I understand ROF for gun mounts is per minute, but please explain what ROF = for missile mounts. For example a Mk41 VLS has ROF of 30 per tactical turn (30 seconds) per Harpoon Data Annex. What value would you put in the database for ROF for the Mk41 mount? Example Mk26 has ROF of 6 missiles per tactical turn (30 seconds) per Harpoon Data Annex. What value would you put in the database for ROF for the Mk26? From testing it appears the ROF is irrelevant for non-SAM mounts. SSM missile or torpedo mounts for example fire as many round as allocated in the attack menu all at the same time. I'm more concerned about getting a good understanding of how SAM ROF works and how …

File Name: Stalintc's Staff Assistant Mod File Submitter: Stalintc File Submitted: 12 Apr 2009 File Category: Tools/Mods/Docs Authors: Stalintc Stalintc's Staff Assistant Mod Version: 1.01 This Mod is intended to slightly improve the aesthetics of the staff assistant window. I have replaced the backgrounds with new ones, which I think the staff assistants look much happier in In order to install 1) backup your Graphics folder in C:\Matrix Games\HCE 2) then move the two jpg files from this zip file into the graphics folder, clicking yes to any overwrite request. 3) load up HCE and test to make sure it works 4) voila!! new staff assista…

Here's something those of you with naval service experience or engineering knowledge might be able to help out with: How long could a warship sustain flank speed? By this I mean pedal to the metal, all out pushing the ship at its maximum capable speed. Now I realize that this varies among propulsion types (steam, diesel, gas, nuclear, etc), ship types, even among individual ships, and of course, flank speed is limited by fuel (something akin to afterburner on a fighter jet), but I'm interested in your educated guesstimate. But if you can be more specific, then by all means please go ahead. If you're really naval engineering tech savvy, then how long do you…

Since I rejoined the community with HCE I have noted that AAMs appear to be quite lethal, which wouldn't necessarily be bad, but then I found that SARH missiles will keep on guiding despite having the launching aircraft turning away and I am bit baffled.... For example, playing the "Backyard" scenario in the WestPac battleset, I found that Su-27s and F-18s could fire AA-10s/AIM-7s nearly simultaneously, turn away and lit 'burners, and there's a good chance that the Sparrows will shot down the Sukhois as they will keep on guiding. I thought, or at least I understood from the manual, that this wouldn't be the case.

The idea of beefing up the usefulness of recon aircraft got me thinking. I've putzed around with Harpoon over the years and am coming back to it again and really liking HCE. I usually find myself overwhelmed with the huge scenarios with platforms all over the landscape doing all sorts of things. I prefer smaller scenarios where the problems are more limited - like escorting a convoy across the Atlantic in the face of Badgers, Bears and Victors or conducting a detailed carrier strike against a target. Currently I'm setting up a 'test range' with a base in Greenland from which I'll be running flights down to Keflivik to get a feel for what the various aircraft can d…

This is something I came across that might be of interest. From: http://navysite.de/cvn/cvw.htm It probably belongs in the FAQ thread, but I can't post there. I couldn't completely clean up the format, but I think it is understandable. The Air Wing compositions from 1943 to 1998 The charts below do not reflect the exact Air Wing composition they just give an approximate view of the most common compositions. In addition to the CVW a Fleet Tactical Support Squadron (VRC) Detachment consisting of 2 planes is embarked aboard the carrier. These detachments are not listed below. In the "additionally" – chart lists just the most often used squadrons. These are squ…

This is the first in what will hopefully be a series of discussions on tactics in HCCE, inspired in part by Pete's suggestions. The first topic will be power projection or strike planning: These are my personal comments on Strike Planning. I like to borrow from the USAF's Targeting Guide, which is far more complex than necessary than required by HCCE, but it contains helpful principles and guidance. For example, for the purposes of this exercise, I assume that we have already determined what target we want to hit and what objectives we hope to achieve by hitting that particular target. Let's assume, as well, for the sake of our assessment, that our target is …

I used various versions some years ago, finishing on Classic and W98. One of the problems was non re-sizable windows; ridiculously small on a large screen (1600x1200, or better). (Current hardware is twin core Athlon running XP.) So far as I can tell the main difference between the two versions is single user v multi-user. I expect mainly single user, but for the small price difference multi-user would be nice if there were no penalties or 'gotchas'. Is there any compelling reason to choose one or the other? Can old battlesets and scenarios be updated for use with either version?; or does one merely download new versions? Am I right in thinking that there…

Playing the EC2000 Battle for the Norwegian Sea scenario Nordic Light and so far I have shot down 12 Tornado - somehow. Only info I have is that they have been shot down in the Message Log - no other info. What is going on? Assuming they are getting shot down by my assets, shouldn't I at least have some info on it happening? Puzzled, Akmatov

Hello Everyone, I'm an old GDW Harpoon miniatures gamer who made the jump to HCE. I have cleanly upgraded to the .044 version and it's working with all default scenarios. My problem is that I've downloaded a couple of Westpac scenarios here (like Sprat in the Spratleys) but I can't get them to load properly. What I did is I created a subdirectory inside the \Matrix Games\HCE\ folder and unzipped all the files there. I immediately noticed that Load User Scenario is looking for files that match a .sc? filter. Overriding the filter and forcing the file load results in a GE crash. I searched the General Discussion and the Scenario Design forums but there wasn't a topic c…

I launch an Orion and tell it where to patrol. It's sitting loitering, rather than patrolling. Shouldn't it be dropping bouys? Am I going to have to put it in formation with the airbase to get it to do that?

Just wondering if anybody else is playing around with the beta. Downloaded it a couple weeks ago and most stuff works pretty well. All the HCE stuff seems to work fine except for the Scenario Editor. Anybody else having problems? I'm running version 2008.044. I've tried running the Scenario Editor in all of the different compatibility modes but no dice. Fully understand that I'm running a beta OS, and incompatibilities are to be expected, just wondering if anybody else has had any luck getting it to work. Thanks, Jim

TACTICS 101: ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE (ASW): PART 2 - THE TOOLS OF ASW In Part 1, we learned the basics of naval oceanography, and in large part, how sound behaves in the subsurface ocean environment. Now, in Part 2, we move to the tools of anti-submarine warfare (ASW), the sensors, platforms, and weapons. Much of the material contained here is probably "old hat" to seasoned Harpoon players, and certainly generally available to anyone who is willing to take the time and effort to dig up the information. The purpose of this "Tactics 101" discussion, however, is to provide a workable foundation for those who may be completely new to naval warfare and its concepts. Pa…
