  2. All good suggestions, and I should get time to tackle these at the end of this week. Been busy working on another mini project for HCE.
  3. My potential interest in making this possible has been piqued by reading about Libya's large number (125 or so) of Cypriot, Libyan and Swedish constructed, remotely controlled 'suicide boats' acquired in the 1980s and used for coastal defence. (Not to mention the future potential for the same type of weapon in the Persian Gulf and elsewhere, of course).
  4. Still getting murdered by the AI, Joe? To be clear, TeTeT, AI missiles do not have a 100% kill rate, and neither do your own. pH of all missiles, regardless of which side is shooting them, is dictated by the DB values assigned to the missiles and aircraft, and the circumstances in which the engagement takes place.

  6. A predictable result ... From Janes Defect-ridden USS San Antonio should not have sailed, court martial told Lieutenant Commander Sean Kearns, a former executive officer in USS San Antonio, was found not guilty by a military jury on 5 November at the end of a trial at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, which highlighted design flaws and system failures in the first San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock. 7. From Defense Aerospace HMS Astute (Source: UK Ministry of Defence; issued Nov. 4, 2010) Various media report that nuclear-powered submarine HMS Astute, which [ran] aground off the Isle of Skye last week was damaged in a collision with a tug which tried to free it. We can confirm HMS Astute was in a minor collision with one of the tugs that assisted in refloating her, following an incident in which she became grounded off the Isle of Skye on 22 October 2010. Damage was assessed at the time and she was deemed fit to proceed under her own power to Faslane. She remains alongside at Faslane whilst investigations into the incident continue. From Defense Aerospace Navy Submarine Undergoing Repairs After Tug Boat Incident (Source: Australian Department of Defence; issued Nov. 9, 2010) The Royal Australian Navy submarine HMAS Dechaineux will undergo repairs after an incident involving a civilian tug boat while departing its berth at Fleet Base West in HMAS Stirling. The submarine was carrying out a routine manoeuvre with the tug when the tug crossed over Dechaineux's stern. No one was injured but a subsequent inspection has confirmed repairs are needed. HMAS Dechaineux will undergo repairs over the coming weeks. As a result, HMAS Dechaineux will withdraw from training exercises off the WA coast. HMAS Dechaineux was scheduled to participate in Navy's annual anti-submarine warfare exercise off the Western Australia coast. She will be replaced by HMAS Collins which is currently at sea.
  8. Yup. I generally only use the Formation Editor for ASW search or when I have a 'busy' battlefield where I am in relatively close contact with the enemy (stealth has generally evaporated) and I need a constant AEW&C, EW and AAW patrol over my formation. More typically I will use patrols outside the formation, as Larry has suggested, whether that be the Seahawk scanning the local area or a Hawkeye on AEW&C station. Neither will give a vector right back to your ships' location, unlike a formation patrol.
  9. Don pinged me with a PM on the idea and I can't say I am opposed to it. There is a nuke version of this kind of a weapon - a merchant ship with a suitcase nuke aboard - already in the HCDB, but I can certainly see how a non-nuclear suicide attack boat might be a useful platform. (For that matter, an MLU too). Collision or at least, a close approach, would be simulated by the short range of the weapon. I would suggest sticking with a coded phrase, 'baka' for example, so that it remains manageable both for the DB guys and in the code.

I have begun to add a few select ships from the World War I era, and in particular, this is aimed at including capital ships that participated in the Dogger Bank and Falklands engagements, the Battle of Jutland, and perhaps the Dardanelles campaign. 13. What is the HCCW? The HCCW is an acronym for the Harpoon Commander's Edition Cold War Database, a new custom database that will focus on aircraft, ships, submarines and installations that appeared during the height of the Cold War, and more particularly, during the period from 1950 through 1975. Harpoon Commander's Edition is particularly well suited, I believe, to modeling warfare during this period - the dawn of the missile age. The models in HCE are relatively simple and lend themselves well to the emergent technologies of the period: missiles, radar, electronic warfare, weapon guidance, to name but a few. The current release version of the HCCW is available from the Downloads section of this website. Extract the zip file into your main HCE directory. It will overwrite your current 'commondb.res' file. To maintain multiple databases, be sure to rename your existing 'commondb.res' file. A *.txt file is also included in the zip which details the latest update. The design philosophy of the HCCW is to maintain, wherever feasible, backwards compatibility with scenarios created with the database. The platforms (ships, submarines, aircraft, installations, and weapon systems) contained in the HCWW cover (generally speaking) the 1950-75 time period, but this is not a hard and fast rule, and there may be exceptions. Please note that copyright to HCCW database content is held by Brad Leyte (aka CV32). HCCW database content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License. You may copy, distribute and transmit the HCCW and all or parts of its content, but not derivative works based on it without the express written permission of the author Brad Leyte. The HCCW database may not be used for any commercial purpose whatsoever without the express written permission of Brad Leyte. Like any database, the HCCW is always a "work in progress". Requests for new platforms are always welcome, and stand a good chance of inclusion if (1) they adhere to the design philosophy described above, and/or (2) they are required for upcoming new scenarios. (This FAQ will be further developed as time goes on in order to keep everyone abreast of design or philosophy changes in the HCCW).

The stock HCE scenarios for EC2003 and Westpac will NOT function with this database installed. Use the stock HCE 'commondb.rsr' to ensure platform pic compatibility. 16. The initial release version of the Harpoon Commander's Edition (HCE) 'Cold War' Database (HCCW-101026) is now available. The database file is available from the Downloads section of this website. PLEASE NOTE that I am just including the commondb.res file to reduce the size of the download and simplify things. Just use your stock HCE commondb.res file. Be sure to rename any custom commondb.res file (such as commondb_custom.res, for example). Keeping the old file will permit you to easily switch back and forth between databases. You do not need to import to play the sim using the new HCCW. You will need to import if you want to use it in the Platform Editor. Take note that the stock scenarios included with the HCE simulation will not function with this database installed. 17. The Game Engine (GE) will always look to your 'commondb.res' file to find the database. When swapping databases, you are aiming to simply replace the current 'commondb.res' file. (If the database you're using also has a 'commondb.rsr' file, you will also be swapping out pictures of the platforms). So, to avoid any problems, simply keep an intact zipped copy of your existing HCE database (HCDB, etc), and when you want to switch back, unzip it to restore the original database. I hope this helps. If not, feel free to holler.
  18. Interesting, if only in a fanciful way. Most submarine designs with a large sail have proven to be terribly unstable.
