My 18th scenario of 2013... In the near future, tensions between Iran and Kuwait have increased. Kuwait sends a few of its vessels to "show the flag" by patrolling the Eastern part of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). But will Iran consider this a provocation and use it as an excuse to attack? Image: Kuwaiti patrol vessel Al-Garoh. (Source: U.S. Navy photo by Photographer’s Mate 1st Class Kevin H. Tierney.) (Author's note: I found this one surprisingly challenging when I was testing it, perhaps because it is one of those small scenarios where every asset counts and a couple of mistakes early on can make it very hard to complete your mission.) -

DW-3000H Frigate
DW-3000H Frigate http://defense-studies.blogspot.com/2013/04/south-korea-has-chosen-to-build-thai.html http://www.defensemedianetwork.com/stories/south-korea%E2%80%99s-dsme-unveils-new-frigate-proposal-for-thai-navy/ http://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/south-korea-to-build-frigates-for-thailand.256789/ A new frigate class being built by South Korea. It appears they may use some themselves, and they seem to have signed a contract to build two for Thailand; I believe the class is being considered by the Philippines, too. Certainly, it would make a good "generic export warship" that might be purchased by a number of nations around the world. ANW HUD-4 v1.11

Aron littoral combat WIG Craft (aka Aron M50) http://asitimes.blogspot.com/2013/04/indonesian-navy-and-coast-guard-may.html <-- general technical data (speed, range, etc.) http://www.defence.pk/forums/china-far-east/229571-indonesia-military-news-discussion-thread-16.html <-- scroll down for technical specs on several different variants (will they each need their own database listing?) KAAN 29-class patrol craft
KAAN 29-class patrol craft http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KAAN_29_CLASS http://turkishnavy.net/kaan-29-class/ "Kaan 29 class fast patrol craft are boats built by Yonca-Onuk shipyard in Istanbul. The first boat of its class - hull number TCSG-101 - was commissioned in 2001 and since then nine boats (Hull numbers TCSG-101 to TCSG-109) have been built. The last boat, TCSG-109, was delivered to the Turkish Coast Guard in April 2004. The boat owes its high-speed to its high-engine output, deep-V hull design and reduced weight thanks to its advanced composite hull. Originally designed to reach speeds up to 60 knots, the boats are fitted with two MTU 16V4000 series engines out putting 2720 kW of max power each at 2160 rpm and were capable of speeds up to 48 kts. However, they were later fitted with two interceptors for trim control, which limited their maximum speed at 45 kts. The MTU diesels are paired with waterjet propulsion system by MJP, which make the boats very maneuverable. The project was shelved in 2003, with the KAAN-33 Class Patrol boats, which were more sea-going and offered more space for the crew, storage and instruments. These boats have also been built for the Pakistan Coast Guard." --Wikipedia Turkish and Pakistani coast guard vessel. USCG Juniper-class seagoing buoy tender
USCG Juniper-class seagoing buoy tender http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USCG_seagoing_buoy_tender http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USCGC_Juniper_%28WLB-201%29 http://www.uscg.mil/d14/cgckukui/Documents/newsletter_winter2013.pdf "Two classes of the WLB cutters have been produced. The older class, the 180 ft-class cutters, were 180 feet (55 m) long. Thirty-nine of these vessels were built from 1942–1944. All but one were constructed in the shipyards of Duluth, Minnesota. The 180 fleet, many of which served for more than 50 years, all went through different mid-life modifications that essentially resulted in three different classes of ship. All of the 180s are now retired and have been replaced with the new 225-foot (69 m) Juniper-class cutters. The last 180-foot cutter, USCGC Acacia, was decommissioned on 7 June 2006. The Jonquil class of 189-foot (58 m) buoy tenders were US Army built mine planters acquired by the Coast Guard after World War II. Built around 1942, these vessels were designed for diesel engines but low pressure steam plants were installed instead." --Wikipedia "The new Juniper buoy tenders are designed and operated as multi-mission platforms. While the 180s also performed other Coast Guard missions, they lacked the speed, communications, navigation and maneuverability of the new Junipers. Today, the Junipers conduct almost as much law enforcement as aid to navigation work; they are also outfitted to handle oil spill recovery, search and rescue, homeland security, and some ice breaking operations." --Wikipedia ANW HUD-4 v1.11

Uncle Mark's Amazing Scenario Design System
I've added another brainstorming table, "100 EEZs Where Things Could Go Wrong." In this case, it's not the country itself that is in trouble, but the EEZ where a confrontation of one kind or another might take place. This includes all kinds of countries, ranging from those who might be particularly aggressive in defending their EEZ, to those involved in territorial disputes over borders, to those who have large EEZs that are hard to patrol and might look tempting to someone willing to engage in illegal fishing or similar activities.

A-class minehunter (Turkey)
A-class minehunter (Turkey) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_class_minehunter_%28Turkey%29 "The A Class is a class of minehunter vessels in the Turkish Navy. In 1999, the German shipyards Lürssen and Abeking & Rasmussen were contracted to build six Frankenthal class ships for the Turkish Navy, a business worth US$630 million. While the first vessel was built in Germany, later ships were constructed by the Istanbul Naval Shipyard.[1] The Turkish Navy has become the second naval force in the world, after the German Navy, to utilize a non-magnetic steel hull in its minehunter vessels." --Wikipedia As before, I would make the case for including more minesweeper classes. Mine-hunting operations can be modeled with the Reach Station victory condition, although action will need to be built around protecting the mine-hunters from other threats rather than actually finding the mines as those are not modeled in H3/ANW. In addition, I imagine minesweepers can be used for other basic patrol/intelligence-gathering missions. Against a 600-ton warship with a 30mm cannon, your average criminal or terrorist is probably not going to worry too much whether the thing is a minesweeper or a patrol boat. ANW HUD-4 v1.11

Bow thrusters have been provided for precision manoeuvring to enable the ships to navigate through restricted waters.
