ROK/DPRK Atillery Duel
South Korean defense minister resigns Seems the lack of a credible response to DPRK aggression has claimed its first next victim.

Were the whales set as Neutrals, or as Red/Blue? AI controlled non-neutrals will ignore preprogrammed courses and move according to the tactical situation, usually directly for the player or directly away when they detect player controlled units.

ROK/DPRK Atillery Duel
They're not that good. The border areas between the DPRK and ROK are some of the most closely observed pieces of real estate in the world. Rest assured that the ROK and USFK know full well where the offending artillery (and note in particular that I am pointing specifically to the batteries that fired on the island) are located. Or, at least, where they were located. This particular area is regularly the site of KPA artillery drills, so it is not likely a case of highly mobile artillery moving in and then out to parts unknown. As time passes, the ability to exercise the option evaporates politically, of course, and to a lesser extent, militarily.

ROK/DPRK Atillery Duel
I agree. I believe the most appropriate low level response they should have considered, if they were inclined to go the 'low level' route, was to absolutely hammer the offending artillery positions into rubble. It would have been a demonstration of resolve and capability, and at the very least, would have removed a portion of the spectre of KPA artillery that seems to be hanging over heads in the ROK.

2010.012 Release Notes
I just bounced the nuclear SAM issue off Tony last nite, brought forward by my working on older Soviet SAMs for the HCCW. Immediately he looked at it, and came up with what looks to be a workable solution in no time flat. Just a reminder of how much we owe to HCE's one man programming crew. Thanks, Tony.

The F-105D lacking an IFR flag is an error. I'll fix that right away. SAM systems to come in due course, together with those tankers we discussed earlier today.

ROK/DPRK Atillery Duel
This tends to happen when you do not put a neighbourhood bully on his a** in the dust the first time and let him know that you are not going to put up with his krap. (Yes, an oversimplification of the dynamics at play here but nevertheless boiled down to the raw ingredients).

Ultimate Edition Compatibility
I've moved your post here, from the 'New at HarpGamer' announcement section of the forums. No, the Ultimate edition of Harpoon Commander's Edition is not multiplayer. However, see the beta section of the forums for potential future developments toward this end. See the beta release notes for the various upgrades and improvements that have taken place over time. (AI is a broad term that is applied loosely to HCE, and there are many game changes that may impact it). It means that HCE Ultimate edition does not have a 'play by e-mail' mode, as some other wargames do.

File - BattleSet - Indochina
I suppose if one is governed by terminology, then 'Indochina' really only means Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, but no matter. You can call your battleset 'Narnia' if you want. (I was thinking that folks who want to create scenarios for the post 1970s might not want to identify with Indochina).

Requests for the HCDB (Official DB of HCE) and HCDB2
Don't think I haven't been giving this some thought since the SDSR. Though perhaps I should be just deleting all British platforms rather than adding them? Just kidding. I will have a look at a British F-35C in due course, though I will note that in the Lockheed Martin JSF contract awarded a few days ago, there was mention of a single Royal Navy F-35B being covered in the contract.

File - BattleSet - Indochina
A good idea, Rene. Thanks for putting it up. I would have called it "Southeast Asia", though, as folks may want to use it for the modern era as well. We could use more of these small, focused maps. The Caucasus region comes to mind as one I have been meaning to create.

air defence barge in victory conditions problem
Maybe an FAQ will develop in due course but I should add that there aren't many hard and fast rules, and more than plenty of room for subjective viewpoints and flexibility. Take the "multiple subs in a group", for example. It does make them easier to find, track and destroy, but on the other hand, suppose you are making a convoy scenario with minimal ASW support. A multi-sub group might offer you better wide area coverage of the sea lanes, and increase the AI's ability to find targets, something you might desire in exchange for their own vulnerability.

HCDB: Question regarding F-35
Yes, and with superior stealth. In fact, superior in just about every way.

air defence barge in victory conditions problem
Anti-aircraft defenses used to be tied purely to the Installations in HC, but for quite some time now, we've had the ability to create and utilize individual SAM/AAA batteries and sites. The barges were a work-around or kludge that is no longer required. As for reality, no. Its a dumb idea. While it would be technically possible to put a small, relatively light air defense system (like Avenger or Roland or any number of examples), why would you want to? Even a barge moored in a sheltered harbor or tied to a wharf would be subject to wave action and the horrific effects of salt water on sensitive equipment. Moving them out into open sea would only aggravate the problem. Moreover, why tie a mobile air defense system to a barge, where space is lacking, it is exposed and visible, needs to be towed, needs difficult logistic support, and worse, can be 'sunk', when you can more easily put the same system ashore? There is little or no benefit to a barge.

air defence barge in victory conditions problem
SAM barges make little kittens cry. (I really do not like the SAM barges. They are a holdover from a time when HC lacked the ability to have mobile, land based air defences and we're way beyond that now. And if I had my way, they would be gone, gone, gone, but unfortunately we need them in the DB to maintain compatibility with the legacy scenarios out there that use them. New user scenarios should not use them, imho, because one day they will be history).

Ultimate Edition Compatibility
Yes, all of the databases available here - excepting a few that are specified for earlier versions of Harpoon Classic - are compatible. I would not have more than one installation. To my mind, swapping databases is already pretty easy. You're swapping a single file (commondb.res) if you just playing the game, and not using the Platform Editor. Otherwise you can use Tony's very good Launcher program, which is easier still. HarpGamer is the home of HCE development. The beta versions available here are at the 'bleeding edge' of improvements to the game, and are already well beyond what was packaged for HUE. Of course, beta's are intended for further development and experimentation, and come with that caveat. Check out the beta section of the forums for more information.

HCDB: Question regarding F-35
Yep, if you want to carry weapons internally and thus preserve the low observable status of the aircraft, you are limited in the number of air to air missiles carried. One of the many criticisms of the JSF.
-
Repeatable multi bearing attacks
In real life, yes. In HCE and this particular beast, no ... as the code requires that the 'carrier capable' flag be set.
-
Repeatable multi bearing attacks
Geography and geometry will dictate (currently, at least) whether you can pull off a multi-axis attack on a fixed target. It is easier to accomplish when attacking ship groups, but here you have to be concerned with the timing of the target's detection. The ability to have an air group launch an attack on a fixed target after reaching its patrol point is certainly a wish list item. It would essentially be waypoint control.

Nothing wrong with completeness. I will try to accommodate as many of these as possible.

Iran's domestic air defense
While no one would entirely discount 'flying telephone poles', Tehran should take note that a version of the S-200 (NATO SA-5 Gammon) is not a version of the S-300 (NATO SA-10 Grumble family), and to say otherwise does nothing for one's credibility ... From RIA Novosti Iran's domestic air defense system is upgraded version of S-200 Iran's domestic air defense system reported to be an analogue of the Russian S-300 is a mere upgraded version of the obsolete Soviet-made S-200, Iran's Press TV website said referring to top military officials. The S-200 was officially accepted into service in 1967. Iran acquired several systems from the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. Today, the S-200 is considered obsolete in comparison with the S-300. "We have developed the system by upgrading systems like the S-200 and we have tested it successfully using all our potential and experience in the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), the Army and the Defense Ministry," Brigadier General Mohammad Hassan Mansourian told Press TV on Wednesday. The move came after Russia refused to fulfill an S-300 delivery contract in September, the general added. Russia signed a deal to deliver five battalions of S-300PMU-1 air defense systems to Iran in 2007, but banned the sale in 2010, saying the systems, along with a number of other weapons, were covered by a fourth round of sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council against Iran over its nuclear program in June. The advanced version of the S-300 missile system, called S-300PMU1, has a range of over 150 kilometers (over 100 miles) and can intercept ballistic missiles and aircraft at low and high altitudes, making it an effective tool for warding off possible air strikes.
