Classic versions - jettison ordenance
Welcome (back) Grumble! First I'll start with the newest release notes. The current beta builds of HC are located at: http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/topic/2049-current-files/ . Within say, "HC2009.075GE.zip", is a ReleaseNotes.txt detailing the changes since October 19, 2004. Some of the older versions of HC that you are tinkering around with have information, examples in a default installation: C:\Matrix Games\HUCE\HC20\DH00132A\README.TXT C:\Matrix Games\HUCE\HC20\WH00163D\patch.txt I would like to enable jettisoning again so this is a good opportunity to discuss how you would write the rules for when planes jettison their 'bombs'. Some of the programmers that came before me didn't give much detail in code comments /* gw 10/94 taken out Jettison(targetGroup,(UnitPtr)NULL,FALSE);*/ // AG ordnance so we can DUCK!!! For the history buffs, gw stands for Gordon Walton.

HCE Release Notes
HCE - 2009.075 - 2013/03/05 =========================== - Chg:0000 GE Made some dialogs show three digit Unit IDs. (thanks Eric)

Bribes for helping out with HCE
Hehe, you are doing quite a lot on the HC front anyway, we need more players to step up and improve the game. You already have and continue to do so year after year.

Tags employed on Scenario designation.
Thank you for putting in all of that effort adding images and tags to your scenarios! Had I known in advance I would have tried to find the setting to allow larger images. Anyway, I know the images don't make the scenarios any better but the curb appeal will certainly draw more players to the scenarios, thanks again!

HCE Release Notes
HCE - 2009.074 - 2013/03/01 =========================== - Chg:0000 GE Added -S command line option that will save the game every game second in a ITER_SAVE_GAMETIME subdirectory of your game directory. The -S command line option has two specifiers -S123450100 would save the game every 12,345 game seconds and would go from .001.hp? to .100.hp? before rolling over and overwriting .001.hp?. Also added the save message to the message log window.

File - HC Launcher
2013.001 - 2013/03/01 Fixed a bug where a space wasn't left after the -S command line option. Note that the -S option will work with the 2009.074GE that I post shortly. It will not have any effect on earlier GE versions.

Can the HUD-4 Use Wikimedia Commons Images?
When we did imagery for HC and ANW with Darren the images came from defenseimagery.mil. Each image has to be checked for copyright individually (which consists of looking at the image metadata) once downloaded. In our experience that was the easy part. Then you have to format the images and apply any watermarks Gunny wants shown (Darren was very into a specific overlay for HUD images). For posterity one would also maintain a listing stating the source of the image (such as defenseimagery.mil and its original VIRIN and whatever other information would be handy. Ideally you would also keep an archive of the original images for when the next great presentation mechanism pops up. Then the coordination with Gunny starts, organizing and numbering the media in a way you both agree upon. If I were Gunny I'd want to spend my time editing the database, not messing with images but maybe if enough of the work was done for him he would incorporate it? But yes, agreed, people like eye candy. As for Wikipedia Commons, I would put any copyright status listed there under intense scrutiny by going back to the source. Not all US Government images are public domain though the vast majority do fall under that category.

Just curious...is the HUD-4 the "official" database now?
HUD4 is the official database for ANW Ultimate edition, yes.

Thoughts on designing multi-player scenarios
Hi Mark, That's great that you have some interest. I can run a server but you'll have to actually get people to play. Experience with earlier ANW versions clearly demonstrated that it takes feet on the street to drum up MP players. You have to schedule the meetups with individual participants, not just set up a server and expect people to mingle in the lobby and have a jolly game. I have not attempted to run an MP server with 3.11, 3.10 was extremely unstable (very lucky to make it through Dawn Patrol, if even into the game from the lobby). In the event you do manage to find two or more people to have a go at it: All participants should be using the same patch level of the game. Ideally all participants will have the same database loaded as the server uses (this isn't strictly required but it can help avoid platform display crashes) The scenarios should be tiny, playable from end to end in less than two hours at 1:1 - 5:1 time compression. Games can be saved and re-loaded later, in practice that rarely happens. Seriously consider one or two ships per side, one of the ships on each side carrying a helo for quicker identification and throw in some neutrals to make the trigger finger think twice. Let me know if and how you'd like to proceed. Thanks for stopping by IRC, sorry most of us missed you, I'll be on Sunday 6pm Central US time helping out a player.

FNG with a problem
DK, any interest in doing screen sharing/remote support of some sort such as TeamViewer? I could potentially get things squared away pretty quickly while you look on. I'll be around on IRC chat starting about 21.5 hours from now, grab http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/files/file/281-hg-irc-win32-chat-client/ to come say hello. Also known as 5pm Central Time USA You can also try FreeNode's WebChat, the channel is #harpgamer http://webchat.freenode.net/

FNG with a problem
We can work from your theory about a lack of files by listing them... 1. Get to a command prompt, if Win7 or Win8 tap the Windows key then type cmd and press enter. If Windows XP, Start\Run type cmd.exe and click OK. 2. at the prompt type the following line then press Enter tree "C:\Matrix Games\Harpoon 3 Ultimate Advanced Naval Warfare" /F /A > c:\ANWFiles.txt 3. Post ANWFiles.txt here and I'll have a look. For fun, rename harpoon3.ini to harpoon3.ini.bak and then run harpoon3.exe and see what happens, if anything. Thanks

FNG with a problem
That's a good start, sounds like the games are installed. For HC, please download and run http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/files/file/228-hce-clear-game-options-registry-settings/ . After that run Winharp32.exe directly by double-clicking on it. Success? That file deletes the initial HC game settings since your game may be pointing to a installation in a different folder. If that works we can move on to the H3 versions.

FNG with a problem
Sure we can help but we'll need more information. What folders were created and was there anything in any of them? There is the initial installer that just unpacks the individual installers, did you see any installer after the main one pop up (i.e. did you see nested installer screens)? Do you have a good chunk of space on your C:\ drive, like > 4GB? That initial installer seems to be hard-coded to the C: drive so if there isn't enough space it never gets to do the individual game installations.

China Shows Off Futuristic Ships at IDEX
The shape of the LPD looks way off in the model, too wide and short? It looks like a GI Joe toy in that photo. Still, good for China stepping up into the big leagues and exporting larger systems.

Multiplayer?
Not a dumb question at all. I would certainly like to see multiplayer, it is #2 on my wishlist (we encourage you to create your own wishlist) http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/topic/2080-wish-list-guidelines/ In order to make it happen though we need a lot more community participation. HC is developed on a volunteer basis and there isn't nearly enough participation to make multiplayer happen anytime soon.

Database issue for COIL laser (on Boeing YAL)
From a game perspective I don't believe it would be prudent to allow targeting of aircraft with the ABL. Real Life Issues: The targeting system was not optimized for that use. It likely would have taken multiple "shots" to assure a kill of an airplane, these shots not being cheap in the first place. Game Issues: In many situations, the ABL would become the air to air weapon of choice due to its range and high hit chance. While the player might use it sparingly or only in self defense, the AI would waste shots on aircraft instead of saving them for ballistic missiles.

How can I find out what I need to do to win?
Hi Andy, this may sound scary, but what battleset houses "Splendid Little War"? If it is a pre-EC2000 battleset you can use the 20th Anniversary edition launcher to run a DOS-based scenario editor from one of the old versions and give the victory conditions a look (Harpoon 1.58E specifically). If you can't find the icon for the 20th Anniversary edition launcher, go to your HC directory, then into HC20 and run HC20Run.exe If you think you may not be getting to the proper locations to trigger on station victory conditions, see the keyboard command to show the on station rectangles, http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/files/file/417-keyboard-commands-by-location/ If you have or upgrade to Win 7 Pro see http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/files/file/718-docs-scenario-editor-in-windows-xp-mode/ There is also the very manageable approach a number of people have taken, grab an old XP machine and run the SE there (even Win 2000 or 98).
