biological. So is contact G102 and G108. Two other contacts are submarines, identified as Chinese Kilos. I’m sending helicopters, changing course (north by northwest) and going to flank speed. 13:21. There is Han right ahead of me. There’s got to be nearly ten subs and/or whales in the water around me! Changing course again and launching another helicopter. 13:28. I’m getting some information on another submarine…it is an American Seawolf and it is firing on…well, I hope it’s not me. 13:55. Launching my last two helicopters. The rest are out of torpedoes and must reload. I’m not sure if I got any of the Chinese submarines yet but none of their torpedoes have gotten me so at least I’m not losing. Yet. 14:07. Changing course again. Now heading east once more, staying in the assigned patrol zone. (I think that’s what it is…it is marked with reference points.) 14:25. Got one of the Kilos. I may have gotten both…the other one has disappeared. 14:36. Something got hit. I don’t know what. But I heard the explosion. Lining up one of the Hans between two choppers…I’ll pinch him between two torpedoes. 14:43. Launching torpedoes at the Han. 14:45. The Han took a hit but is still “visible” on sonar. Is he sinking? 15:16. I’m getting torpedo contacts but they don’t seem anywhere near me. 15:26. Launching another helicopter to see if I can kill the other Han. 15:32. Victory conditions achieved. It says four Chinese subs got whacked (I think I got two of them. It also says a Russian submarine got killed and two whales. Poor whales! The Russian Sub and the Seawolf may have gotten the other Chinese subs.) Overall assessment: This is a nice, tense little scenario. The biggest change I would make would be to modify the orders so it is clear that you’re supposed to stay in the patrol zone (if you are, in fact, supposed to do that). I would not bother adding a “stay on station” victory condition; I think as long as the carrier survives and enough Chinese subs are killed, by the Japanese or their allies or anyone else, it can be considered a victory.

My reason for suggesting so many civil aircraft, by the way, is simply to add greater realism (and greater "noise") to scenarios. Different airliners fly at different speeds, have different ranges, etc., and putting various bits of air traffic into scenarios is one way of making them more challenging...you can't just shoot down anything that does not belong to you because you do not always know it is a bad guy. In addition, a lot of these are also used by various military forces as cargo planes, transports, etc. In any event, I'm trying to find the 20 or so most common civil platforms that it might make sense to add. I've probably posted about half of them already. ANW HUD-4 v1.11

  21. ARTY M270 MRLS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M270_Multiple_Launch_Rocket_System "The M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (M270 MLRS) is an armored, self-propelled, multiple rocket launcher; a type of rocket artillery. Some 1,300 M270 systems have been manufactured in the United States and in Europe, along with more than 700,000 rockets. The production of the M270 ended in 2003, when a last batch was delivered to the Egyptian army." --Wikipedia Another widely produced and widely distributed MLRS system. A six-vehicle battery would have RoF (I'm assuming this is rounds per second, by the way) of 1, a capacity of 72, and DP 12 per rocket (they're pretty big rockets). The range on the rockets varies (there are several types) from about 20 miles to 40 miles. Apparently, it can fire ballistic missiles (MGM-140 ATACMS) out to 300 km. It carries 12 rockets or 2 missiles. I'm not sure how this would be modeled...maybe it would be better to have two platforms, one with 12 rockets per vehicle and one with 2 missiles? ANW HUD 4 v1.11
  22. Mgellis replied to Mgellis's topic in Requests/Issues
Ack! I made a mistake with the warheads...I was counting a six-piece battery as a single warhead. The damage from the BM-21 Grad is probably more like 5 DP per warhead (it's actually a bit smaller than a 155-mm. warhead). I'm not sure if it is better and/or more realistic to reduce the RoF and put the damage at 30, like the 105-mm. howitzers (assuming a coordinated blast from several rockets), or keep the RoF high to model lots of individual rockets, each one doing only 5 points of damage. In any event, regardless, I would not want to get hit with 240 of these things!
  23. ARTY BM-27 Uragan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BM-27_Uragan "The BM-27 Uragan (Russian: Ураган, 'hurricane'; GRAU index 9P140) is a self-propelled multiple rocket launcher system designed in the Soviet Union. It began its service with the Soviet Army in the late 1970s, as its first modern spin and fin stabilized heavy multiple rocket launcher. This system is capable of launching 220 mm rockets from 16 launch tubes mounted on the rear of a ZIL-135 8x8 chassis. This vehicle is extremely similar to that used in the FROG-7 free flight rocket system....The BM-27 can use HE-Frag, chemical, or scatterable mine (PTM-3 or PFM-1) submunition equipped rockets all of which are detonated by electric timing fuses. Each rocket weighs 280.4 kilograms. The warheads weigh between 90 and 100 kilograms depending on type. A full salvo of 16 rockets can be fired in 20 seconds and can engage targets within a range of 35 kilometers." --Wikipedia I'm guessing we're talking about an RoF of 6 and a capacity of 96, assuming a battery of six MRLS systems, with each warhead doing something like 12 damage points. (Again, I made a mistake with the Grad because I based the damage on a six-tube barrage from 155 artillery, not a single shell.) Another widely produced and distributed MRLS, with something like a thousand of them built during the Cold War. ANW HUD-4 v1.11
  24. Just a thought... I've noticed that with many of the entries in the HUD-4, if you click the picture button, you get a "media not found" response. Should Gunny consider using public domain images from the Wikipedia Commons to add images to the HUD-4? There are a huge number of these images, many of them created by the US government and therefore in the public domain, and many others covered under a Creative Commons license. I'm not sure what's involved in doing this or if there are any restrictions on these images (Gunny does not make money from the database as far as I know, but if it is included with Harpoon, which is sold for a profit, does that create any issues?) Obviously, this is not a high priority, but it would be nice. People like pictures.
