using PE in sub folder
Nope, not possible without modifying the PE, wishlist item I'd say. You can however create multiple directory structures... C:\Games\HC\Databases\HCDB-110418\ within there copy in start_edit.bat end_edit.bat commondb.res (of the DB you want to edit) commondb.rsr (of the DB you want to edit) pfBuild2005.mdb pfData2005.mdb (or whatever you data file name is) db_utils folder (copy in as a subfolder) commondb folder (copy in as a subfolder) Bear in mind I haven't tried this but I expect the toughest part is making sure each time you open the PE that it is pointing to the right data file. I'm guessing this approach will fit in well with your use of the launcher as well for specifying the database.

Scenario Design Memory Limit
The file size limit is most likely right around 64kB so you are probably well over the limit! Bret helped surpass some lower limits but neither of us was able to crack the current limit. Sorry

2011.003 Release Notes
Thanks Don, true, as yet you can still only play as blue, much code yet to change and write. The items backfitted to the ugly duckling 2009.05x are in 2011.002 http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=13485 .

Public Domain DB Pics Thread
A brief intro to the licensing is that most wikicommons materials fall under... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tex...nported_License which stipulates linking to the license text as well as adhering to licensing requests of the author (which are usually non-existent). USA goverment created works should be credited but use of such photos is pretty free of contention thankfully. So the short answer is no, not everything on the wikicommons family of sites can be used without attribution and some items will not be able to be used even with attribution if the author has stipulated relevant restrictions.

Public Domain DB Pics Thread
If you are running Windows take a stab at the free irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/ for conversion . If Linux see The Gimp http://www.gimp.org . As for format and size... http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=632 I think it will be important to track in this thread the proof of public domain status of each image and the ID number that you and Brad assign to each image (or IDs assigned if they are used for more than one commondb.rsr). A link to a high resolution version of the file is also a hopeful contribution to the goal of being able to use higher resolution media down the road.

Why the scenario editor was never updated?
Being a 16-bit Windows application it almost qualifies as that but if I recall it would be difficult at best to run the current SE in Windows 3.1 due to the memory squeezing we've done. At a minimum it should require the win32s extensions to Windows 3.1 to run there if I'm not mistaken.

That new launcher will still work with the older GEs thanks to a little magic (otherwise known as reading the GE version from its exe file).

Good book to read useful as base for scenarios?
Strike Group Reagan, not only enjoyed by Harpoon players but written by one! The Sixth Battle is an excellent choice as well that I only recently read (and am currently re-reading). Brad has made a couple of scenarios inspired by the book, "Sixth Battle" and "Task Force Rybakov" at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...&showcat=19

Why the scenario editor was never updated?
Roberto, thank you for writing. The scenario editor (SE) has had quite a few changes and tweaks over the years, open up your ReleaseNotes.txt in the game directory and search for SE (match case, match whole word) and you'll see that it is far from ignored (or http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=2395 but that is slower). I do know what you mean though and unfortunately the 'simple to change' does not apply to the SE. Both the SE and the GE use Windows API calls and don't use any kind of framework. That makes any UI changes challenging. Doubly challenging is that the SE is still a 16-bit application that I program in MSVC 1.52. So the GE I can program in Microsoft's newest development environment but the SE is maintained with a programming tool over 15 years old. Being a 16-bit application also means that memory management is a huge challenge. One can almost ignore memory in 32-bit applications but the SE pushes the memory boundaries in many spots. This all makes the SE extra difficult to modify and improve. If a conversion to 32-bits were simple it would have been done long ago. I suspect it would be less labor intensive to rewrite the SE from scratch. That said, once in a while I pull out the code and make a little progress, http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=8095 You could always pay for the improvements but they would be very costly . If you haven't created a wishlist, please do, http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showforum=35 .

HCE Patch Order?
This is correct (no scenarios). We included the battlesets to spur scenario authors to write scenarios for those battlesets. You can find some at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?a...s&showcat=5 . In some future release of the game we'll include the best of those scenarios (with the scenario author's permission). The game is volunteer supported so the scenarios come from the community.

HCE Patch Order?
My OS is windows 7 in set up : 1. Double click HCE-UpdateComprehensiveInstaller-2009.050 2. next (User information) 3. Next --> there is error message in the middle part. The error message is Error: The specified file: '' could not be found. 4. But I ignored it and press next button 5. change for the installation folder according to my HCE folder 6. The game is working, but I am curious about the error message Error: The specified file: '' could not be found. . Did it perfectly updated? what do you think? By the way, Does it necessary to install HarpoonCommandersEdition-UpdateInstaller-2008.024 (289 mb) or just HarpoonCommandersEdition-SetupRelease-v2008-024 (338 mb)? Thank you for posting back. You definitely don't need to install the 2008.024 update (hence only two installs in my reply to you). Are you by chance running a non-English version of Windows? I test on US English mostly but also test a German Windows XP for good measure. I expect what you are not seeing is the Matrix Games license agreement. If the title bar of your GE (Winharp32.exe) says 2009.050 then you should be updated correctly.

HCE Patch Order?
1. HarpoonCommandersEdition-SetupRelease-v2008-024 2. HCE-UpdateComprehensiveInstaller-2009.050 Is the correct sequence for you. Make sure you double-check that the 2009.050 installer is pointed to the location where you installed 2008-024. If that doesn't work please let me know where you are getting the error message and what operating system you are using so that I can try to replicate the issue.

File - GIUK - Submarines Galore 1989 !
Watch me drag this topic off topic Don, I'd suggest you take a look at the PASON battleset using HUD3. They are a series of introductory scenarios made by Ralf essentially to help his son learn the game. I played the submarine PASON scenario last week (alone multiplayer) and had a ball (and sank a few subs to boot)!

Harpoon insights
What I wouldn't mind: * Assign the aircraft I want to attack the target and this may be aircraft from multiple launch platforms and have them take off at roughly the right time. * I want to allocate weapons when the planes get close to target. * I don't want to plot 'turn and burn' when there are AAMs incoming but I do want a Staff Assistant prompt to ask me if he should tell the planes to turn and burn instead of pressing on with the original mission. I imagine this leaves me somewhere in the middle between the grand strategists and the minutia(ists)

Harpoon insights
I'm always amazed how little changes in the world of Harpoon. Most of us still want that dream version of Harpoon we wanted long long ago and feel scarcely closer to that goal. On the HC side part of it is surely that for the most part players are happy with what they have. It isn't perfect by any measure but it provides the enjoyment players are looking for and in a quantity that dilutes their chances of demanding and creating that dream Harpoon. One project undertaken by HHQ er WarefareSims looks to be the best bet yet by far and while I don't like the behavior perpetrated by them they still look to have the best up and coming effort by such a great degree it isn't even worth trying to measure. They'll soon have the best game in town and I'll play it not because I approve of their methods but because their product is that much closer to the dream game. I've wanted to re-write HC with late a late '90s approach at worst and a mid '00s approach at best but don't have the persistence or salesmanship to drum up the required interest (and that is a huge amount of required interest). So we do what we can do improve the game based on the structural limitations imposed 20+ years ago by the original game. To that end occasionally I take a stroll down memory lane to see the same conflicts and questions arise again and again. With no further ado, here we go!...

WWII Strategic/Operational/Tactical ruleset
While perusing the Harpoon flames on Usenet I ran across a post by a gentleman sharing his large ruleset for WWII warfare. Honestly I've only read the Operational level Naval rules but they are well enough assembled and thought out and I feel confident in suggesting them as at least a curiosity to the paper gamers here. http://ww2thebigone.webs.com/ the Usenet post (that topic always gets me to read!) http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.ib...9d951d72bec77d#

Crowd Sourcing ASW simulation
https://actuv.darpa.mil/ "The DARPA ACTUV program is developing a fundamentally new tool for the Navy’s ASW toolkit. Before we can develop the autonomous software that will run on ACTUV’s computers, we need to understand what approaches and methods are the most effective. We have made arrangements for ACTUV to be integrated into the Sonalysts Combat Simulations Dangerous WatersTM game, and we’re offering this new ACTUV Tactics Simulator here for free public download and this is where you can play an import role!" I'm interested to hear any experiences of people who give it a try.

2011.002 Release Notes
HCE - 2011.002 - 2011/04/07 =========================== - Chg:0000 GE Connected game options dialog checkboxes for playing multiple sides. - Chg:0000 GE Staff Message dialog title will now be pre-pended with the side-name of the relevant side (i.e. "BLUE Staff" Message for an item for which the Blue side needs to respond). - Chg:0000 GE The land aircraft dialog was calculating distance to each landing location from the currently selected group instead of the group that was landing. Remedied. (thanks Joe K) http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=12962 - Chg:0000 GE Radar model was treating land installations like aircraft so possible detection ranges were way too large. (thanks Brad) - Chg:0000 GE Added logging of air to air missile resolution to the missile log. Example... 102692 Combat3.c:1477 - AirToAirResolution Ph: 80, Roll: 75 102692 Combat3.c:1477 - AirToAirResolution Ph: 80, Roll: 21 102692 effect4.c:5175 - CheckAirMissileHits 2 x AIM-120A/B AMRAAM against BLUE 2 x F-15J Eagle Plus, 2 shot down Still very much only effective playing as Blue. The Launcher probably won't be of much use either, well, not for picking the side(s) to play anyway.
