Database Design & Discussion

  1. Started by CV32,

The initial release version of the Harpoon Commander's Edition (HCE) 'Cold War' Database (HCCW-101026) is now available. The database file is available from the Downloads section of this website. PLEASE NOTE that I am just including the commondb.res file to reduce the size of the download and simplify things. Just use your stock HCE commondb.res file. Be sure to rename any custom commondb.res file (such as commondb_custom.res, for example). Keeping the old file will permit you to easily switch back and forth between databases. You do not need to import to play the sim using the new HCCW. You will need to import if you want to use it in the Platform Editor. Tak…

A new version of the Harpoon Classic Database (HCDB-050220) is available. The download is available from the HarpGamer website (www.harpgamer.com). PLEASE NOTE that we are now just including the commondb.res file to reduce the size of the download and simplify things. Just rename your current commondb.res file (such as commondb_original.res, for example) and copy the new one into the HCG root directory. Keeping the old file will permit you to easily switch back and forth between databases. You do not need to import to play the sim using the new HCDB. You will need to import if you want to use it in the Platform Editor. More details can be found in the FAQ at our website…

A new version of the HCDB2 or Harpoon Commander's Edition Database 2 (HCDB2-161204) is now available. This particular version, is the inaugural version of this new DB for HCE, which builds upon the 10 years of HCDB success and takes on a new focus to exploit new capabilities within the sim. The file is available from the download section of this website (www.harpgamer.com). Please note that we are now just including the commondb.res file to reduce the size of the download and simplify things. Just rename your current commondb.res file (such as commondb_original.res, for example) and copy the new one into the HCG root directory. Keeping the old file will permit…

We have two main database authors, CV32 and Divefreak who have led two streams of platform database curating for public consumption. As you can see from this sub-forum's threads, neither of those masters are active presently which severely limits the attractiveness of the game to scenario authors. For many, if they can't put the latest platforms in a scenario, they will turn to a different simulation. Being inclined toward writing code I tend to try to solve with technology, in this case writing a new Platform Editor (PE) and the littany of associated changes to the other game components. Benefits: 1. Make the number of entries in the database ne…

Hello, I sent Tony a WestPac scenario I designed three years ago and following my own ideas concerning the problem. I think I finally managed to come close to the solution. Yesterday I experienced several crashes - outside the WestPac battleset. It was time to deinstall and reinstall. I installed the original HC 2002 Gold and patches up to 2003.16b8 (Jan 17th, 2005). Now all scenarios, including my WestPac scen Duel run just fine. Thus my whole HC Gold installation probably was corrupt. Next I installed the latest HCDB, but now i get crashes in scenedit again when I try to edit groups/bases - "...probably corrupt rsr - file." My questions: 1. Is that …

Some code that I changed years ago has been bothering me. At one point I limited the Damage Points of non-nuclear weapons to 999 DP. That has no functional merit in the code so I've gone back to the old limit of 30,000DP for a conventional weapon. So have fun DB editors, you can make bigger bombs again...

I was looking at the Strategic Defense Intelligence site and came across these three articles: http://www.strategicdefenceintelligence.co...hvi_II_missile/ This one appears to just be a range increase over the one already in the DB. http://www.strategicdefenceintelligence.co...dified_cockpit/ This appears to be a typo (helicopter?) but I did some more research and I believe its about this aircraft: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/india/lca.htm I looked in the in game platform display but didn't see it in there. And last: http://www.strategicdefenceintelligence.co...vladimir_putin/ Not a very informative article but an intersting platform IMO…

Would you consider adding the Project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov? I found this on Janes and several other sources: 4500 tonnes 132m armament will include: 8 SS-N-26 SA-N-7 Uragon VLS (I assume similar to SA-17) 1 Kashtan Medvedka 2 SS-N-29 VLS 130mm A-192 Also, after reading Janes and then doing some quick research online I found a few bits of interesting info that is slightly different from the current DB. For Yaseni, most sources I read have 24 missiles (8 launchers with 3 missiles each) which will be a combo of cruise missiles and SS-N-26. Also, all the sources I find has Aster 30 range of approx 100km. For Steregushchiy, everything I can find says that the…

  13. Greetings, Is the SKRUNDA (AR SWATH) PB for Latvia, part of the HUCE DB? Two of four units have been delivered as of 2012 and I was wanting to utilize it, in a planned scenario in my BRICS campaign. If you need details on the class, let me know and I can provide them.

Is there a way to obtain Access 97, or another version of MS Access, as freeware? I do not have it and would like to be able to use the PE but do not feel like buying Access from Microsoft.

I still haven't found my old copy of Office 97 and I'm wondering about Access 97 Runtime that you guys have made available to us. Is it more than a viewer or can it be used to modify and save DBs? Create report formats, etc?

  16. Hi guys, Just read some interesting tidbits about Chile's modernization of its Type 23 frigates. A NIPmail piece (August 2011) shows that in mid-2011 they contracted with BAE Systems for an update to the Tracker Type 911 surveillance radar and Thales Underwater Systems for the addition of their 2087 towed-array sonar. The radar tweak is nothing really significant, but from an ASW standpoint, the frigates didn't previously have a towed array. This would give them quite a capability update and expand their capability. This might be benefitial, from a scenario design perspective.

I would like to know if there is a way to include pics or line drawings and linking them to the platform in the DB. I find a lot have got a no pic available and I would like to correct as many as I can in the DB. As a Naval Electronic Sensor Operator (Canadian Navy) I would like to include photos of CDN platforms that currently show (no pic available)

Greetings, Is there any chance the naval inventories of smaller forces can be added to the HUCE database? These forces would help to fleshout the South America, Sub-Saharan Africa and the smaller forces in the GUIK and WestPac battlesets. Adding these smaller units would make generating a broader range of scenarios possible. If numbers and names need to be plugged into an Excel spreadsheet to be incorporated into the DB, send me a template of the Excel workbook and I'b be more than happy to plug int the numbers and text to help the community in developing a better gaming experience. Best regards!

  20. Started by Akula,

Actually just one today. I am trying to figure out the fuel category. This one eludes me, as I can't seem to come up with how that number is figured or what units of measure are used on it. It seems that when I check sourses against the existing DB, none of the figures I am using is matching the number in the slot for that AC. Now this could mean my sources are not entirely correct, or that I am making a calculation error or its even possible that I am totally clueless (actually a high percentage chance on the latter) . Is there an easy explanation and I have just completely missed it?
