2. Rodrigo and I had another electronic showdown on the electronic seas, this weekend. This time, we clashed in the Norwegian Sea while playing "Nordkapp" by Dave Steinmeyer. This scenario was written for the PlayersDB. Rod played as the Russians hunting for a small amphibious group and I took the Dutch side. I was ordered to evacuate a small task group centred on the LPD Rotterdam after she had finished disembarking her Marines in Northern Norway. She was under escort by the FFGs Zeven de Provincien, de With, and PTM Orn. http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment...mp;d=1175391191 The first sign sign of the enemy was in the form of a helicopter's radar signature. Since I knew that these short-ranged aircraft had to operate from ships, I knew that there had to be a surface combatant hunting us. Fortunately, Rod underestimated the power and range of the Standard missiles carried aboard the Zeven. All it took was one to blind mine enemy's eyes. http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment...mp;d=1175391191 Stinging from the lost of his first helo, others followed more cautiously. Both sides launched their SSM attacks piecemeal and they were summarily brushed off by the powerful SAM defences from both sides. PTM Orn managed to close with the enemy and deliver her Penguin SSMs, but she was detected and summarily executed while making her dash for safety. The lousy missile performance by both sides resulted in each player violating his Rules of Engagement and we each killed a neutral vessel. http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment...mp;d=1175391191 However, my orders were not to destroy the enemy. Instead, I was to screen Rotterdam as she made her escape southwards. In this, I was successful and was awarded victory as Rotterdam managed to "slip out the back door" whilst everyone else was engaged. Thanks to Freek for another fun PlayersDB scenario, Rod for being a willing and patient opponent, and HarpGamer for hosting the server. 3. [size:18pt]The [color:#CC0000]131st [color:#FF0000]NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! [color:#000099]RECONNAISSANCE PROJECT PENINSULA 94 Peninsula 94 is a series of 4 related scenarios (Recon, Ingress, Strike Ops, and Egress) representing different phases of a US multi-carrier battle group attack on the Kola Peninsula. From the Russian perspective, this is the mission the navy has trained for since its beginning: defense of the homeland. These scenarios are related by a common order of battle and a concurrence of mission. Any discrepancies can be attributed to poor bomb damage assessment and better than expected damage control. They should be played in order and from the same side to appreciate the developing momentum an operation of this magnitude has. Reconnaissance: From the NATO perspective, this scenario is a submariner's delight. A force of SSNs must enter Russian waters and conduct an intelligence sweep of the area prior to the arrival of the CVBG. This scenario is going to require discipline and restraint on the part of the NATO player if he hopes to be successful in the overall strategy. Many targets of opportunity may present themselves, but adherence to the Rules of Engagement is the only way to win. From the Russian perspective, it's only a matter of time. Much of the fleet has been forced to retreat out of the North Atlantic and is now trying to re-group in the Norwegian Sea. The next logical step for NATO is an attack on the Kola Peninsula by a large CVBG which would surely be preceded by a submarine force to gather intelligence. This scenario is a large-scale ASW operation with a wrinkle, that being several unescorted capital ships in transit to re-organization points. The challenge here is force allocation. With limited first-line ASW assets, hard choices will have to be made and risks taken. Sounds like it's a contemporary addition. Just like usage of the word, "access". It's a noun, but through continuous improper usage (by folks who can't speak the Queen's English), it's now used as a verb, too. So, instead of just having "access to" something, you now "access" it. Just because a large number of people use something improperly, doesn't mean that it is or should be right. Otherwise, we'd all be speaking "goo-goo" and "gaa-gaa". This reminds me of a Harpoon Classic scenario that pitted the English-Speaking Community against all others. The scenario had an alliance of former British Commonwealth countries and the US against most others. It was pretty interesting. I hope that I can get it re-built for Harpoon3 soon. Then we can settle this like "Men" on the electron seas, blasting each other with electronic Harpoon and AMRAAM!
5. Rodrigo and I met up to see if we could finish this exciting PlayersDB scenario, "Alone in the Snow". Choowee decided to drop in and watch us fight it out. During our last session, Rod had beaten me back from Visby Island. It was not such a great loss as all the available ammo had already been depleted. http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment...mp;d=1174905556 As His Majesty's forces re-grouped around Bravalla, an uneasy standoff ensued. The Russian Floggers lacked sufficient range to effectively challenge me for aerial superiority over Bravalla and I had no planes armed with long-ranged missiles to challenge him over Visby Island. The odd Fulcrum ventured too far over the Swedish mainland and got jumped by flights of Gripen, but both sides were, apparently, catching their breath. http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment...mp;d=1174905556 However, Rodrigo turned out to be a cunning tactician. As he maintained his combat air patrols over Visby, several flights of helicopters were flown in behind his screens. As Sweden didn't have an airborne radar system, they were not detected until the last possible moment. Once detected, I was forced to throw all my available combat air patrols into the fray and try to intercept. The Helix B could do considerable damage if left unmolested. http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment...mp;d=1174905556 Unfortunately, Rod had laid out his plan quite masterfully. By sacrificing a pair of Floggers as the first screen, he depleted the SkyFlash loadouts on my Viggen. When they finally broke through the screen, they only had short-ranged Sidewinders left to face the Flankers and Fulcrum. Two Viggen were lost to long-ranged Alamo missiles with nothing in return. It was a masterful defensive setup. http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment...mp;d=1174905556 I really had no choice but to commit to an uneven battle. While facing incoming Alamo missiles, my Viggen exchanged SkyFlash with the Russians. Again, two Viggen were lost for no commensurate return. While they were engaged with the screens, they could not intercept the defenceless helicopters. Finally, after dreadful losses, one flight fought their way through to engage the ground assault elements. Sadly, they were only able to shoot down one helo and a defending fighter before they, themselves, were brought down by super lethal AA-11 Archer. http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/attachment...mp;d=1174905556 After shooting down the remaining Helix B attack force at tremendous cost to themselves, the men of the Swedish air arm simply had no more to give. The Russian planes swarmed over the Baltic like a swarm of angry Yellow-Jacket hornets just outside of a screen door. Out of planes, ammo, and luck, the Swedes retired northward as the game ended in a draw. The severe mauling of the Swedish forces prevented Swedish victory and the lack of surviving ground attack assets prevented the Russians from sufficiently reducing Visby air base. A tremendous game was played by Rodrigo. Thanks for the match and thanks to HarpGamer for the use of their server. 8. The 130th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! GULF OF SOLLUM On March 7th 1983, at the height of the Cold War, Hr Ms Zwaardvis is leaving Den Helder, Netherlands for a five week underwater transit to Naples, Italy. The SSK has been added to Task Force 69, and will carry out Recon missions of Soviet fleet anchorages just outside the Libyan 12-mile zone in the Gulf of Sollum. The Soviet Black Sea Fleet, faced with being bottled up behind the Bosporus, has taken to basing numerous warships in deep anchorages in International waters off North Africa in the Med. Sollum is the biggest of these. NATO MPA's keep a permanent watch on these offshore bases; but submarines are better able to observe Soviet activities, doctrine, training exercises and take hullshots of newly arrived ships and subs. This, then, is the mission of Hr Ms Zwaardvis, a modern Dutch submarine designed for the Cold War. 9. Navy Lacks Plan to Defend Against `Carrier-Destroying' Missile YahooNews Tony Capaccio Fri Mar 23, 12:18 AM ET March 23 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Navy, after nearly six years of warnings from Pentagon testers, still lacks a plan for defending aircraft carriers against a supersonic Russian-built missile, according to current and former officials and Defense Department documents. The missile, known in the West as the ``Sizzler,'' has been deployed by China and may be purchased by Iran. Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England has given the Navy until April 29 to explain how it will counter the missile, according to a Pentagon budget document. The Defense Department's weapons-testing office judges the threat so serious that its director, Charles McQueary, warned the Pentagon's chief weapons-buyer in a memo that he would move to stall production of multibillion-dollar ship and missile programs until the issue was addressed. ``This is a carrier-destroying weapon,'' said Orville Hanson, who evaluated weapons systems for 38 years with the Navy. ``That's its purpose.'' ``Take out the carriers'' and China ``can walk into Taiwan,'' he said. China bought the missiles in 2002 along with eight diesel submarines designed to fire it, according to Office of Naval Intelligence spokesman Robert Althage. A Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russia also offered the missile to Iran, although there's no evidence a sale has gone through. In Iranian hands, the Sizzler could challenge the ability of the U.S. Navy to keep open the Strait of Hormuz, through which an estimated 25 percent of the world's oil traffic flows. Fast and Low-Flying ``This is a very low-flying, fast missile,'' said retired Rear Admiral Eric McVadon, a former U.S. naval attache in Beijing. ``It won't be visible until it's quite close. By the time you detect it to the time it hits you is very short. You'd want to know your capabilities to handle this sort of missile.'' The Navy's ship-borne Aegis system, deployed on cruisers and destroyers starting in the early 1980s, is designed to protect aircraft-carrier battle groups from missile attacks. But current and former officials say the Navy has no assurance Aegis, built by Lockheed Martin Corp., is capable of detecting, tracking and intercepting the Sizzler. ``This was an issue when I walked in the door in 2001,'' Thomas Christie, the Defense Department's top weapons-testing official from mid-2001 to early 2005, said in an interview. `A Major Issue' ``The Navy recognized this was a major issue, and over the years, I had continued promises they were going to fully fund development and production'' of missiles that could replicate the Sizzler to help develop a defense against it, Christie said. ``They haven't.'' The effect is that in a conflict, the U.S. ``would send a billion-dollar platform loaded with equipment and crew into harm's way without some sort of confidence that we could defeat what is apparently a threat very near on the horizon,'' Christie said. The Navy considered developing a program to test against the Sizzler ``but has no plans in the immediate future to initiate such a developmental effort,'' Naval Air Systems Command spokesman Rob Koon said in an e-mail. Lieutenant Bashon Mann, a Navy spokesman, said the service is aware of the Sizzler's capabilities and is ``researching suitable alternatives'' to defend against it. ``U.S. naval warships have a layered defense capability that can defend against various missile threats,'' Mann said. Raising Concerns McQueary, head of the Pentagon's testing office, raised his concerns about the absence of Navy test plans for the missile in a Sept. 8, 2006, memo to Ken Krieg, undersecretary of defense for acquisition. He also voiced concerns to Deputy Secretary England. In the memo, McQuery said that unless the Sizzler threat was addressed, his office wouldn't approve test plans necessary for production to begin on several other projects, including Northrop Grumman Corp.'s new $35.8 billion CVN-21 aircraft-carrier project; the $36.5 billion DDG-1000 destroyer project being developed by Northrop and General Dynamics Corp.; and two Raytheon Corp. projects, the $6 billion Standard Missile-6 and $1.1 billion Ship Self Defense System. Charts prepared by the Navy for a February 2005 briefing for defense contractors said the Sizzler, which is also called the SS-N-27B, starts out flying at subsonic speeds. Within 10 nautical miles of its target, a rocket-propelled warhead separates and accelerates to three times the speed of sound, flying no more than 10 meters (33 feet) above sea level. Final Approach On final approach, the missile ``has the potential to perform very high defensive maneuvers,'' including sharp-angled dodges, the Office of Naval Intelligence said in a manual on worldwide maritime threats. The Sizzler is ``unique,'' the Defense Science Board, an independent agency within the Pentagon that provides assessments of major defense issues, said in an October 2005 report. Most anti-ship cruise missiles fly below the speed of sound and on a straight path, making them easier to track and target. McQueary, in a March 16 e-mailed statement, said that ``to the best of our knowledge,'' the Navy hasn't started a test program or responded to the board's recommendations. ``The Navy may be reluctant to invest in development of a new target, given their other bills,'' he said. `Aggressively Marketing' The Sizzler's Russian maker, state-run Novator Design Bureau in Yekaterinburg, is ``aggressively marketing'' the weapon at international arms shows, said Steve Zaloga, a missile analyst with the Teal Group, a Fairfax, Virginia-based defense research organization. Among other venues, the missile was pitched at last month's IDEX 2007, the Middle East's largest weapons exposition, he said. Zaloga provided a page from Novator's sales brochure depicting the missile. Alexander Uzhanov, a spokesman for the Moscow-based Russian arms-export agency Rosoboronexport, which oversees Novator, declined to comment. McVadon, who has written about the Chinese navy, called the Sizzler ``right now the most pertinent and pressing threat the U.S. faces in the case of a Taiwan conflict.'' Jane's, the London-based defense information group, reported in 2005 in its publication ``Missiles and Rockets'' that Russia had offered the missile to Iran as part of a sale in the 1990s of three Kilo- class submarines. That report was confirmed by the Pentagon official who requested anonymity. The Office of Naval Intelligence suggested the same thing in a 2004 report, highlighting in its assessment of maritime threats Iran's possible acquisition of additional Russian diesel submarines ``with advanced anti-ship cruise missiles.'' The Defense Science Board, in its 2005 report, recommended that the Navy ``immediately implement'' a plan to produce a surrogate Sizzler that could be used for testing. ``Time is of the essence here,'' the board said.
10. The 129th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! CHOKE POINT - PIG BOATS 1 At first, the world considered the declaration of war nothing more than a formality -- a joke. How could Russia successfully stage a war against Spain? Sure, the Spanish had vetoed the EC trade agreement with their large eastern neighbour, but they had their reasons. The problems could be evaluated and resolved. The declaration of war, though unnecessary, was somewhat understandable. In any case, the two nations were so far removed that nothing would come of the "war" -- right? The EC was completely shocked by the blitz the Russians conducted against the Spanish fleet. In only a few hours, the Iberian fleet ceased to exist, aside from a few patrol boats and one or two frigates. Did the remainder of the EC assist in the battle? Wasn't there a defensive agreement in the EC treaty? When Russia began assuring the EC that only the Balearic Islands would be the subject of the war, many European nations hesitated in joining the fray. The Russians were obviously angry and may actually invade the little-defended eastern borders of the Community. Britain, however, did not hesitate. Within an hour of the initial hostilities against Spain, Britain warned the Russians to back off. Then, a Russian amphibious formation was spotted moving towards Gibraltar. With no other nations assisting, Britain ordered what few subs it had in the Western Med to battle stations. Had the British not been conducting ASW and bottom-contour mapping of the Gibraltar region, Spain would have lost the Balearic Islands. They still might. Duration: 60 hours Original designer: Cass M. 11. AAR: Alone in the Snow
A Harpoon3 scenario for the PlayersDB By Herman Hum Rodrigo Flores was just finishing up a hard week's work when we linked up and decided on a game of ANW. We decided to try one of the latest scenario releases for the PlayersDB, "Alone in the Snow". The scenario depicts a Russian attack on "neutral" Sweden. Rodrigo played the Russians while I played the Swedes. As the designer of this scenario, I had a slight advantage since I had an idea of the overall Order of Battle. Luckily, Rod chose the side that I would have deemed more powerful and thus evened out the match. I had three operational airbases and numerous targets to protect. As is usual on the defensive, I had insufficient assets to cover them all. I decided to focus on Visby Island as it was the most likely target. Sure enough, enemy planes began their approach. I intercepted the first flight of four (Floggers?) with four Viggen at low level. They stayed at low altitude before climbing to the attack just as they came into range. It was the case of the classic ambush and all four bogies were splashed with no Swedish losses and Alpha flight congratulated themselves as they sped back to Visby to re-arm. As is often the case in war, the hunters can quickly become the hunted. Beta flight came in to relieve the departing Viggen and got a wholly unpleasant reception. This time, all four were shot out of the air well beyond the range of their own SkyFlash missiles. They were quickly avenged by Delta flight, but it did not assuage the feeling of sadness from the loss of their comrades. Delta flight also lost two planes in the melee. The score was now 6:6. Unfortunately, I knew that the Russians had a LOT more planes in the barn. As the bulk of my air patrols congregated around Visby Island, Karlskrona suddenly reported an inbound air raid! No interceptors were within range, so all I could do was grit my teeth and bear it. The air base was hammered violently. On their egress, a flight of 6 Viggen managed to catch the mixed group of Fulcrum and Fitters from Peenemunde and decimated them. The two survivors were able to exact a token of revenge, too. One Viggen caught an Aphid missile in the port side just as she was turning to flee after expending her missiles. A lull ensued as both sides re-armed and re-fueled. I ordered my air patrols to stay at low altitude. Ground intercept radar could clearly see an A-50 Mainstay loitering over Kaliningrad and I didn't want to present any targets for the swarms of Flankers and Fulcrum circling over the Baltic unless I had to do so. Soon enough, I was forced to reveal my patrols as teams of Flankers and Fulcrum started edging nearer. Several were ambushed without loss. As the interceptors raced back to base for re-armament and re-fueling, a veritable swarm of helicopters was spotted hugging the deck and approaching Visby. After dining on Fulcrum and Flanker as the main course, the pilots were ecstatic in their discovery of "dessert" and tore into the helpless transports with RB-74 Sidewinders and aerial gunnery passes. Nearby patrols of Flankers tried in vain to protect the helos, but they were just too far away. The entire assault force was cut to ribbons. At this point, Rodrigo suggested that he was no longer able to achieve his victory conditions as he had no more ground attack assets. While this might have been reasonable if he was playing a computer opponent, the fact that he was playing a human allowed him to continue. A military maxim states that, "When you are no longer able to achieve victory, the definition of victory changes to the prevention of your enemy from achieving victory." Rod certainly had more than enough assets remaining to make my life miserable. At this point, we decided to save the game in hopes of finishing it this weekend. Thanks to Rodrigo for a fun match to this point and to HarpGamer for the use of their server. Home of the Harpoon3 PlayersDB FilesOfScenShare
12. U.S. Says Open to NATO Solution for Missile Shield By REUTERS, BERLIN DefenseNews The U.S. is open to European demands that a missile shield system it plans to deploy in Poland and the Czech Republic be brought under NATO, the top U.S. missile defense official said on Thursday. “I wouldn’t be averse to that,” U.S. Lieutenant General Henry Obering, director of the Missile Defense Agency, told reporters in Berlin when asked whether Washington could integrate the shield into NATO’s defensive capabilities. “We will continue to consult with our NATO allies,” he said. His comments appeared aimed at reassuring European countries, like Germany, who have expressed concern the plan could splinter NATO states and urged more consultations with Moscow, who sees the shield as an encroachment on its former sphere of influence. Obering said such talks could help convince the Russians to accept the plan, which the U.S. says is meant to protect Europe and U.S. forces here from missiles fired by what Washington calls “rogue states,” such Iran and North Korea. It would be a mistake for European states to underestimate the threat posed by Iran’s missile programs, Obering said. Senior European officials, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, have called for the missile defense issue to be debated within the Alliance rather than on a bilateral basis. Merkel has vowed to make this point to Polish leaders when she visits Warsaw on Friday. Last week Polish officials said Warsaw needed a bilateral security pact with the U.S. because it was concerned NATO lacked the resolve to counter any serious threats. European diplomats say Merkel, who is presiding over Germany’s European Union presidency, is also eager to keep the debate from becoming an EU issue, which could interfere with her plans to revive the bloc’s constitution. Obering said Washington was perplexed by the negative reaction from Moscow, which views the shield as an attempt to shift the post-Cold War balance of power. He said discussions with Russia and NATO on the shield have been underway for over a year. “The difficulties with the Russians primarily center around the locations,” he said, adding that Moscow found the idea of Czech and Polish sites too close for comfort. ARMS RACE WITH IRAN Obering is in Berlin to explain the plan to install a missile battery in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic to German officials and lawmakers. On Wednesday Obering was in Ukraine and he heads to Paris next. German Deputy Foreign Minister Gernot Erler, in an interview on German radio on Thursday, suggested the missile shield could spark a new arms race — an idea Obering rejected. “That’s not the arms race we’re worried about,” he said. “The arms race we’re worried about is the one in Iran.” Erler also criticized decisions by nuclear powers Britain, France and the U.S. to modernize their atomic arsenals, which he said would complicate nonproliferation efforts.
13. USAF To Retire Newest Nuke Missile By GAYLE S. PUTRICH DefenseNews Beginning next year, the U.S. Air Force will retire the most modern missile in its nuclear arsenal as part of a 2002 disarmament treaty with Russia. The decision is expected to eliminate about 400 Advanced Cruise Missiles (ACMs) deployed with the B-52 fleet at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., and Barksdale Air Force Base, La. An Air Force spokesperson said the service does not yet know how much it will save by eliminating the missiles, nor is there an estimate of personnel reductions. “In the long term, there will be cost and manpower savings, and the Air Force will use any potential savings to support Air Force priorities, including recapitalizing our force,” Maj. Kelley Thibodeau said. “But what those are, we’re just not sure yet.” Air Force fact sheets state the ACM was expected to be in service through 2030. As recently as July 2006, top Air Force officials said they planned to maintain the ACM arsenal and possibly work with the Department of Energy to update the missile’s warhead. The ACM was conceived in the 1980s as an air-launched nuclear weapon that could avoid Soviet radar and destroy heavily defended targets. It is designed to arm B-52H strategic bombers, which carry up to 12, each tipped with a 5- to 150-ton W80-1 warhead. The original plan was to buy 1,500 ACMs to arm the B-52 and B-1 fleets, but post-Cold War budget cuts shrank the order. General Dynamics closed the production line in 1993 after only 460 missiles were delivered. As part of the 2002 Moscow Treaty, the United States agreed to reduce its overall nuclear arsenal. The treaty does not specify which weapons should go, only directing that the United States and Russia cut nuclear stockpiles to between 1,700 and 2,200 by December 2012 — a reduction of about two-thirds from levels at the time the treaty was signed. The Pentagon has already reduced the number of nuclear warheads on sea-launched ballistic missiles and is in the process of removing warheads from land-based ballistic missiles. Confirmation of the ACM retirement is the first public statement about a reduction of warheads on the bomber force, the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) said. The decision to kill the missile was revealed by FAS Director Hans Kristensen, who questioned Air Force officials when he noticed the 2008 budget proposal did not include funds for the ACM.

These waters are also rich with abundant fishing areas and valuable mineral deposits and disputes regarding them are common. 16. Freek Schepers doesn’t play a lot of Multi-player games, but when he does, he always delivers a great challenge. Today, we met up on the HarpGamer ANW server and decided to play, “Plug the Gap”, made for the PlayersDB. The scenario matches a NATO force of diesel submarines against a lightly defended convoy in transit. Although the Russian escorts are fairly numerous, their sonar is nearly useless. I played the Russians while Freek commanded the submarines. As the escort commander, I tried to have my nearly deaf ships fairly far ahead of my transports. It wasn’t a pleasant thought, but the only indication I would have of a submarine in the area would likely be the “Screeeeee….” sound of torpedoes in the water. With 6 corvettes, I certainly hoped that I had sufficient escorts to survive the first salvo. “Luck” would be on my side. As the little corvettes pinged away with their puny sonar systems, it was a radar operator that rang the alarm bell. “Periscope detected bearing 053 degrees!” Unfortunately, the nearest corvettes were well out of range for their SET-72 torpedoes. It didn’t matter as the sonar room immediately reported torpedoes in the water. The nearest corvette responded by launching her own salvo of SET-72 on Bearing-Only-Launch mode. She could only hope that they would be smart enough to find the submarine on their own as she turn around and ran from the oncoming torpedoes at full throttle. As one corvette was running from the torpedoes, more torpedoes suddenly appeared in front of her! Somehow, a diesel submarine had crept in behind them. Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place! She launched a brace of her own torpedoes while being chased by four weapons. With so many torpedoes in the water, the outcome was pretty much inevitable. I lost 4 escorts within minutes, but my own torpedoes managed to claim both subs. The action was so hectic, that one errant torpedo actually ran right between my two transports. There were a lot of breaths being held as it passed between them. Now, with only one surviving escort and the two transports, I made a run for the open sea. Unfortunately, the enemy commander seemed to read my mind as he raced with his sub to intercept. Once more, we exchanged torpedoes. The Tp62 ran straight and true. At first, I did not order my transports to turn away as I did not think that the torpedoes would be able to detect them. This turned out to be my undoing as they went into search mode and found my freighters. Now, when I turned away, it was too late. One vessel was able to escape, but the other one was caught by the Tp62 after a long chase. I was able to evade further attacks, but the loss of one freighter prevented me from achieving my victory conditions and the game was a draw. This was a really super exhibition of game-play by Freek. Even though I designed the scenario, Freek managed to surprise me with some very innovative tactics. Many thanks for the game and to HarpGamer for the use of their server. 17. The 127th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! ALPHA STRIKE 2 As the Serbian Civil War reached its fifth anniversary, the UN's decision to withhold ground troops continued to be widely debated. Although the addition of US air power was welcomed, alone, it was insufficient to turn the tide. The ground-pounder's axiom that "Air power alone cannot win a war. No airedale ever has or ever will be capable of taking and holding an acre of dirt," continued to stand the test of battle. As a result, the Serbian Civil War was not so much a civil war as it was a thresher of human bodies and spirits. Small battles ignited and then smouldered throughout the area. There simply was no "forward edge of the battle area". For each individual, the FEBA was where he or she stood confronting the enemy at one particular tick of the clock. Humans were fed into one end of the thresher and the chaff of broken bodies, broken minds, and human souls was discharged from the other. Of the US military services with aviation capability, the Air Force had no interest in the kind of missions required here. None were high, fast, or stealthy. The A-10 Warthogs would have been ideal had any remained in service. The confining waters and the mission profile of close air support turned the Navy off almost as fast. For a dirty knife fight in the close confines of a dark alley, only the Marines had the know-how, the equipment, and the enthusiasm for the job. "Aye-aye, sir. Semper Fi!" was their response. 18. Sub Snoops for the Future DefenseTech This month’s issue of the Navy League’s Seapower Magazine has a special report on an autonomous web of underwater robots that the Navy hopes will be operational by 2015. The Office of Naval Research-led project will imbue “underwater vehicles with the ability to sense and independently adapt to everything from ocean currents to hostile enemy subs.” ONR chief Rear Admiral William Landay said, “If we can sense that, get the vehicles to understand that, get the vehicles to adapt to that, then they are in the position where they really are starting to dominate the battlespace.” This net has been labeled “PLUSNet” and, the article explains, is comprised of a “variety of autonomous underwater vehicles and sensor technologies": Seahorse: A platform that can easily drift while maintaining a sensing mode. Will be equipped with a high-frequency billboard sensor array on its port and starboard {left and right to you landlubbers} sides for maximum coverage. Bluefin-21: Uses a buoyancy engine to allow drifting and bottoming modes of operation. Combines acoustic sensing capability with mobility to allow adaptive search behaviors under autonomous and supervised control. Seaglider: An energy-efficient glider for environmental sampling while functioning as PLUSNet’s communications backbone. When a glider receives an urgent acoustic message, Seaglider will alter its flight profile to rapidly surface and transmit ashore. Slocum Glider: A long-range deep ocean glider designed to cruise in a vertical saw tooth plane, the Slocum Glider will employ an acoustic towed array, enhance adaptive environmental sampling and sensing, and will support network communications. X-Ray Glider: The world’s largest underwater glider, it will offer a higher speed and greater load-carrying capacity than existing gliders, boasting acoustics and electric filed sensors, along with acoustic and satellite communications capabilities. Check out more stuff at the Navy League’s site. (And join even . . .)
19. Ralf Koelbach came back for hungry for revenge and showed why he is still a master of the game after fifteen years. Since I won our first encounter, Ralf challenged me to a re-match with the same scenario, Power Sweep made by Dave Steinmeyer with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. I took the NATO side and quickly picked up reactor noises from a Victor II-class sub. However, Ralf was playing it very coyly, this time. Knowing that he had revealed himself early on during our last engagement, he was creeping around at only 2 kts and barely making steerage. "It won't matter", I thought, as SSN Spartan crept up on him. At a range of 9nm, the torpedomen of the SSN Spartan were 'shining the cannonball' and just waiting for the order to fire. All of a sudden, the sonar watch cried out, "Transient!..." and that was the last thing they ever said as a nuclear fireball was re-created right over the Spartan. Damn, and she didn't even get a chance to fire before going down! That left me with SS Kobben against three Russian boats; two of them nuclear. I didn't like those odds at all, but what's a commander to do. Kobben tried to creep up on the Victor, but suffered the same fate as her mission mate -- nuclear fireball -- and I lost the scenario resoundingly. Thanks for another superbly challenging game. Thanks also to the HarpGamer for the use of their server and to Dave for the scenario. Ralf's already preparing the next generation of Harpoon player; he taught his 12-yr old son how to play. 20. Rodrigo Flores showed up on the HarpGamer ANW server looking for his baptism of fire in Harpoon multi-player. He's the first Brazilian I've met as an opponent. We chose to start with the Classic Power Sweep scenario written by Dave Steinmeyer with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This scenario pits NATO submarines against Russian. I took the Russians and Rodrigo played NATO. Rod acquitted himself well in his first MP experience. Our subs exchanged volleys of torpedoes, but luck was on my side as the decoys managed to distract his Spearfish. Victory was mine. We quickly decided to switch sides and play again. This time, armed with nuclear weapons, Rod managed to exact a price. I got off to a good early start and sent his Victor II to the bottom without being counter-detected. However, while hunting for his Charlie II SSGN, he must have caught a sniff of the SSN Spartan. The next thing I knew, the sky was falling from the detonation of a NUKE! Undaunted, the surviving SS Kobben was facing 2:1 odds, yet she crept up on the SSGN and killed her with Tp61 torpedoes before continuing on to ambush the Tango and victory was mine, again. A really fun time was had and a warm welcome to a new ANW. Thanks to Dave for the scenario and to HarpGamer for the ANW server. Anyone looking for an MP game can drop a line here or look for us on HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room.
21. The 126th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Steel Broom In response to requests from KlubMarcus and Sharker2003, this scenario has been written with plenty of contacts to give it that additional realistic feeling of maritime situational awareness. Keep up the excellent feedback and the designers will try to accommodate as many requests as possible. New World Order battleset #4 - Part 1 - The War with UBAN - Indian Ocean Persian Gulf - #6 STEEL BROOM In September 1995, one of the West's not-so-secret desires was fulfilled. Saddam Hussein, the mother-of-all dictators, was assassinated. However, this apparent good fortune has also kindled one of the Western world's darkest fears. In the chaos following Hussein's demise, the "rogue nation" of Iran has taken political control of Iraq. This new nation has further amalgamated with Yemen, Syria, Egypt, and Libya in a new military and economic confederation known as the United Brotherhood of Arab-Persian Nations (UBAN). Led by Tehran, UBAN is, of course, staunchly anti-American. It is also the largest oil producer and the largest market for military arms in the world. These factors have combined to bring in the cash-hungry NSC as a powerful ally of the new Arab alliance. In a third, infinitely more terrifying re-play of the 1980-1988 and 1990-1991 Persian Gulf conflicts, UBAN has threatened to cut off the flow of oil in the Gulf and to invade both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia if the latter nations do not join UBAN. The loss of these friendly partners would be a tremendous blow. Bolstered by its alliance with the NSC (New Soviet Confederation), UBAN is determined to make good on its promise to drive out the Great Satan. Background: UBAN forces are nearly defeated, but their ruling council has called for the Hand of Allah to strike down the Dragon in a great ball of fire. There are indications that UBAN has built several nuclear weapons, possibly using technology purchased from the NSC, and is now preparing to use them. The weapons are being held in bunkers deep inside Iran and the former Iraq. Your mission is to launch pre-emptive nuclear strikes on these sites. It is important that you time the strikes so that all three targets are destroyed as close to simultaneously as possible or the nukes may be moved to safety elsewhere. Or worse, they might be launched... Launch authentication codes follow. 2. Orders Initiate SIOP contingency warplan Operation Steel Broom. Attack and destroy all three UBAN nuclear sites at Balad, Kas Han, and Jandaq. 22. Ethan Atsinger has been playing and testing Harpoon since the first round of H3 came out. I finally got to meet up with him for a match of ANW tonight. Although Ethan had not played against a human opponent in nearly two years, he had not lost his edge. Ethan said that he could only play for a short time since he needed to spend some quality time with the spouse so we agreed to play a scenario that normally runs 20 minutes. As with most activities involving Harpoon, we got so engrossed that we eventually played 3 different scenarios for over four hours! We started with Power Sweep made by Dave Steinmeyer with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This Classic scenario pits NATO submarines against Russian. I took the Russians and Ethan played NATO. Ethan said that his nickname was Mr. Thermocline and it became apparent soon after we started. His handling of SSN Spartan was certainly troublesome to my forces and only the desperate application of a nuclear-tipped SS-N-16 Stallion put an end to this thorn in my side. His surviving SSK Kobben struggled bravely, but was soon overcome by my force of three submarines. We quickly switched sides and decided to play again. This time, Ethan and I fought to a draw. He wiped me out, but had insufficient forces survive to meet his Victory Conditions. Our last match of the night was Matrix Siege also made with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This scenario depicts a European training exercise matching a USN force against a combined European naval force in the Kattegat and Skaggerak. I took the European command. Ethan was very cagy and hid close to shore hoping that I would pass by him. I did manage to finally locate him hugging the Danish shore and launched a furious attack by Exocets from all angles and ranges. The power of his single AEgis destroyer was sufficient to brush off all SSM attacks from the entire combined command (that and the Targeting bug that had my SSMs turn around and fly back in my direction!) However, he played ‘hard to get’ for a bit too long and didn’t have time to get on station to fulfill his Victory Conditions. I wasn’t able to fulfill mine, either. However, I’ll “claim” victory since Ethan accidently blew up a neutral merchantman in the Kattegat. A fine evening of Harpoon entertainment was enjoyed thanks to the scenario authors, the players, and the ANW server hosted by HarpGamer. 23. Ralf Koelbach's been waiting 15 years for a head-to-head match in Harpoon and he got his wish tonight. He came onto the HarpGamer ANW Server and we found a quick game to try. We chose Power Sweep made by Dave Steinmeyer with the favourite database of Harpoon3:ANW, the PlayersDB. This Classic scenario pits NATO submarines against Russian. I took the NATO side and quickly picked up reactor noises from a Victor II-class sub. Boy, she was a noisy boat. The Spartan crept up on her and surprised her with a quick torpedo shot. I don't think she ever counter-detected my sub before she was on her way to the bottom. A second nuclear sub was detected, a Charlie II-class SSGN. Although technically inferior to the Victor II boat, the Charlie managed to counter-fire a salvo of torpedoes when she heard SSN Spartan fire her torpedo. Both volleys claimed victims. Now, only the diesel boats remained to do battle. However, I had the advantage as SSK Kobben had a track on the Tango and he never even knew that I was in the area. One final barrage of NT-37 torpedoes and I was awarded victory. Thanks for a really fun game and welcome to the world of Harpoon MP play. Thanks also to HarpGamer for the use of their server and to Dave for the scenario. With out the server, we would not have been able to play since Ralf is limited by a 64k ISDN connection. 24. NORTH KOREA'S NUCLEAR THREAT / North Korea 'had plan to attack Japan' The Yomiuri Shimbun An agreement adopted at the latest round of six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program stipulates two-phase measures toward Pyongyang's denuclearization in return for energy support. This second series of articles on the threats posed by North Korea's nuclear program, following the first series carried last month, takes a close look at the background to the agreement reached at the six-party talks. This is the fifth and last installment of the series. What appears to be a simple maritime accident can have very different implications in the eyes of military experts. On Jan. 9, a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine collided with a large Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. tanker in the Persian Gulf, causing damage to the submarine's bow and the tanker's stern. The accident itself was not serious, but Koh Young Choul, a former South Korean National Defense Ministry officer in charge of intelligence covering North Korea, analyzed it as follows: "It was highly likely that the nuclear submarine hid itself in bubbles created by the commercial ship's screws to sneak past surveillance by Iran," Koh, 53, said. "That's the best way for a submarine to slip through airplane patrol searches." "Even North Korea's old-fashioned submarines could come close to Japan in the same way," he added. There is nothing to worry about if North Korea has no intention of attacking Japan. However, that was not the case in the past. According to Koh, North Korea mapped out a plan to attack the Japanese archipelago, called Operation Mt. Paektu No. 3, 10 years ago, when it deployed Rodong ballistic missiles. Mt. Paektu, which stands on the North Korean border with China, is considered a sacred site by Koreans and also a symbolic place, having served as a bastion for anti-Japanese guerrillas during World War II. According to Koh, part of the Mt. envisioned Paektu operation went as follows: Immediately after starting a war, Rodong missiles would be launched, targeting U.S. bases in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, and other locations in Japan, as well as more than 50 reactors at nuclear power plants. In the meantime, ballistic missiles loaded with chemical warheads would be launched at Tokyo. After that, commando units aboard submarines would enter Japan and carry out guerrilla attacks against important facilities. For North Korea, U.S. military power is a threat. However, Pyongyang, which has an energy shortage problem, does not have any option in war other than a quick, decisive battle against the United States. Therefore, the best strategy for North Korea is to bring the war to an early ceasefire by inflicting maximum damage on Japan first. Such a scenario is a nightmare for Japan, but it could actually become a reality. In autumn 2005, the Ground Self-Defense Force secretly conducted a security exercise at its garrison in northern Japan under the scenario that the garrison was a nuclear power plant. Two GSDF companies, or 300 personnel, were mobilized and put on alert around the garrison. Their mission during the drill was to block elite rangers, playing the role of North Korean commandos, from infiltrating the facilities. The GSDF members who did not know each other were divided into friends and foes. Consequently, GSDF members acting as North Korean agents studied the situation around the garrison for several days before the exercise, and easily succeeded in entering the garrison by disguising themselves as construction workers or soft drink deliverers. In one case, some of the agents got into the garrison through a tunnel they made under a fence in only about 20 or 30 minutes. "It's difficult to destroy a nuclear power plant with small firearms such as rocket-propelled grenades, but there's a possibility that infiltrators could capture the entire plant by causing a blackout to disable security sensors," a senior GSDF officer said. The only way to prevent infiltration is to boost security manpower. However, the senior officer said, "With less than 150,000 members in total, the GSDF has a limited capacity to allocate its personnel to guard important facilities nationwide and monitor the coast." "Even if we provide security jointly with police, we won't be able to protect [important facilities] if the mission is prolonged," the senior officer added. Although North Korea's nuclear program was the major topic at the latest six-party talks, Pyongyang, behind the scenes, demanded the United States stop its joint military exercises with South Korea and its deployment of cutting-edge fighter jets to U.S. bases in Japan and South Korea. There is no doubt that North Korea will--from now on, too--try to seize every opportunity to erode Japanese, South Korean, and U.S. military power. The six-party talks will inevitably become protracted. Japan could end up in an even more dangerous situation if North Korea is given more time to advance its goal of strengthening its military power, centered on nuclear weapons. Is Japan well prepared? It is time to look at the country's present position with fresh eyes.
