In the middle of the North Atlantic, a storm is blowing topside producing level 5 seas. A Russian Krivak steams at 15kts towards its rendezvous point. 10 miles ahead of her a Delta II nuclear submarine prowls, making sure the way is clear. At the same time, an Improved LA class submarine is heading towards them. Neither side is aware of the others approach. The engagement started with 30 miles separating the combatants. A combination of her poor passive range and the state of the sea meant the Krivak was essentially traveling blind. Besides, the Delta II was employed to do the detection work if any submarines were in their way. Like all good submariners are taught…

Ah, it feels good to be back. I have a Klasse 122, with its MF hull-mounted DSQS-21B sonar and its Lynx Mk88 helo with its HF AQS-18 Dipping Sonar. Due to their respective MF and HF frequencies, while they can potentionally detect a Quiet Project 877 Kilo SS, neither would be unable to classify the target. So is going active the only way to classify a detected target with this types of sonar kits? Is active classification complete, i.e. No equivalent 4.4.8 for active sonar? Does a hull sonar only search one depth level. Would a dipping sonar be any different? I would think it would be at least close to omnidirectional. Thanks

Hi guys this is officially my first post. I start the proceedings with two questions that might have already been asked. So just bear with me for a moment . I've read the posts on H4 paper rules and I found them extremely interesting and informative. So much so that H4 is on its way to me from the US, (no dealers locally). I have been the proud owner of H3 by GDW for a few years and I also own H3 ANW for PC but it just does not have the same enjoymement level that I experience with the paper rules. So, having expelled much hot air here is my questions: I have read about a plotting board used for gaming (I think solitaire games). Where is it possible to obta…

Is it feasible to run a scenario solo, knowing where all the units are located and their strengths? Or is it kind of like trying to play chess against yourself where you have to try and forget what strategy you were using against the other side. Are there any good scenarios specifically set up for soloing or are they all slanted towards playing an opponent? Steve

American "Perry" class Frigate contrasted to British "Cornwall" Type 22/3 Frigate. I was feeling in an analytically mood. I didn't have the patience to game out an encounter, and found myself wondering what vessel would be "better" between an early model American frigate (I ended up choosing the Perry) and a later build British vessel (which ended up being the Cornwall). I know next to nothing about any warship and saw this as an exercise to contrast some strengths and weaknesses. One of my first problems was how to define "better"? For the sake of this exercise I decided it would come down to "which vessel would I rather be on", or more simply, it became a m…

This thread will be used to follow my feeble attempts to determine acceptable employment of this weapon system versus a an enemy air defense site consisting of 4x SA-6b TEL's, 1x Straight Flush Radar, 1x BTR-60 PU, and 2x ZU-23 AAA. The attacking force is rightly or wrongly 2x AV-8B II+ equipped with a Litening II pod and 2x GBU-12D, and have a general azimuth towards the radar. An attack limitation discovered so far is the aircraft's rapid approach towards the targets versus its ability to detect and classify these targets before their speed overtakes the target area. My first solution, which I began last night, has the section of Harriers split into Dash-2 t…

My initial idea was to see the effect of various different units carrying out an attack against an airfield. In my mind I viewed the airfield as an isolated not-well equipped one somewhere in Africa (think the book/movie “Wild Geese”). Then I decided that the airfield consisted of a few different things, and I planned to have each of my attack craft deal with different layers of the airfield. So I rolled what I wanted to do up into a single planned attack against the same airfield in this AAR. I’ve drawn up a map of an airfield on graph paper. Each square is 50 yards. There is a runway 2km long, single radar (single square) control tower (single square), 2 x …

A OH Perry FFG (4th gen cmbt sys) launches its SH-60B Seahawk Blk 0. The Seahawk flies 60nm at 270 degrees and lights its APS-124 SS radar. It detects a contact at 15nm at 270 degrees (75nm at 270 degrees from the OH Perry). The OH Perry has its radar dark so can't detect the target. The Seahawk detected the target with its radar. Is there a data link between the Seahawk and the OH Perry? If not, what kind of useful data can be relayed to the OH Perry by the Seahawk about the contact? Useful for targeting? I think if it had been another OH Perry that made active radar contact then there would be a data link (since they both have 3rd generation or better co…

In replayng SAW II #16 Protect theBuildup, I felt that the Argentinians were taking too many losses so I re-read the detection chapter and immediately came across 4.2.3.2 Shipboard Air Search Radars. 4.2.3.2 "...can detect air targets at very low altitude as well as surface contacts at 5% of their maximum range." The Type 42 carried a Radar 965. Its range versus a small target such as an A-4 Skyhawk is 80nm. If the incoming Skyhawk is flying VLow/NOE and passes the VLow/NOE Crah Table DR is it detected at 80nm*5%=4nm (the range to that specific target, in this case a "small" target) or is it 5% of the maximum range regardless of the specific target - In thi…

Hey guys, just starting out with Harpoon 5, quick fundamental question regarding how to read the weapon info: Example: Arleigh Burke Flight III F&A(8)4 fwd & (8)8 aft Mk41 VLS w/9 msls total, typical loadout 38 SM2MR, 6 SM3 Blk IA/IB, 16 SM6, 32 ESSM, 4 VL ASROC, 24 Tactical Tomahawk//F/2A 3 SPG-62 I read this as the MK41 VLS can fire from Front with 4 mounts each having 8 tubes, and/or the Aft with 8 mounts each having 8 tubes...but what does "w/9msls total" mean? Does it mean each turn 9 missiles can shoot total from the Front and/or Aft? thanks in advance,

I mashed together organization from FM 100-3 Infantry Based OPFOR, and various GCS ratings from High Tide and HNR 2003 to create a modern Russian/FSU type of paratroop battalion. The battalion consists of a HQ element, 3x paratroop companies, a mortar battery, a SAM platoon, and ATGM platoon, and finally an AGL platoon. This heavy weight weighed in at 18.63954 as veteran, and 15.53295 as competent - one of the stronger forces I have seen in my brief GCS experience. Being anti-social as usual during lunch in my pov, I braved the oppressive heat and worked out a sample air drop. I loaded the battalion up on 8x An-12A, which has a cruise range of 3078nm. Comin…

  14. Hey everyone, Taking a second crack at getting into H4, and trying to get into the basic tutorial scenarios and can't get past filling out the darn Ship Ref. Sheet...this thing alone is taking me over an hour for one ship for the basic AAW scenario, how do y'all do it for a full CVBG and air wing?? Right now what's driving me crazy is figuring out how to fill in the Sfc guns and various sensor data. I'm trying to fill out an O.H. Perry, using the example provided in the rules to 'check' my answers, and for the life of me I don't get where they get the ranges and Ph's in the example from. How do they arrive at Surf Rng Close at 2.2, Far at 4.3 for the Mk75 when the …

  15. Ok gang, While discussing the effects of offensive electronic jamming, and possible air defenses last night in chat - up came the topic of IRST. After reading the very brief passage toward the end of "Detection" (Chapter 4 of H4.1) I was able to gleen that IRST's are relatively short ranged, and that there are multiple generations, 1-3, with increasing passive detection capabilities with each. Can anyone point me to where the actually game effects can be found, primarily at what range does the generational IRST detect other objects. Thanks again, Pete

  16. I'm currently reading The Iron Pirate by Douglas Reeman (excellent book so far) and have been inspired to use a big battleship. I've chosen the Iowa on page A-23 of H4.1. Some questions about her: 1) Weapons lists 2F/A(3)3 Mk7 406mm/50//2 Mk 13. Does this mean there are two lots of 3 x 406mm guns both forward and aft (front and back)? So thats 6 guns forward and 6 aft. I assume aft guns cannot fire forward and vice verca. Why is Mk7 listed and then a Mk13? 2) 2P&B/PQ/2S&SB/S&SQ®6 Mk28 127mm/38//4 Mk 25 What does the PQ and SQ stand for? I assume ® is rear? Can a port side gun fire to starboard? I dont mean that as a silly question, can the …

Hi, I pieced together a set of paper rules from various sources: Rulebook, Data Annexes, Quickstart Guide, Player's Manual and a sheet of counters over the past couple of years. All my materials have Harpoon 4 printed on them. I began looking at this forum and noticed that most new players are advised to get 4.1 and/or High Tide. Are there significant differences between the two versions? I was pretty happy to finally have pieced together the materials all in new or very, very good condition only to discover I don't have the most current version. In looking at some of the PBEM games going(other than not all the platforms being supported in the data annex I …

    1) A Mirage 2000 and F-15 are approaching one another. The Mirage is armed with Magic AtA missile which has a range of 6.0nm while the F-15 is armed with a Sidewinder with a range of 9.6nm. Does this mean the F-15 gets to fire its AtA missile first since it will be in range first (using engagement turns)? And depending on the missile and planes speeds, the sidewinder may shoot down the Mirage before it gets within range to fire its Magic (within 6.0nm)? (Maybe i have answered my own question, rule 6.3.3.2.1 says in the engagment turn a missile reaches a plane the plane must evade and therefore cant fire). If the sidewinder does not reach the mirage before t…

Ok, I'm transitioning to submarines for a while in order to account for some ASW operations. To that end I am using the first ASW Scenario in the quick start book and the subject matter sub is an upgraded German Type 206A SS. First question is regarding the Ship Turning Table which includes an entry of a "surfaced submarine" = standard rudder 400 yards 4kts decrease and hard rudder 300 yards and 6kts decrease. Where is the turning of submerged submarines discussed, did not see it in the rules. Second question is in regards to the DM2A3 533mm Torpedo. Annex F lists three separate ranges and their respective speeds. How/when/where/why are these ranges and spe…

Good afternoon! please tell me (if possible) how are the additional rules for the Harpoon 3 edition that are described in the South Atlantic War Scenario Book formulated? I have the latest edition of this book, but it was written for Harpoon 5. I like Rules book '87 better. Thank you.
