Sorry for the late notice but today at 9pm GMT (3pm Central Time US) we are going to be chatting live about possibilities for re-working the structure of a Unit in HC. This means arguing about whether a sensor should be part of a mount or whether a sensor is part of the ship itself,... Discussing how a Marine is carried in a landing craft, and so on and so forth. We'll be chatting on #harpgamer on the newnet.net IRC network (you can use the server irc.newnet.net) We have two Java clients available at http://www.harpgamer.com If you can't get the Java client to work or your regular IRC client, use the PHP chat at http://www.harpgamer.com and I'll see i…

TACTICS 101: ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE (ASW): PART 2 - THE TOOLS OF ASW In Part 1, we learned the basics of naval oceanography, and in large part, how sound behaves in the subsurface ocean environment. Now, in Part 2, we move to the tools of anti-submarine warfare (ASW), the sensors, platforms, and weapons. Much of the material contained here is probably "old hat" to seasoned Harpoon players, and certainly generally available to anyone who is willing to take the time and effort to dig up the information. The purpose of this "Tactics 101" discussion, however, is to provide a workable foundation for those who may be completely new to naval warfare and its concepts. Pa…

I have the following questions: SAMs: The AI handles the air defense for the units. What is the protocol for the air defense? I have had some games where the area defense ships seem not to fire at incoming asms. Or, the targeted unit will wait to fire short range sams and not fire the long-range sams. (I may be mistaken, so if anyone has had similar experiences....) Torpedoes: I've just had a game where an AI Russian sub fired a torpedo with no chance of getting hit. It was apparently a short-range torpedo. If the sub had fired a long-range wake-following torpedo it might of had a chance. Is their a weapons hierarchy? Is the AI set to fire at maximum rang…

I'm wondering what battlesets have the newer HCE features that are based 1980-1990 or so. I believe I saw the included HCDA/S/? or whichever those 3 or 4 are have active jamming working but didn't know if they have the full set of new goodies. Am I correct? Also.. which other battlesets do/don't have the new features? I've noticed the DB80to95 but haven't seen much in the way of created scenarios for it. Could someone point me in the right direction? I've not dove into scenario creation yet (I will sometime), but playing your own scenarios takes a bit of the surprise out of it, doesn't it?

Question for the programmers: would it be possible to arrange things so that the detection range circles are displayed relative to the 'active' unit? eg A B-52 is the active (currently 'clicked on') unit, so the range circle of the Red Mainstay shows ~300 nm detection radius. I then click on a nearby F-22 escorting the B-52, and the range circle for the Mainstay drops to, I dunno, maybe 40 nm? It was a lot easier to guestimate the safe zones when aircraft were either 'large' or 'small' ...

Given that these seem to be the 'Current Files' and my HUCE is v2015.027 would I be correct in thinking I need only install HC2015.028 SE to be fully uptodate?

I just downloaded the latest (2005b09c) version and installed it, and I'm having a problem with the platform Editor. I created a new surface platform and saved it. When I open any scenario in any of the EC2003 Battlesets, the platform appears under Platform Display/All Platforms. When I use the Scenario Editor in any of these Battlesets (or any Battleset for that matter), my unit doesn't appear under available units. Since I can see it under all units in any regular scenario, I know it's in there somewhere. What am I missing here? Thanx: Tom

The Databases for EC2000 and EC2003 make reference to, for example, Mawsil AD and Kifh TC. What do the AD and TC signify?

I had an interesting thing happen last night. The situation is two medium size enemy surface groups approaching, and submarines. Blue side fired a number of rounds of ASROC at subs intermediate the two main group bodies. The Red fired SAM (SM-2s?) at the ASROCs but the ASROCs delivered their loads before SAM intercept and the SAM kept going to hit one of the Blue ships. All of that I think is very good behaviour. The ship hit (and surrounding ships in the group) appeared to make no defensive move against the incoming missiles, not even the usual point defense got x of 'em, although they did warn 'in coming missiles you should fire up the radar' type message. . Has an…

I played HC'97 20-25 years ago and loved it. I completed a good chunk of the scenarios and battlesets back then. I noticed a few weeks ago that it was available on Steam, so I purchased it for nostalgia's sake. I completed all of the GIUK scenarios from the first battleset and moved on to the NACV battleset. Here is where I am running into issues. All three of the Okean class vessels in the first two scenarios are replaced with Kalinin class vessels. It is very odd to have a cruiser sailing solo with no escorts. It also causes severe imbalance issues, making the scenarios completely impossible for US/Blue and unenjoyable/non-challenging for USSR/Red. After doing a…

Hey all: Went and bought the Harpoon Ultimate edition and have been enjoying it immensely. However I noticed something that for me is a little offputting. Down the bottom of the game screen there seems to be a scrolling text advertisement for various image packs and the like. It also speaks highly of buying the game, which is a little strange since I bought it online from Matrix games. Is this stuff supposed to be there? Can I turn it off? Thanks Ant

Hi, Long time Harpoon user, but have not used it for many years. Just bought the ultimate edition. Is there a link or suggestion for workflow? I am a MAC guy (i7 IMAC), but have win 7 64 bit running via bootcamp. I just loaded the win xp emulator so i can use the scenario editor. What programs should i load and where (win 7 and virtual pc), suggestions on how do set up your folders, manage different databases (i like to play around with the platform editor...sometimes even more than the game). I am not that experienced with the virtual xp set up, so I wouldnt mind leveraging off someone else's hard work! Any help would be appeciated. Sorry if this h…

When playing Harpoon I realize that radars do not always detects the whole number of aircrafts in a group. Is it stealthier a group composed of 2 F16 (or another plane) than a group composed of 4 F16? I suppose that radars have more chances to detect a group if there are more planes in this group.

I have computer harpoon classic for windows version 1.63. I've downloaded several scenarios from the "classic" section here and can not get any of them to work. I've no idea how this is supposed to be done; I've poked around this site & the internet with a search engine & still do not know how to use these custom scenarios. I've tried doubleclicking on the downloaded file, then choosing harpoon to open the file, but then harpoon tells me that the saved game that I am trying to load is not compatible with my version of harpoon. Any help would be appreciated! thanks in advance, - - Rob

File Name: turncoat.ps1 File Submitter: Grumble File Submitted: 13 Aug 2013 File Category: Tools/Mods/Docs turncoat.ps1 is a simple Powershell script that will set the player's side in HCE save game file. It does this by overwriting bytes 0x12b and 0x12c of the file so be careful what do you feed it. The script does rudimentary checking to make sure it is working with an actual HCE save file but you use it on your own risk. The location of these bytes will probably change when the format of the save file changes, the script works for me currently, as of 2013/08/10, with the 2009.086 GE save files. It would take much more than these two bytes to properly swit…
