File - Baltic Squeeze (1980)
File Name: Baltic Squeeze (1980) File Submitter: Mgellis File Submitted: 11 Jul 2013 File Category: Scenarios My 24th scenario of the year... A nice, basic Cold War scenario, set in 1980, in which West German forces must ambush a Soviet convoy headed for East Germany. It's one of those scenarios where, if you are careful, it is not too hard to win, but if you are not careful, it is very easy to lose. The Myasishchev design bureau was formed to build such a bomber." --Wikipedia This is one we never hear about it, overshadowed I guess by the Tu- bombers. But nearly one hundred were made and they served into the 1990s. ANW HUD-4 v1.2

File - Lion's Last Roar (1971)
File Name: Lion's Last Roar (1971) File Submitter: Mgellis File Submitted: 05 Jul 2013 File Category: Scenarios My 23rd scenario of the year... This scenario assumes that, in 1971, the United Kingdom tried to enforce an arms embargo on South Yemen, which it believed was creating instability in the region. The Soviet Union, an ally of South Yemen, refuses to recognize the embargo and has sent several merchants, some carrying weapons, to South Yemen; with them are several Soviet warships. Can the United Kingdom enforce the embargo, boarding and seizing those ships carrying contraband? This scenario was an attempt to demonstrate the flexibility of the HUD-4. Officially, the HUD-4 covers approximately 1980 to 2015; however, many platforms in the HUD-4 were active earlier in history. As one can see, it is not difficult to create scenarios set in the early 1970s using the HUD-4. In fact, the HMS Lion, for which this scenario is named, and which is in the database (because the Tiger-class cruisers were not completely retired until the 1980s), does not even appear in the HUD-4's official time frame, having been decommissioned in 1972 (and then cannibalized for parts for her sister ships). It seemed only fair, however, to give her a chance to play Harpoon, too. Image: British submarine HMS Ocelot (Source: U.S. DefenseImagery photo VIRIN: DN-ST-90-07973; Author: PH1(SW) J. AIM-7E now fires! (Bug squashed!)
I am pleased to report that the new version of the HUD-4, v. 1.2, with its updated data annexes, seems to have squashed at least one bug that has taken quite a while to track down and bring to justice. The AIM-7E-2/3 missile carried by many of the early Phantoms now fires and kills targets. (Some of the other AIM-7s always worked fine, but for the longest time the E-series just would not lock on and fire.) The missile is still a bit persnickety! As far as I can tell, you have to have a clear fix on the target's altitude or it will not lock on. But it is now possible to get it to fire and it will kill the aircraft at which one is shooting. I have not yet tested the other few remaining troublemaker weapons (Maverick-Ds, etc.) to see if the new HUD-4 has resolved their issues as well, but this is good news! Here are a couple of screen shots to show the AIM-7E-2/3 in action...

Ham-class minesweeper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ham-class_minesweeper "The Ham class was a class of inshore minesweepers (IMS), known as the Type 1, of the British Royal Navy. The class was designed to operate in the shallow water of rivers and estuaries. All of the ships in the class are named for British place names that end with -"ham"." --Wiikipedia Nearly one hundred of these were built and many were then sold to countries around the world. Some continued to be used as patrol boats into the 1980s. They might be useful in some Cold War scenarios. ANW HUD-4 v1.2

North American F-108 Rapier [#]
North American F-108 Rapier [#] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XF-108 "The North American XF-108 Rapier was a proposed long-range, high-speed interceptor aircraft designed by North American Aviation intended to defend the United States from supersonic Soviet bombers. To limit development costs, the program shared engine development with the North American XB-70 Valkyrie strategic bomber program, and used a number of elements of earlier interceptor projects. The program had progressed only as far as the construction of a single wooden mock-up when it was cancelled in 1959, due to a shortage of funds and the Soviet's adoption of ballistic missiles as their primary means of nuclear attack. Had it flown, the F-108 would have been the heaviest fighter of its era. Following the program's termination, the fire-control system, incorporating the Hughes GAR-9 missile, was adapted for the Lockheed YF-12, which was itself canceled." --Wikipedia Another "what if" aircraft...cancelled in the late 1950s. If the aircraft had not been canceled, it would have been a lot like an F-15E (it was about the same size, about 50 tons fully loaded), with a very good range, but faster and, I suspect, not as a good a dogfighter, being focused more for speed. Assuming the final design had been at least as good a flyer as, say, the F-104 or the MiG-25, it would likely have been considered reasonably successful design and might have stayed in US service for 20 or 30 years (and longer with allies once it was retired from the US air force). The US version would have used a special long range missile; it is also possible, if the missile program was cancelled, that the plane would have been fitted to fire the AIM-54 Phoenix from its rotary launcher instead. (An export version would have only been set up to fire Sparrow missiles, probably...I don't think we ever exported to the Phoenix or anything else with that kind of range to anyone else.) Or it might have been able to fire both missiles. ANW HUD-4 v1.2

It was that company's largest business aircraft when it first flew in 1962, other than a four-engined airliner developed during the 1950s, which was not put into development"--Wikipedia "The Cessna 421 Golden Eagle is a development of the earlier Cessna 411 light, twin-engine personal transport aircraft. The main difference between the two models is that the 421 is pressurized"--Wikipedia Another widely used light utility aircraft, worth including eventually mostly because it is used or has been used by the air forces of about a dozen countries. Armed civilian boats (and unarmed criminal ones)
Here's another one... Merchant - Tramp Steamer 1 x 76 mm. dual purpose gun (possibly the AK-726, maybe a twin-mount) 2 x AAA guns (possibly 37 mm.) 2 x automatic cannon (most likely 25 mm. or 30 mm.) 2 x SA-7 B (with several more in a magazine...i.e., they can be reloaded) This is a "things fall apart" scenario platform...in the near future, if things got really bad in some parts of the world, breakaway regions, city-states, etc. might begin to arm small merchants to give themselves something akin to an actual navy. I'm assuming the weapons here might be salvaged from old Soviet, Russian, Chinese, etc. warships. These are very much low budget, do it yourself affairs, and would stand little chance against a modern warship with cruise missiles. However, they would be able to beat the crap out of things like fishing boats and armed speed boats and they would be to conduct limited shore bombardments with the DP gun. Half-a-dozen ships like this could be a real game changer in a small conflict between factions in a civil war, etc. And a second, slightly tougher version... Merchant - Tramp Steamer 1 x 76 mm. dual purpose gun (possibly the AK-726) 2 x AAA guns (possibly 37 mm.) 2 x automatic cannon (most likely 25 mm. or 30 mm.) 1 x SAM system (possibly 8 x HQ-7 or 4 x SA-4 or 4 x Igla-1M...small, short range missiles but bigger than the shoulder-launched affairs in the first version) 1 x RBU 6000 ASW mortar (with reloads)

Armed civilian boats (and unarmed criminal ones)
A few more variations (and I changed the format slightly because the loadout should not be part of the ship's name...that would give too much away!)... CIV - Drifter Unarmed <-- the armed version is obviously being used by criminals, etc.; this one is just a light boat that might be used by civilians CIV - Lifeboat Unarmed Max. Speed: 0 Database Text: A generic lifeboat This was mentioned by someone else as a possibility...basically, just use the Drifter, but remove all weapons and change the maximum speed to 0. CIV 42' Motor Cruiser :7.62 mm GPMG :7.62 mm GPMG :RPG-7/-14 :RPG-7/-14 (A more lethal version of the "harmless fishing boat"..., the Skiff-C version, basically...) CIV - Sanpan - Fishing [Lines] Small arms <-- a version of this kind of vessel that is actually used for fishing and is not basically a small warship disguised as a fishing boat CIV - Sanpan - Fishing [Nets] Small arms <-- a version of this kind of vessel that is actually used for fishing and is not basically a small warship disguised as a fishing boat CIV - Trawler [Lines] Small arms <-- a version of this kind of vessel that is actually used for fishing and is not basically a small warship disguised as a fishing boat CIV - Trawler [Nets] Small arms <-- a version of this kind of vessel that is actually used for fishing and is not basically a small warship disguised as a fishing boat CIV - Fishing Dhow [Lines] :12.7 mm GPMG :7.62 mm GPMG :7.62 mm GPMG :RPG-7/-14 :RPG-7/-14 (Surprise! A fishing dhow that is basically a small warship disguised as a fishing boat!) CIV - Fishing Dhow [Nets] :12.7 mm GPMG :7.62 mm GPMG :7.62 mm GPMG :RPG-7/-14 :RPG-7/-14 (Surprise! Loadouts for aircraft
Recommended additions to aircraft loadouts... Bell 205 -- add the 1 x Generic Squad loadout (this is the civilian version of the UH-1 so it should have room for that many troops) Bell 214 -- add the 1 x Generic Squad loadout Bell 214ST -- add the 1 x Generic Squad loadout ANW HUD-4 v1.2

Ilyushin Il-14
Not sure if this will help, but I found a Harpoon annex for the IL-14... http://www.harpoondatabases.com/Platform.aspx?DB=3&Type=Plane&ID=521 It does appear to carry paratroops, which would make it a useful addition.

Almirante Clemente-class destroyer
Almirante Clemente-class destroyer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almirante_Clemente-class_destroyer "The Almirante Clemente class of destroyer escorts is a class of warships built for several countries. The class was designed by Luigi Ansaldo Ficantieri for the Venezuelan Naval Forces, currently Venezuelan Navy, in the 50's to complement its Nueva Esparta class destroyer." --Wikipedia Used until the 1970s, so technically a little outside the HUD-4's scope, but an interesting ship, and one that played an important role in a 1962 coup attempt in Venezuela. It might also show up in a number of Cold War scenarios in the Caribbean, so it might be worth adding. ANW HUD-4 v1.2

Armed civilian boats (and unarmed criminal ones)
A number of civilian boats that are not currently armed could have armed versions. This would allow one to simulate various kinds of police and criminal vessels. CIV 5 m. Speedboat Small Arms <-- a terrorist version with machine guns is already available (I might change the 12.7 mm. machine gun to a 7.62 mm. machine gun), but an additional version could be added where the people aboard only have a few pistols and rifles. Obviously, the boat couldn't stand up to much, but might give a coast guard helicopter or some other lightly armed patrol platform a bit of trouble. CIV 10 meter cruising yacht Small Arms (see above) CIV Boston Whaler Small Arms <-- this could be used to represent harbor police, etc. CIV 42' Motor Cruiser Small Arms <-- this could represent a boat with armed criminals or a police boat CIV Generic barge Unarmed <-- there is already a well-armed version of the barge (terrorist hideout?) but there really should be one that is just...well...a barge. That is, just use the same platform but take all the weapons off. MRCH - Freighter (22kt) Nuke <-- this represents a cargo vessel with a terrorist nuclear weapon hidden somewhere aboard; its goal is to sail into port and blow up. I guess the 20 kt PRC FF #2 nuclear bomb could be used to simulate the warhead? MRCH - Container Ship (22kt) Nuke <-- this represents a cargo vessel with a terrorist nuclear weapon hidden somewhere aboard; its goal is to sail into port and blow up. I guess the 20 kt PRC FF #2 nuclear bomb could be used to simulate the warhead?
