TACTICS 101: ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE (ASW): PART 2 - THE TOOLS OF ASW In Part 1, we learned the basics of naval oceanography, and in large part, how sound behaves in the subsurface ocean environment. Now, in Part 2, we move to the tools of anti-submarine warfare (ASW), the sensors, platforms, and weapons. Much of the material contained here is probably "old hat" to seasoned Harpoon players, and certainly generally available to anyone who is willing to take the time and effort to dig up the information. The purpose of this "Tactics 101" discussion, however, is to provide a workable foundation for those who may be completely new to naval warfare and its concepts. Pa…

Hi guys, been playing the boxed Harpoon Ultimate Edition with all the latest updates installed for a while now and looking at playing some of the different scenarios found on here. I always play the Harpoon CE version from the game disk build 2015.027 I'm running Windows 10 and everything at the moment runs fine with no crashes. However, my laptop's DVD doesn't function anymore and I'm just a bit worried that by adding additional files I could make the game unstable and then I wont be able to re-install the game. To allow some of the scenarios to run I'm guessing that I will have to download a new database that will cover the objects in the scenario, can that live…

How does this happen? I've looked and I don't see anything in the list of platforms (except for barges) but I know scenarios are writen with specific numbers of SAMs. It would be especially nice if we could add Aegis Ashore and THAAD sites to high value targets like...Guam. Thanks in advance... Byron

I have the following questions: SAMs: The AI handles the air defense for the units. What is the protocol for the air defense? I have had some games where the area defense ships seem not to fire at incoming asms. Or, the targeted unit will wait to fire short range sams and not fire the long-range sams. (I may be mistaken, so if anyone has had similar experiences....) Torpedoes: I've just had a game where an AI Russian sub fired a torpedo with no chance of getting hit. It was apparently a short-range torpedo. If the sub had fired a long-range wake-following torpedo it might of had a chance. Is their a weapons hierarchy? Is the AI set to fire at maximum rang…

I will admit to having been able to play through this scenario once and still come away unscathed during Red's first vicious antiship missile attack. Otherwise I can usually save the carriers, albeit rarely without sustaining some damage and never without losing an escort. How have others fared? Man up!

I don;t know if this is new, or I just never came across it before. When I attempt to launch an aircraft from a base to attack a sub target, I get a message saying "Sir, we currently have no released weapons to conduct an ASW attack". If I launch the aircraft to patrol and then order it to attack the target as soon as it launches, the attack proceeds as usual. I have a screenshot, but I can't figure out how to attach it. Thanx, Buddha

Back in 1998 I started war-gaming by playing Avalon Hill's Advanced Squad Leader, and I still have my original rule book, game boards with 5 expansions, and 2,000 plus game counters carefully stored in two large fishing tackle boxes that I protect with my life. I currently play TacOps4, and I like to have as many details as possible for weapon systems and tactics as I can. I was extremely excited when TacOps4 came bundled with 167 different US Military Field, Technical, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Manuals in pdf format (with searchable text). I have only played land warfare up until now. I discovered Harpoon just a month ago when I was reading an analogy that TacOps was…

I'm wondering what battlesets have the newer HCE features that are based 1980-1990 or so. I believe I saw the included HCDA/S/? or whichever those 3 or 4 are have active jamming working but didn't know if they have the full set of new goodies. Am I correct? Also.. which other battlesets do/don't have the new features? I've noticed the DB80to95 but haven't seen much in the way of created scenarios for it. Could someone point me in the right direction? I've not dove into scenario creation yet (I will sometime), but playing your own scenarios takes a bit of the surprise out of it, doesn't it?

With the advent of the original ASROC , somewhere around 1968, dual ship attack procedures disappeared from the books. Does anyone still have the procedures including the plastic template and the communications procedures? I was the tactical communicator on the USS Morton (DD 948) in 63' and 64' and Tom Slattery let me run attacks. But, I have forgotten the crucial parameters for determining direction of turn and rotation, along with the flow of attack. Anyone know how to play old fashioned ASW with depth charges, hedge hogs and MK 46s?

Hello all, I'm something like an old noob. I've played with Harpoon (classic only) on and off since 1994. Mostly off, truth be told, but I always think that someday I should get back to Harpoon since it's really challenging and fun. I found a HC97 manual when I moved my computer workstation the other day and this started me Googling. I was thinking that HCE sounds pretty good. But... Although there are still links and pages for various sellers, it seems that HCE is no longer sold, but the "ultimate" package (HUCE) is available for ~$60 for a huge download. That version includes HCE, and there is a recently validated, time-limited demo version of HCE. Is all that corr…

Since I installed 2021.005 every time I open the game I have to resize all the windows to my own idiosyncratic settings. Its hardly the end of the world but I feel that: a) I'm probably doing, or have done, something wrong or, b) I've failed to spot a 'fix' that's already been posted in the forum. Any help, advice, guidance would be appreciated. On an unrelated matter - just sheer curiosity on my part - why is it that, in the older Battlesets, the standard loadout for ASW Seahawk and Oceanhawk helos was generally "ASW" (i.e. 2 torpedoes) whereas in the later Battlesets the loadout is generally "ASW-LR" (i.e. 1 torpedo)?

Newbie still fumbling around here So a good approach is to install HUCE and then the HarpGamer updates to that version of Harpoon, as this is the supported version of HCE? Please tell me the updates are cumulative? Is there some sort of app supporting changing databases around or is that just done down in the files and folders yourself? And is there some sort of database viewer? Any advice much appreciated and will save me hours of digging around to rediscover the secret of the wheel.

I've restarted work on Part 4 of the Tactics 101: ASW effort, which will focus on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) as it is modeled in HCE. Obviously there will be ship vs sub, sub vs sub, and air vs sub. But what kinds of specific match up's would you like to see covered?
