Russian Intervention in Syria
More extensive (and potentially informative) video: If this isn't fabulous scenario fodder, I don't know what is.

Russian Intervention in Syria
The Russians are certainly bringing out all the toys. 25 Russian long-range strategic bombers in action over Syria for the very first time (The Aviationist) Russian MoD video shows Tu-160, Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers (with Su-27 escort) bomb ISIS in Syria (The Aviationist)

How to Prosecute ESM contacts?
It always depends. Generally speaking, if you're a ship and the ESM contact is not within your own radar range (if the radar were energized), or the potential radar range of the contact (i.e. it is painting you), then you should not immediately energize your radar. Use your offboard assets (especially aircraft) to try and triangulate the ESM contact until it can be better localized, or alternatively, use that airborne radar(s) to search out the target. If you get an ESM hit and then begin to sustain damage, its likely that you were within radar range of that ESM contact and he detected you and fired upon you. In that circumstance, there are few reasons not to energize your own radar, if only to detect incoming attack or get your own shots away.

F18's intercept Tu-142
Remember that last year the USS Donald Cook was 'buzzed' a dozen times in the Black Sea by a Su-24MR passing within 1,000 yd (roughly 0.5 nm) of the ship.

Yes, more or less. The ESM hit is essentially you detecting his radar emissions. You get a bearing, but there is an uncertainty zone instead of a specifically known range.

I thought it was rather strange, as well, especially after I energized all of my ship's radars and waited to be bombarded. But nothing.

When launched on a 'bearing only' attack, the Harpoon would proceed to an activation point for its own radar seeker to turn on and search for a target. If it passes that point without actually detecting a target, the countdown timer continues (in the opposite direction) as the missile moves away from the activation point.

Spoilers apply * * * * * * My first run through this scenario was rather uneventful. (You might even say realistic). The Chinese refrained from firing on me, although I am quite certain I was detected. Potential for a follow-on version exists, now that the Essex ARG is in the area.

Welcome to the website! I'm happy and rather proud that we have been able to help visually impaired folks previously, so I am hopeful that we can do it again.

That was the plan (to install Mica VL) but apparently it hasn't been installed yet. So I hadn't made the change, but I suppose its just as well (or at least until we know better).
