Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon Classic/Commander's Edition

  1. Started by Esoteric,

I just started playing Harpoon again after many, many years. This scenario seems to be much harder than I remember. When I used to play it, I could reach 10 subs easily. Now I struggle to get 3. It seems like every time a sub is detected by SOSUS, by the time one of my picket planes get there it has disappeared. And my sub pickets never pick up anything even if I put them basically side by side in the gaps. What am I missing here? What is going on?

  2. Hello! Recently, thanks to a post in Matrix forum, I bought the book STRIKE GROUP REAGAN; being an Harpoon player, I loved it a lot! BTW, as soon as possible, I'm thinking to build a couple of scenarios based on it. Today I discovered another book titled THE SIXTH BATTLE and I bought it as well. So my question is simple ... are there other books enjoyable by an Harpoon player and suitable to be used as a base for scenarios? Thanks in advance! Roberto

117 new Harpoon scenarios to enjoy! David Ennis has kindly decided to share his private collection of vintage Harpoon Classic scenarios with the Harpoon community. All 117 of these scenarios have never before been publicly available. David is the 15th designer to post his scenarios. This makes a total of 123 scenarios released this year and we aren't even out of January, yet! This must be a record for the greatest number of scenarios published in a single day. Congratulations and thanks to David for sharing his work. Comments and suggestions are encouraged by the author. These scenarios are made with the older Harpoon Classic 97 version, but play jus…

Rule #1 - Come up with a good scenario that hopefully all will enjoy. Rule #1a - Save often or suffer the ignominious loss of everything you have spent the better part of every waking hour on for the past week.

  5. I was bored tonight, so I went through the HDS3 battleset orders, looking at the dates on the orders. Not sure if it's of any value to anyone else, but, here's what I found if you wanted to play these in chronological order by date. This might be an interesting WWIII set to convert to HCDB and newer GE. At least one, maybe two of the scenarios would have to be basically made up from the orders, because they load copies of other scenarios, rather than what is supposed to be there. I know 'Three Days at Mannar" in HDSC is like this. Might also be interesting to think up a matching set of events for the parts of the world HCE couldn't cover back then, like South Afr…

Has anyone played HDSA recently? Like with the 102 build, probably 097 is the same. This is vs red subs in the Atlantic. I just played through the first two battleset scenarios as blue, haven't got single sonar contact (or torpedo up mine), only Keyhole reported some. I know the pond is big but probably the scen designer had something else on his mind but a nav exercise. I just haven't had the heart to check with show-all if it is the sub-stopping issue back from the grave. Now that Tony is not around to exorcise anytime soon.

Hello, I am creating a new scenario and I have the next question? Does an aircraft flies longer if it flies higher? For example, I have an aircraft with... Low level, cruise speed: 300 knots. High level, cruise speed: 400 knots. Does it spend the same level of fuel flying at different speeds so it can flies longer flying at high level?

Looking to create some low unit density scenarios for experimenting with possibilities. Wondering if the AI does anything. Examples: CIS base has MiGs with an AA loadout. I fly in and shoot down the 2 plane CAP and no other ac are launched - the interceptors just sit passively on base. CIS base has bombers with a surface loadout, victory conditions are based on the CIS damaging a Blue base and a CIS recon flight flys into radar range of a base. Nothing happens. Back to wondering if the AI does anything. Information and advise would be very welcome.

I'm new here and have searched extensively for a map editor, but I couldn't find anything. I tried using Wscenedt32.exe, but it doesn't seem to have a map editor. Is there any tutorial for creating custom maps?

Friends, As always, I am looking for ideas for new scenarios. Here is a generic idea that could be fleshed out in a lot of ways; I would like to see your ideas about possible variations. It all starts when country A does (or appears to do) something really annoying or even frightening to country B. Country B has a big enough navy to give it a regional or global reach, so it promptly blockades some or all of country A's major ports. Country B figures that the economic woes caused by the blockade will even the score (and, if all goes well, without bloodshed). Unfortunately, things do not go well. One of two things happen... 1) Country A decides t…

Set up Keflavik as a Red Base and added a battery of SA-6s and then ran an attack mission on it. My but I was surprised to lose 30 incoming JASSMs to I-HAWK missiles coming from a Soviet occupied base. I'm guessing I would have to go into the Platform Editor to strip them out, but it does seem odd that a RED base gets to keep and use NATO SAMs.

Although I have years of experience with Harpoon (dating back to PNP days), I am a mere padawan when it comes to scenario design. I have toyed around with the thought, but lately have begun making notes concerning a series of scenarios. One issue I struggle with is using the mission clock in the design editor. Could one of our resident Jedi Masters provide some insights? Does the clock work on a scale of the hours in the scenario or does the mission clock trigger the event X-hours after the beginning of the scenario? Also, when you create your scenario, do you typically script a timelne for the engagement? I just want to design some realistic situations and not ove…

  13. A new RAND report contains a number of hypothetical scenarios which are focused on aircraft carrier operations and which might provoke some ideas for new Harpoon scenarios (hopefully). The full report is here. China-Taiwan Crisis (2009) The government in Beijing waited until after the 2008 Olympic Games before taking a direct coercive approach against Taiwan. The motivation to take such direct action increased during the games, since the leadership in Taipei used China’s refusal to admit its team into the games as an opportunity to pronounce its “new national status” and virtually declare independence from the mainland. Within a month of the end of the games, Beij…

  14. I am running Windows 7, Build 2015.27 for HUCE Game and Scenario Editor I have saved edited Battle sets in GUIK with no problem. I am editing NACV Battle set scenario 5.0 Ambush when I receive error message. Also, I can save other edited Battle sets in NACV. This has me scratching my head.

Just to mention (because I forgot) if you wish to write some scenarios that will run in the latest official patch, don't use the latest beta version Scenario Editor

  16. Keeping F35-As flying 1600 mile from base You just need to be organised. One of the advanced toolbox functions is control of IFR beyond the standard game functions. Automated rendezvous of AC groups, adjustable refuel amounts to individual units in your desired order, refueling of IFR tankers from other tankers, use of IFR main tank fuel for refueling (and visa versa for extended IFR tanker range), auto stop of game when IFR routines have finished all make complicated air group patrols and strikes less demanding of the players time and concentration.

  17. Trying to edit EC2000 Norwegian scenario 8.0 (Blockers) to add the TU-22MP Backfire D to give the reds a fighting chance. Saw a suggestion to save a newer edited scenario with an older scenario's suffix, but got an annex error when I tried to open it in the older scenario. Is the old data just imcompatible with the newer scenario databases? Am I even asking this question right?

  18. Would anyone like to volunteer to recreate the [Original IOPG] scenario "12.0 ...and then there were two"? This would need to be tested and ready to go by mid-December 2024 at the latest. Parameters: 1. Similar groups, units, victory conditions to the original scenario. 2. Use EC2003 IOPG or Custom BattleSet. 2. Use HCDB or HCDB2 (HCDB2 would need a custom BattleSet from the BS Builder to make distribution reasonable). 3. Adjust design for increased realism (would Kuzenetsov really carry that many planes in that timeframe, similar for Nimitz, ...) 4. Add two submarines per side

Played this one through this afternoon/night. US force had to withstand a massive airstrikes from airbases on the Indian mainland early on, which are off limits to counter attack. Once the Bears and Backfires are dealt with there is low to medium air activity from then on until you come into contact with the Indian SAG. Then Su-33 from the carrier air wing keep you on your toes. The SAG was bigger than anticipated, with gear you can expect from an enormous Indian naval build-up. Think wish-list. Indian subs are active and even with me looking for them, I lost one ship for each sub, a Kilo and a Victor III. Indian SAG at that point took off at max spee…

Hello all, I'm trying to find time to get back into Harpoon after a long break. Has anyone done a scenario about a modern strike on Iran's nuclear ambitions? I couldn't readily find one in the downloads.
