Mgellis Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 I don't want to be someone who talks big and then does nothing. This is my attempt to do something to make the HUD-4 as good and as popular as it can be... If at least three other people will do it, too, I pledge to create at least one new Harpoon ANW scenario every month for the next twelve months, using the HUD-4 database. I also pledge to post at least one AAR on a scenario created by some other author every month. If we can get just four people to regularly write new scenarios with the HUD-4, in a year we will have about fifty. If we can get eight people to do it, in a year, we will have about one hundred of them. And with that many AARs being posted, and maybe more, we will have a lot more people reading these forums, I think. As time allows, I will do what I can to help other scenario writers with brainstorming, fact finding, playtesting, etc. Who is with me? Who else will take this pledge? Quote
Mgellis Posted July 28, 2012 Author Report Posted July 28, 2012 [Listens to the crickets chirping...] Anyone? Hello? Seriously, people, one scenario a month is not a lot. They don't have to be big scenarios. You can have a lot of fun with half-a-dozen ships and a couple of dozen aircraft trying to kill each other while trying to not kill the occasional hapless civilian, who apparently does not have the common sense that God gave a cabbage because he's wandering around in a freakin' war zone... And to anyone who is new to Harpoon who has simply been reading the forums and not posting anything, please consider yourselves welcome, too. It really is not hard to write scenarios. There is a bit of a learning curve, but, trust me, if I can do it, anyone can. Quote
gemerson Posted July 29, 2012 Report Posted July 29, 2012 I'll take it, for the HUCE side of the forum! Quote
Mgellis Posted July 29, 2012 Author Report Posted July 29, 2012 I'll take it, for the HUCE side of the forum! Thank you, gemerson! I look forward to seeing your ANW scenarios. If you want to brainstorm about ideas, please feel free to contact me, either here or via e-mail at mgellis2@yahoo.com. Right now, I'm finishing up a small scenario, one of my "fish war" ones. Basic concept: Myanmar has been violating Thai waters; Thailand has already seized a couple of fishing boats so this time Myanmar has sent warships to escort them. Thai forces have been ordered to seize (or, if they flee, sink) the fishing boats now in their waters. Both sides have warships and both sides have fairly impressive aircraft to provide surveillance and/or air cover, if need be. Victory conditions include not only sinking four trawlers (one assumes they run...H3 does not seem to be able model "warning shots" yet as far as I know) but also NOT losing any of your own ships or more than three aircraft. One thing I've realized is that one way to make a scenario challenging is to insist on limited losses. It is not hard for the U.S. or France or China or some other large country to invade or attack a small one, but invading or attacking a small one AND taking relatively low losses requires one to employ tactics, manage resources, etc. The nice thing about this "template" is how many scenarios you can build with it. You can use the same "plot" over and over, but come up with totally different scenarios. Change the Thai and Burmese ships and/or aircraft and you have a different scenario. Change the nations involved and you have a different scenario. There are hundreds of possible variations; I will never get through all of them. So who else is in? Mark Quote
JSF Posted July 29, 2012 Report Posted July 29, 2012 Well, maybe I was not clear enough. What I wanted to say is... +1 So you already have two others and only need one more. Quote
Mgellis Posted September 8, 2012 Author Report Posted September 8, 2012 Okay, I have just posted #6, so I'm halfway to my goal. It's time for OTHER people to start posting HUD-4 scenarios, too... Quote
Mgellis Posted October 6, 2012 Author Report Posted October 6, 2012 I was curious about whether the Pledge scenarios are turning out okay or not. I hope people are enjoying them. Anyone want to post an AAR or two? Quote
JSF Posted October 7, 2012 Report Posted October 7, 2012 Mark, I´m still around and just downloaded your latest scenarios. Yes, I´m going to test them and to write AARs. I even write the scenarios I promised - just need time due to RL issues. Quote
Mgellis Posted October 7, 2012 Author Report Posted October 7, 2012 Mark, I´m still around and just downloaded your latest scenarios. Yes, I´m going to test them and to write AARs. I even write the scenarios I promised - just need time due to RL issues. Sounds good. I look forward to playing the scenarios and reading the AARs. I hope we can get more people involved, too. I wonder if Brad, Tony, or any of the others who have been working on HC scenarios recently would consider writing up H3/ANW versions of them, too? That might stimulate more interest in H3/ANW and the HUD-4 database, especially because people could play both versions, compare the experiences, etc. Quote
TonyE Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 I wonder if Brad, Tony, or any of the others who have been working on HC scenarios recently would consider writing up H3/ANW versions of them, too? While Tony might love to do such a thing, he's way overbooked as it is. You'll notice the upgraded HG site hasn't been themed yet, our portal is gone, the Issue Tracker isn't back in operation, and HC itself has about 10 years of pending fixes and enhancements . We'll continue to support the ANW and HUD-4 effort by providing this site and doing any of those quick fixes that everyone requires (such as the modification of the database editor when Gunny got a 64-bit version of Office a while back). Thank you again Mark for jumping in and making the Pledge happen! Quote
CV32 Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 I have zero interest in writing scenarios for H3/ANW, sorry, and considering how little time I can find generally for HCE work, this is probably a good thing! Thankfully the H3/ANW side of the coin has folks like you (Mark), Francois and Ralf to keep it alive. Quote
Gunny Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 Thanks for your kind words Brad, makes heart warm... FG PS: Mark, even though I keep focus on HUD4 maintaining, I've also started to write some scens. Not yet fully satisfied with the results, I'll post it over here in a near future Quote
JSF Posted October 9, 2012 Report Posted October 9, 2012 Good news, Gunny. I hope I´ll deliver first and fulfill my own pledge. Was totally drowned in RL but haven´t forgotten about this task. Quote
Mgellis Posted October 31, 2012 Author Report Posted October 31, 2012 Well, I've got my twelve up. The way I figure it, you guys owe me 36 HUD-4 scenarios. Get to work! Quote
