PBEM / MBX Wargaming

A forum for discussion of Play By E-Mail (PBEM) and Mail Battle Exercise (MBX) wargaming using tools such as Harpoon 4 paper rules and/or TacOps.

Hi As per topic title, 4 players are required for a small harpoon game to be played via e-mail. The scenario will be run on the excellent CIC warfare plotter, so you will need a copy. http://www.stratsims.com/CIC_MP01.asp September 1st 1995. In the past few years the relationship between Libya and Russia has become rather frosty. Since the cold war ended Russia has been far less interested in backing regimes that were actively against the west. Russia has suffered terrorism particularly in response to its invasion of Chechnya. The latest information from the security services has laid the blame firmly at Libya’s door, providing training, weapons and funding for…

This is a follow on poll from the previous, more general poll found here. Please reply to the poll only if you have an intention (however slight) of being involved in the wargame, should it happen. A couple (Red Beach and Kola Strike) are drawn from High Tide, and I've tossed in a couple of new ideas just in case folks might want to pursue something a little off the beaten path. For convenience sake, a bit of a primer on what those H4/HT choices entail ... Red Beach, circa 16 May 1988 This is somewhat of a follow on to the scenario David and Goliath, which is being gamed right now under management of HG member Silent Hunter UK. STANAVFORLANT survivors …

Attack on Rommerbach The basis of this scenario is the Tactical Decision Game #98-10, written by Major John F. Schmitt, USMCR, and published in the October 1998 Marine Corps Gazette. http://www.mca-marines.org http://www.mca-marines.org/gazette/PDF/9810.pdf This battalion level scenario was thought to lend itself to a two-person network game as the host/umpire is required to coordinate the entry of one side’s forces, and “feed” information to the other side in way to shape the battle along the original intent of the “What do you do now Colonel?” Tactical Decision Game. It could be described as more of a kriegsspiel type of scenario, how will one side react, t…

  4. Today's CPX was based upon the April 1999 Marine Corps Gazatte's Tactical Decision Game 99-4 Battle Along the Tziepov, by then Major John F. Schmitt USMCR. The general situation was that Blue Forces "(advancing north with the mission of destroying 'Red Forces' en route to an operational objective some 30km north)" and Red Forces "(advancing south) have clashed head to head along the trace of the Tziepov River." The OOB's were essentially as described in the TDG. "Upon contact, in an effort to sieze the initiative, both forces have started shifting forces west, trying to turn the other's flank and establish a bridgehead on the far side of the river." From the never ending battles over Thorpe Bridge, the following report is of a short skirmish using the GDW Assault (circa 1983) rules (as I describe as a manual TacOps). For those not familiar, the overall scenario was derived from a USMC Tacical Decision Game "problem found in the Marine Corps Gazette. The actual problem can still be found on the MCA's website. MCA TDG 99-4. Thorpe Bridge can be located on the center right of the TDG map. My hand drawn map of the environs around Thorpe Bridge is here. Hexes are 250m each. The bridge is centermass but partially obscured by flash on scotch tape..., damn scotch. Since Assault was US Army-NATO centric M…

As this was conducted as research for my upcoming RP, Carrier, I'm not going to reveal what the precise aircraft types were. All I'll say was that BLUFOR consisted of four 4.5th gen heavy fighters and two strategic aircraft, while REDFOR consisted of six 4th gen light fighters. REDFOR had bounced BLUFOR after hacking into the country's air defence system, but BLUFOR spotted the attack in time to take evasive action and pickle drop tanks, so neither side started with an advantage. In two turns, both strategic aircraft were down with only one REDFOR fighter, although the crews managed to escape. BLUFOR took its revenge on REDFOR, killing a total of three fighters an…

First of all - No disrespect to the belligerents and/or victims of this current war between Georgia and Russia. Just using the situation to frame a viable scenario. Georgian Su-25 responding to ground units observing a Russian armored column advancing on their defensive positions. Russian armored column of 2x tank platoons and a mechanized infantry platoon. At a rearward position, covering a bridge crossing, is a solitary SA-11 launch vehicle. Su-25 enters the south edge of the map at T Level and moves up along the eastern side of the map. Turns 3-4, Su-25 effectively jams the SA-11 TTR with its AJM-A EW Pod. Turn 5 it is not jammed and the SA-11 lock…

https://discord.gg/t7pekGk in case anyone wants to join a fully public Harpoon 5 Multiplayer discord server. I can help you get to know Simplot2 and how to use it for double-blind games using the Discord channel. We have successfully used this method for both play by post (similar to PBEM style, submit orders, then update Simplot2 then show images then submit next turn orders) and real-time games. Discord offers both voice and video comms too for the realtime games or occasional "team" chats for Red or Blue teams.

Gave the Fast Attack Craft rules "Bulldogs Away" a quick run through tonight with a solitary Russian Nanuchka2 confronting a German Type 143 Albatros in the Baltic. The playing area, a 6x4' table, was determined to be fairly open seas, with only 1/6 of the surface area having a 10cm (1000m) long shoal. The sea state was rolled 1, and wind was rolled for but did not play a roll in this engagement. The Russians had a trained crew and an average command quality, while the Germans had a trained crew too but an adept commander. Each combatant and a dummy started the game represented by "blip" counters, both forces rather simplistically approaching each other at fa…

I've mentioned in Shore Leave that I would be using Avalanche Press's USN Plan Orange to do the operational part of their scenarios and use Naval Thunder Battleship Row to game out the tactical parts with a little more granularity. A Naval Thunder turn is about 4 minutes and each inch represents 500 yards. A quick step through this afternoon pitted IJN battleship Nagato vs USS Nevada (BB-36). Nagato's 16.1"/45's out range Nevada's 14"/45's so that at an arbitrary 35" (17,500yds) Nagato is firing at Medium Range (a +1 to hit) whereas Nevada is firing at Long Range (no mod). Nagato also has eight single tube 5"/40's that although can come to bear in this engagemen…

OK, using the Gulf Strike system I ran a short, small-scale engagement. Background: Iran has declared itself the arbiter of all naval traffic in the Straits of Hormuz. The straits have be sown with sea mines and Iranian fast attack craft have been attacking/harassing western naval assets in the gulf. Two US Carrier Battle Groups, along with an Expeditionary Strike Group are operating in the northern Arabian Sea. USCENTCOM tasks CENTNAV and CENTMC to destroy the silkworm batteries both along the Iranian coast and on Qeshm Island, and clear Qeshm Island of all Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps forces. US forces for avoid attacks into and around the Iranian militar…

World at War: Operation Garbo arrived yesterday. It is an expansion module for World at War: Blood and Bridges, and whose setting is LNLP's fictictious World War III in the Spring of 1985. This module focuses on a Soviet invasion of Sweden. The box comes with two map boards, 176 5/8" counters representing Swedish and Soviet units, six scenarios within a scenario booklet which includes some module spefic rules, and two Player-Aid Cards. One map is somewhat more wooded than the other, which is described to better represent "typical" northern Sweden. As the module has begun to arrive and be inspected, some concerns have been voiced, in particular a "Moving Fire…

Currently on the table is an old gem called Air & Armor, by West End Games. It depicts NATO Brigades/Soviet Divisions, unit of maneuver is battalions, and regiments respectively. The system uses a "step" counter beneath a unit counter to depict anything from a company sized force, up to a nine step motorized rifle regiment. Oh, the fog of war. Time is two hours per turn First scenario I ran was Race for the Bridges. Soviet 20th Motorized Rifle Division racing through a screen of the West German 35th PzG Brigade, for theany undestroyed bridges across the Main river, in the vicinity of Wurtzburg. The Canadian 4th Brigade Combat Group arrives in turn 3 of 5 to …

This was done solo on the floor (I know the title is using the CIC Plotter, but there is more coming), with three minitures (only one matching an actual participant, an O.H. Perry FFG) and the rest being carboard chits. This run through began much in line with history as Joshan (Combattante II) responded to being warned away from the Sirri GOPLAT by firing harpoons, in this case 4, at the US SAG. Simpson (FFG-56) immediately detected three of the four inbound missiles and things went downhill from there. At medium range, Simpson fired two SM1MR - both missed. At short range, two SM1MR's accounted for one of the harpoons. At very short range Simpsons 76mm/62 fired …

Using AirWar: C21 miniature rules, from Wessex Games and some 1/600 scale mini's today there was an F-105F leading two F-105D's on a Vietnam-era strike on an enemy POL site consisting of three POL tanks. The site was within the envelope of a defending SA-2b battery. The SAM site and wild weasel engaged each other the same turn/fire phase. The SAM battery volley fired three missiles at the WW, the WW let loose an AGM-45A Shrike. The next fire phase the Wild Weasel was able to evade, while the Shrike scored a hit on the SAM radar set, effectively suppressing and blinding them. Over the next two turn/phases the two F-105D's scored a single DP with an AGM-12B, and…
