  4. AAR: Go Tell the Spartans [spoiler Alert] – Turkey A Harpoon 3 scenario By Stephen Mills Kemal reminisced over his last visit with his grandfather before he passed away. His grandfather had been taught by his grandfather, "Bir Yunanliya asla güvenemezsin." [You just can't trust a lousy Greek.] Once again, he thought, they had proven that their promises of peace were worthless. The briefing officer droned on about their treacherous attack across the Meric River. However, a determined and fierce response was underway. They would feel the rage and ire of the Turkish people and Kemal was proud of the fact that he would be an instrument of their vengeance while strapped into his F-16 Falcon. Even though our beleaguered countrymen were sending out desperate calls for assistance from the Kavala region, high command estimated that they could hold their embattled positions for another 48 hours. Therefore, the Falcons stationed at Balikeshir, Bandirma, and Akinci were re-armed with all available AMRAAM. The first objective of the battle would be to win aerial superiority over the area. SSKs Dolunay and Doganay were sent to close up the choke points in the southern Aegean and prevent any reinforcement by sea while SS Saldiray did the same in the Sea of Crete. The flotilla of Kilic-class missile patrol boats currently assembled around Askaz/Marmaris was ordered to support them with their medium-range Harpoon AShMs [Anti-Ship Missiles]. First up were the Phantoms out of Eskisehir and Konya. They were backed up by four Falcons with AMRAAM out of Balikeshir. The Falcons were positioned as CAP [Combat Air Patrols] over the transports and the Dardanelles. A choke point acts in both directions and the entire purpose of the mission was to get the transports to Kavala. Helos from frigates Turgut Reis and Estocin went up immediately to establish an airborne radar picture of the Aegean. Right away, Falcons were detected throughout the area along with RF-4E Phantom reconnaissance planes. The Turkish Block 30 Falcons only carried Sidewinders so they were assigned to deal with the spy boys. As with any battle, keeping the enemy blind is always a good tactic. First blood went to the sons of Ataturk as they shot the unarmed RF-4E Phantom out of the air! Soon afterwards, missiles were detected inbound on the SAM batteries protecting the Dardanelles. “Damn, damn, damn,” Mehmet, the Air Defence co-ordinator, thought. “I forgot to check the status of the various radar stations in the theatre.” He immediately ordered that section of the Air Defence System under EmCon [Emissions Control]. That seemed to work as the missiles flew harmlessly past without hitting anything. Mehmet let out a huge sigh of relief. Maybe I’ll still have a job tomorrow. He wasn’t the only Turk with problems, today. An Exocet AShM attack was detected inbound against the transports. The closest Falcons only had AIM-9M Sidewinders left. They would have to do. A pair of missiles targeted on each Exocet was sufficient to bring them all down. The ships had not even left the harbour, yet, and they were already facing their enemy’s missiles. The Patriot battery based on the island of Skiros made it death to approach them. Several Falcon and one Phantom learned the hard way as they tried to close the distance in order to bag the Orion and Saab AEW [Airborne Early Warning] aircraft circling over the base. The SAM bubble created by the Patriot battery made any Greek aircraft within it virtually impervious. Doganay was on her way to close off a chokepoint when she found herself under attack. Someone else already had the same idea and they got there first! Luck was not with the crew of the Doganay as she was swarmed by an Orion MPA [Maritime Patrol Aircraft] and a flock of helicopters. To make matters worse, a torpedo was already in the water and was rapidly closing the distance. Doganay was not even able to fire any weapons in her own defence as her torpedoes were only effective against ships. She died quickly as the torpedo slammed into her sail. The men of the Marine landing force knew that they faced a serious battle at Kavala, but they did not anticipate the Heraklean effort expended to ensure that they would never arrive. A Corsair II attack suddenly materialized over the island of Chios. Evidently, they had been using island to mask their approach. They were only detected as they popped up in order to fly over Chios. Although the attack was daringly executed, the strike planners could not anticipate two flights of Falcons waiting for them on the other side. Two plucky pilots survived a barrage of sixteen AMRAAM thereby forcing the Falcons to close for a Sidewinder engagement. They exchanged missiles, but the SLUFs [short Little Ugly, er, Fellas] lost the contest. The death of the Corsairs did serve another purpose. Additional fighters, tasked with protecting the highly exposed FFG Estocin, were drawn southward in anticipation of additional attacks on the Marine Landing Force. They were totally spoofed and Estocin lay exposed. Once again, eight Exocet AShMs were detected. Estocin would have to deal with them herself. By the time the sea-skimming missiles were detected, they were already well within her SAM envelope. Still, she performed admirably. One by one, her Standard SAMs were able to claw five of the deadly spears from the air. Her CIWS [Close-In Weapons System] shot one more down and another was seduced by her SRBOC [super-Rapid Blooming Chaff] system. The last one flew doggedly onwards until it inexplicably flew right between the radio masts and directly into the ocean behind them. For five seconds, everyone continued to hold their collective breath until Ozel, the TAO [Tactical Action Officer], said, “Typical Greek workmanship.” Everyone in the Combat Information Centre thought that his attempt at levity was meant to rouse them from the shock over their survival. However, Ozel had an ulterior motive. During the attack, he had soiled himself and was hoping to distract the others from the puddle forming under his station. The Turkish photo-reconnaissance aircraft were luckier than their Greek counterparts. They detected and classified two separate SAGs [surface Action Groups] sailing forth from the Grecian mainland. One was promptly engaged by a SAM from DDG Kimon but escaped on afterburner. Saldiray was well out of position to intercept, but Dolunay might be able to hold the pass next to Andros. Unfortunately, Saldiray garnered a great deal of unwanted attention. A swarm of ASW helos was also detected approaching her. A flight of Falcons was sent in to try and cull out the ASW helos. It was like a wolf in the proverbial henhouse. Each and every sub hunter was massacred by the combination of AMRAAM and Sidewinders. Regardless, Saldiray was out of position and would play no further role in the events unfolding. In order to reduce the air threat from the SAG, F-4 Phantoms from Konya ducked in low and launched their missiles against DDG Nearchos and turned her into a pyre before she was able to launch a single weapon in her own defence. Eight Falcons from Akinci were sent in to finish off the survivors. Just like the currency market, the exchange rate was exceedingly poor. Four Falcons were lost in killing the four ships. To add insult to injury, the Kilic-gunboat squadron was slaughtered by Phantoms with Harpoon missiles before they were able to release a single missile of their own. Although the situation in the central and southern Aegean was in doubt, the landing zone was almost a milk run. Four Falcons with GBU-10E LGBs easily prepared Kavala by flattening all the installations. Now they just had to await the ships’ arrival. Limnos was very threatening as she was astride both of the approach routes for the Mine Squadron and the Marine force. Turkish command elected to raid Limnos and, hopefully, shut it down. The raid was very costly. It was not even possible on afterburner. Half of the raiders were shot down before they could release their GBUs. The survivors were so busily avoiding SAMs and AAA fire that they only managed to damage two structures. Like a spider in her lair, Dolunay sat quietly on the bottom of the Pass. She had peeked up to see a pair of Ydra and Adrias missile boats pass and she had returned to the bottom. Her commander knew from the Phantom reconnaissance pass that there were two very juicy targets in the centre of the formation. After waiting an agonizing twenty-three minutes, she returned to periscope depth to find DDGs Kimon and Formion in the middle of the channel. With only a final few adjustments in her firing solutions, she struck at Kimon and Formion with four torpedoes each. Knowing that she revealed her presence, she order flank speed to clear the datum point. Many other Turkish skippers would have ordered a withdrawal. However, this commander decided that if they were able to “shoot” their way into the formation, they would also “shoot” their way out. He drove his boat deeper into the strait. Several ASRoc torpedoes were launched in her direction. One tracked her but was drawn off by a decoy. Her torpedo men raced to reload her tubes. The spread fired at Kimon was a complete miss and only one hit on registered on the Formion. However, that single torpedo was sufficient to leave her settling by the stern. Sonar reported yet another torpedo in the water! Decoys were launched, but the little submarine had already exhausted her batteries and she was wallowing at periscope depth. The captain saw that there would be no escape this time. He ordered his torpedoes fired on a BOL [bearing-Only Launch] attack towards the final target in the formation, FF Ydra. The Greek torpedoes struck the brave little submarine 13 seconds after her final torpedo left the tubes. There was no one to hear thunderous explosions from the detonation of her torpedoes as they struck the Ydra. Unlike at Thermopylae, there would be no survivors to tell of the gallant stand at this pass. FFG Gelibolu was scouting way out front of the transports when sonar reported a subsurface contact. The TAO immediately ordered the ship to creep speed and turned to run down the bearing to the contact. The entire formation quickly launched every available helicopter. With that many dipping sonar in the air, the conclusion was foregone. A small sub contact was found to be creeping along at two knots. Well, thought the TAO, at least we know that it is not a school of fish. Two Mk46 NEARTIP torpedoes confirmed his hypothesis as they exploded 30 seconds after launch. An oil slick soon marked the grave of a Greek submarine. Since the Patriot unit on Limnos meant death to any and all that approached it, all that the Greek commander could do was position Falcon patrols to shoot down the Grecian Harpoons as they approached from the SAGs. This was a job for which they were well suited. Not one AShM reached the formation. With total aerial supremacy guaranteed over the central Aegean Sea, the landing ships made their uneventful voyage to Kavala and disgorged their Marines. Seeing that their treacherous ways would bear no fruit, the Greek High Command opened a dialogue for a cessation of hostilities. Linguistic assistance provided by Noyan Unal. 8. CNN WASHINGTON (AP) -- A mechanical monster grabs the F-14 fighter jet and chews through one wing and then another, ripping off the Tomcat's appendages before moving on to its guts. Finally, all that's left is a pile of shredded rubble -- like scraps from a Thanksgiving turkey. Rows of retired F-14 jets await demolition Monday at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. The Pentagon is paying a contractor at least $900,000 to destroy old F-14s, a jet affectionately nicknamed "the turkey," rather than sell the spares. The Pentagon fears that if the surplus jets aren't destroyed, they could fall into the wrong hands, including Iran's. Within a workday, a fighter jet that once soared as a showpiece of U.S. airpower can be destroyed at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, the military's "boneyard" for retired aircraft. "There were things getting to the bad guys, so to speak," said Tim Shocklee, founder and executive vice president of TRI-Rinse Inc. in St. Louis, Missouri. "And one of the ways to make sure that no one will ever use an F-14 again is to cut them into little 2-by-2-foot bits." The Defense Department intended to destroy spare parts unique to the F-14 but sell thousands of others that could be used on other aircraft. It suspended sales of all Tomcat parts after The Associated Press reported in January that buyers for Iran, China and other countries had exploited gaps in surplus-sale security to acquire sensitive U.S. military gear, including F-14 parts. Among other tactics, middlemen for the countries misrepresented themselves to gain access to the Defense Department's surplus sales or bought sensitive surplus from U.S. companies that had acquired it from Pentagon auctions and weren't supposed to allow its export. Investigators also found some sensitive items accidentally slipping into surplus auctions rather than being destroyed as they were supposed to be. In an unusual move when dealing with retired aircraft, the Pentagon is trying to shut off all avenues for Iran's parts purchasers by demolishing the F-14s, then combing through the scraps to make sure nothing useful remains. Iran is the only country trying to keep Tomcats airworthy. The United States let Iran buy the F-14s in the 1970s when it was an ally, long before President Bush named it part of an "axis of evil." Shocklee's company won a three-year, $3.7 million contract to render surplus equipment useless for military purposes. The work includes the recent demolition of 23 Tomcats in Arizona, accounting for about $900,000 of TRI-Rinse's contract. The military is considering using the same process on its other F-14s. The company has developed portable shredding machinery so the Pentagon can have sensitive items destroyed on a base instead of shipping them long distances to be shredded. The Tomcat was a strike fighter with a striking price tag: roughly $38 million. By the 1980s it was a movie star with a leading role in the Tom Cruise classic "Top Gun." But as the planes are mangled into unrecognizable metal chunks, the jets and their 38-foot wingspans appear small and vulnerable. The shearing machine, which uses pincers to rip apart the planes, weighs 100,000 pounds. The shredder is 120,000 pounds. An F-14 weighs about 40,000 pounds. Among the shredded victims in Arizona: a plane flown by the "Tophatters" squadron, which led the first airstrike in Afghanistan when the U.S. invaded in October 2001. The Pentagon retired its F-14s last fall. At last count, the military's boneyard in Arizona held 165 Tomcats, believed to be the only ones left out of 633 produced for the Navy. The others were scavenged for parts to keep others flying, went to museums or crashed, said a spokeswoman for the air base, Teresa Vanden-Heuvel. As powerful as the grinding machinery is, the entire F-14 cannot be shredded. The landing gear -- built to withstand the force of slamming onto an aircraft carrier's deck -- must be cut by hand with a demolition torch. It's made from steel with parts of titanium, so the shears can't cut it and the shredder can't chew it. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, considers the F-14 demolitions a good effort, but wants to go further and outlaw the sale of F-14 parts to anyone except museums. Wyden sponsored legislation that also would ban export licenses for F-14 components, which he believes will be more effective than Pentagon policies that he said have changed over time. "I don't think internal rules -- these internal initiatives -- based on the track record of the Department of Defense, are sufficient," Wyden said. The House passed similar legislation in June; a Senate vote is expected later this summer. The White House hasn't said whether Bush supports the idea. F-14 preservationists said the Pentagon is handling the Tomcats they obtain differently. As a Navy pilot, retired Capt. Dale Snodgrass delivered an F-14 to Iran -- flying nonstop from the United States with roughly No. 68 of about 80 planes that Iran ordered. Snodgrass said only key computers were taken out and ejection systems disabled on planes delivered to museums in past years. This year, when an F-14 went on display at a Miami museum, virtually everything was removed, leaving only a shell with the canopy painted black, said Snodgrass, who lives in St. Augustine, Florida. Snodgrass is part of F-14 history. He flew Tomcats for roughly a quarter-century and amassed the most flight time in them of any pilot: more than 4,800 hours. He was named Navy pilot of the year around the time "Top Gun" hit theaters. Snodgrass said he understands the Pentagon's need to demolish F-14s but said it would be nice to see some preserved. Pilots dubbed the Tomcat "the turkey" because of its ungainly, turkey-like look when landing on aircraft carriers. "When I first started it," Snodgrass said, "it was the biggest, the fastest, the most impressive, the most maneuverable fighter on the planet Earth."
  9. Jim Cobb (a.k.a. Bismarck) came back looking for revenge so we decided to play Dawn Patrol (re-made for the PlayersDB), again. This time, I played the Russians while Jim took the Norwegians. Jim got off to a pretty good start. One PTM Hugin came surging out of the fjords and detected one of my Nanuchka boats right away. We exchanged fire and his boat died, but it did a good job of revealing my location. Soon enough, my ship exploded from an unseen missile and the score was 1:1. Unfortunately, Jim had twice as many units as I did so I was waaay behind this game. Since I thought I was going to lose, I decided to take some big risks. I lofted an SS-N-9 Siren on Bearing-Only-Launch under the premise of, "I shot an arrow into the air..." and it bore fruit. When she turned on her radar, she managed to find an enemy ship. I unloaded the rest of my battery on the same bearing and caught 2 more targets. Unfortunately, Jim did the same thing and blew my Nanuchka right out of the water. Now the score was 2:4. Jim ran out of time and we decided to call this one a draw. A really superb effort by both sides with the endgame possibly going either way. Thanks to HarpGamer for the server and to Jim for a fun session. Anyone looking for an MP game can drop a line here or look for us on HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room.

  11. The 264th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! LEND-LEASE 1994 The Second Russian Revolution was not the last -- most analysts knew this. The shaky economy the Yeltsin government inherited would not be easily fixed and a people with newly found rights had a tendency to complain and even defy. However, a disenchanted populace was not the major problem. When high-ranking military leaders decided that the new government could not manage the economy and ensure the survival of the Russian Federation, they acted. The Coup of 1994 was much better planned than its predecessor. There were no protests in the streets of Moscow and the propaganda campaign which the military broadcast convinced much of the citizenry that perhaps the generals were right. However, everyone did not give up and when the northern regions of Russia began open conflict with the new government, the West responded with aid. The United States sent a CV Battle Group to the region and eventually began conducting strikes in support of the growing Freedom Front. When the NSC agreed that troops should be landed to support the rebellion, the US leaders could not stop their plans with the damage of the carrier. The landing must continue. 12. Seems like June is the month whereby we welcome back all the old-time Harpoon players to ANW. Jeremy been playing H2 and H3 for years and he is presently serving in Iraq, but managed to find time to log onto the ANW server. We selected Dawn Patrol, re-made for the favourite database of ANW, the PlayersDB. I played the Norwegians and Jeremy played the Russians. Like a man groping around in the dark, I dispersed my units and hoped to bump into my opponent. Luckily, one PTM Hugin did just that. It ran into one of his missile boats. I was quicker on the draw and managed to riddle her with gunfire and a pair of Penguin SSMs. The luck of the Irish was with me when I flipped on the radar. A second enemy missile boat was detected within range and she promptly sucked in 3 more Penguins without any return fire. After this quick engagement, I was awarded victory. With his appetite for destruction whetted, Jeremy wanted a second game so we chose Power Sweep, for the PlayersDB. I played the Russians while Jeremy took NATO. Jeremy played a very stealthy game. As my submarines made their transit, my Victor II suddenly detected inbound torpedoes materializing out of nowhere. She quickly launched a volley of torpedoes on Bearing-only-Launch and turned to flee. The dictum, "A live torpedo has no friends," was proven, once again, today. The Victor's flight was successful, but the torpedo soon tracked onto the (previously hidden) SSK Tango and forced her to reveal herself in flight. As the submarines re-grouped for their journey, they were surprised yet again! Out of nowhere, a barrage of Spearfish torpedoes appeared in front of SSGN Charlie. However, her luck held as the torpedo exploded against a decoy. A return volley of SS-N-15 Starfish doomed the Spartan and victory was awarded to the Russians. Still unsatisfied, Jeremy and I switched sides and re-played the scenario. This time, he dropped Nuclear charges onto SSN Spartan before she even had a chance to respond. Although it might not have been 'cricket', it certainly was effective. With only the Kobben surviving and opposed by 3 Russian subs, I did the best I could. A salvo of Tp61 torpedoes managed to catch the Victor II, but a return volley of SS-N-15 Starfish quickly sank the Kobben. Another great match. With time remaining before breakfast in Iraq, we decided to try one more game. This time, we chose Nordkapp, for the PlayersDB, by Freek Schepers. I played the evading NATO Phibron while Jeremy played the Russian hunters. With my ASW helos performing the scouting duties, I quickly identified the DDG Chabenenko and released a salvo of 16 Harpoon SSMs against her. Amazingly, all were shot down! I was in awe. Even better was to hear Jeremy describe the 'pucker factor' as he saw the wave of SSMs approaching his destroyer. Right about then, Jeremy managed to 'conveniently' arrange a crash of the server so that he could go for breakfast. We certainly hope to pick up this game tomorrow. Thanks to HarpGamer for hosting the server and Jeremy for a delightful series of matches. :smoke: Anyone looking for an MP game can drop a line here or look for us on HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room.
  13. We managed to lure the old fox, James Cobb, out of his lair for his first session with Harpoon ANW. James has been playing Harpoon nearly 20 years so it was a walk down memory lane. We selected Dawn Patrol, re-made for the PlayersDB. I played the Big Bad Russians and James played Norway. Although James was a bit rusty with the controls, he was still pretty cagey by spreading his forces around in an attempt to localize my units. Fortunately for me, I turned on my radar at just the right time and caught all of his units exposed. Like a deer in the headlights, I obliterated his forces with SS-N-9 Siren SSMs before he could respond. A quick and brutal game. Thanks to HarpGamer for hosting the server and James for the match. Like riding a bicycle, he never really forgot. :smoke: Anyone looking for an MP game can drop a line here or look for us on HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room.
  14. The 263rd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Liberation of Antilles This is the fourth scenario in the "Hugo's Folly" Battleset. Elections in the Netherlands Antilles have seen gains for the political party seeking closer ties to Venezuela and its President, Chavez. The Government has fallen and the legal status of the islands is unclear; with Curacao an independent nation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Aruba, and Bonaire seeking a similar status, and the three smaller islands of St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, and Saba being municipalities within the Netherlands. Early this morning, Venezuela carried out a sudden invasion of the ABC islands. Netherlands has pulled together the largest Task Force it is capable of amassing. 15. How Wonston ex-Navy chief urged Maggie to recapture Falklands Hampshire.net TWENTY-five years ago, Admiral of the Fleet, Sir Henry Leach, was First Sea Lord and head of the Royal Navy. He famously persuaded Margaret Thatcher the Falkland Islands could be re-taken from the Argentines. Sir Henry, now 83, lives in Wonston, near Sutton Scotney, and gathered with veterans and royalty in central London last Sunday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the South Atlantic islands 8,000 miles from Britain. He was given a place of honour on a red-carpeted dais with other top brass from the services in 1982, Lady Thatcher and Tony Blair, as the Prince of Wales took the salute from thousands of veterans marching down Horse Guards Parade. Sir Henry said: "It was paying due respect to those who fought the war and not least those who lost their lives in it. It was a proud occasion tinged with sadness by the wives and families who have lost their dear ones and that is always the way." At home in his bungalow surrounded by pictures of the many ships he served on during 45 years of active service in the navy, Sir Henry recalled the events leading up to the Falklands War. As First Sea Lord he fought swingeing cuts to the Navy under the first Thatcher government, almost getting the sack. Ironically, slashing the fleet encouraged the Argentinian military junta to think the Falklands was theirs for the taking. Sir Henry said: "To anyone observing the world scene it would appear that the UK was becoming increasingly disinterested in maritime affairs in general, and the South Atlantic in particular." Lady Thatcher's former defence secretary, John Nott, in his memoirs said the cabinet was considering a diplomatic reaction to the threat of imminent invasion when the First Sea Lord, dressed in full naval uniform, joined the meeting on March 31, 1982. "Leach, with great assurance, said that it would be possible to prepare a large task force that could sail the following week," said Sir John. "That greatly boosted Margaret's confidence, but was met with scepticism among the rest of us." Sir Henry said: "Almost her final question that famous Wednesday night was can we really recapture the islands?' "I said yes we can. It will be a high risk operation, but we can.' "That answered the question and I should have stopped there really, but I went one further and added and we must!' Why?' she snapped. "I replied because if we don't do that, in a few months we will be living in a different country whose word will count for little.' "That struck a chord with the former Tory Prime Minister who proceeded to give permission for the task force to set sail to retake the Falklands." Sir Henry said: "My greatest anxiety was in the very early stages. "I was concerned that although the Prime Minister was fired-up, several of her cabinet were not." When Sir John Woodhouse, then commander of the fleet, asked for more time to make preparations for war, Sir Henry refused and insisted it set sail on Monday, April 5. "I was concerned that the political head of steam was splendid in terms of the Prime Minister herself, but not the others and they would pussyfoot and start to waffle about negotiations. "Of course the fleet could have been recalled at any time, but that would have been perceived as a backdown and disastrous politically." General Galtieri invaded the islands to bolster his military junta government at home. However, the British Government had been preparing to give the archipelago to Argentina. Sir Henry said: "The sadness, as history will show, was the next round of ministerial talks was only two months away and they would have been enormously favourable to the Argentines. "Lord Carrington resigned on principle because he was in no doubt the interests and well-being of the islanders could have been adequately protected by treaty." Asked if he thought so too, Sir Henry said: "Oh yes, I think it could. That was the tragedy of it. "It was the internal Argentine situation that forced our hand. "History will show it, like most wars, to have been an avoidable mistake. But when it came to the point, war was inevitable and had to be conducted." One of the most controversial episodes of the Falklands War was the sinking of the Belgrano with the loss of 368 lives. The ship was apparently outside the exclusion zone and sailing away from the Falklands. Labour MP and anti-war campaigner Tam Dalyell made it a cause célèbre. Sir Henry said he was gathered with the other chiefs of staff and the Prime Minister at Chequers when "word came through that the Conquerer had sighted the Belgrano and sought permission to take her out". He said they took "precisely 10 minutes, considering the pros and cons", before giving the go-ahead. Sir Henry defended the decision, saying ships zig-zagged in war situations and did not sail straight to a destination. "Even the Captain of the Belgrano, who escaped, said that in the circumstances we were in, he would have done the same thing. "But once you get a nutcase banging away in the House of Commons it sticks for quite a long time!" Argentina responded by sinking HMS Sheffield, killing 20 men and the first British warship to be lost in 37 years. The former First Sea Lord, who joined the navy as a 13-year-old cadet, had spent most of the Second World War at sea, mainly in the North Atlantic and the Far East. But most of the government had no war experience. He said: "There was almost a tangible wave of shock and horror that swept through Whitehall. "It brought home to them that there was a war on, we were fighting it, and our people we
  16. Just met up with Elrandir for a game on the HarpGamer ANW server. Welcome to the world of ANW MP. We elected to try something simple, so we chose Power Sweep, written for the PlayersDB by Dave Steinmeyer. We ran it twice with me taking the Soviets on both occasions and Elrnandir commanding the NATO subs. It was a good match up. NATO managed to track me most of the game, but the long-ranged nature of the SS-N-15 Starfish helped even the odds. Even the phenomenal performance of the Spearfish were unable to compensate. In the end, I won both sessions after a nice bit of wrangling and manoeuvring by Elrandir. Thanks for the game and thanks to HarpGamer for the use of their server. :smoke: Anyone looking for an MP game can drop a line here or look for us on HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room.

  21. Happy first birthday to Harpoon ANW! Since the release, over 150 NEW Harpoon3 scenarios have been written for the PlayersDB. Here is another one. The 262nd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! INVASION OF ANTILLES Elections in the Netherlands Antilles have seen gains for the political party seeking closer ties to Venezuela and its President, Chavez. Netherlands has a standing presence in the Caribbean with an FFG (currently Van Galen), 2 companies of Royal Marines, and several Coast Guard Cutters to deter any aggression and interdict drug shipments. The 2 short companies of Royal Dutch Marines fought a gallant rear-guard action towards the airport and left the island in two Fokker patrol planes. The Netherlands has announced that it will send a task force to retake the islands, and convened an urgent NATO meeting this morning. The NATO meeting ended in an uproar after the NATO president determined that Article 5 did not apply and recommended diplomacy to end the crisis. The Dutch ambassador announced that Netherlands was ending its NATO military mission in Afghanistan with immediate effect and that in fact the 1500 Dutch troops there were already packing. It looks like Netherlands will have to fight the first phase of the aggression alone. 23. If I knew that my 'thundering herd' was going to be detected, anyway, I'd set my sonar for intermittent active since I'm not able to hide my position. I would expect the enemy to get the first attack on me and could only hope that he chooses a frigate as the initial target over the valuable transports. If the frigate survives the attack, then the diesel is mine as he won't be able to manoeuvre away fast enough to avoid the helo I send his way. That's how I'd do it.
  24. The 260th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! BALTIC BREAKOUT Instead of a peaceful transition in government, the Soviet Union, instead, undergoes two very violent and aggressive overthrows in one week. In the confusion during the change of government from communism to democracy and back to communism controlled by military leaders, a general war is started against NATO countries. Two key naval units, though, aren't told in time. The Admiral Gorshkov and the Chernova Ukraina are still docked in the Baltic shipyards. Though the whole world is caught off guard, the German Navy puts up whatever patrols it can. Most units are sunk in the initial attack, but once the situation was stabilized, a few subs and surface groups were able to take positions in the Baltic. The two capital units of the Soviet Northern Fleet are caught between a rock and a hard place. They sail, knowing the hell that awaits them as they try to manoeuvre through the narrow straits between Denmark and Norway. Once free, though, there will be clear sailing to Murmansk as the USN and RN are not in position to do anything about it. So, the challenge is there. Are the Soviet ships up to it? 25. Surviving a Falklands 'suicide' mission By Leesa Rumley Producer, Sea of Fire BBC The destroyer, HMS Coventry was one of four Royal Navy warships sunk during the Falklands conflict 25 years ago this week. Now, the captain and crew tell their story for the first time. HMS Sheffield on fire in the Falklands War on 4 May, 1982 HMS Coventry's sister ship, HMS Sheffield was hit 4 days into the war "It's like a game of chess. You've got to give up some pieces to get checkmate in the end. I was one of those pieces," says Captain David Hart Dyke. He was in command of HMS Coventry when at the height of the Falklands conflict, she was ordered to lure enemy bombers away from the British troops landing in San Carlos Bay. The captain knew it was a suicide mission: "I realised why we were doing it. If necessary, we were the sacrifice rather than other ships which were more important. And that's war. You've got to take risks to win." Battle 'horror' When Coventry was first ordered to join the British task force - sent to the South Atlantic after Argentina invaded the UK overseas territory - her crew were convinced that the unrest would be resolved by the time they reached the South Atlantic. Some of the men had no idea where the Falkland Islands were and wondered why the Argentines had invaded Scotland. I just sat in my office and cried Sam MacFarlane Just four days into the conflict, they began to understand the true horror of what they faced. The crew helplessly watched their sister ship HMS Sheffield burning on the horizon after it had been hit by a dreaded Exocet missile. Sam MacFarlane had recently transferred from the "Shiny Sheff" and remembers how his heart was in his mouth as he anxiously looked at the list of survivors. "I just sat in my office and cried. I don't mind admitting it. I just felt so bad." But the men soon became more battle-hardened. HMS Coventry brought down more aircraft than any other ship during the Falklands War. While other ships were sunk around them, they felt invincible. But their success was not going to last. Under attack On the afternoon of 25 May 1982, the Argentines took the bait and sent waves of Skyhawks to specifically take out the Coventry. Peter Bradford, who was 19 years old at the time, recalls casually sitting in the torpedo magazine at the time. "I was looking through a NAAFI catalogue and I was looking at a lawnmower, thinking that with all the money I've saved, I could buy one of those and cut my grass when I get home." I hope to God I'm never, ever that scared again Peter Bradford Oblivious to the danger, he went up onto deck, armed only with his camera "to get some action shots". He was terrified to see waves of planes approaching, and clouds of machine gun bullets as the Coventry threw up a wall of ammunition to fend off the attack. Bradford admits: "At that point my war started. I've never been so scared in my whole life. And I hope to God I'm never, ever that scared again". Three bombs hit the Coventry. Two of them exploded. The ship was crippled and rapidly filled with water, turning over at an alarming rate. 'Escape' Below deck, Sam MacFarlane saw his best friend Chris Howe with most of his clothes blown off, his flesh horrifically burnt. Captain Hart Dyke cannot remember how he got out Sam helped Chris negotiate a maze of smoke-filled corridors and shattered ladders. Sam explains: "Everyone was scrambling up the wall and I just manhandled, kicked, cajoled, shouted at, loved him to bits, cuddled him, got Chris up to the next level." Captain Hart Dyke was trapped in the Operations room, slowly suffocating on the choking black smoke. He had resigned himself to die: "I was surprised how calm I was about it. I was actually wondering who was going to mow the lawn in my absence." Even now he has no idea how he escaped, but he eventually found himself on the upper deck, watching spellbound as his ship's company calmly evacuated the ship. "I was probably the last to leave. I actually walked down the ship's side which was almost horizontal by that time and jumped the last two feet into the water." In less than 20 minutes, the ship had completely capsized. Nineteen men were tragically killed. Yet remarkably, the remainder of the 300 strong crew made it to safety. They returned home on the QE2 to a heroes' welcome. Their ship remains at the bottom of the South Atlantic.
