  2. When you see pennant numbers instead of names in the HCDB, it is typically because either (1) the ship has not yet been named, or (2) the name is duplicated in another entry, and more properly belongs in that other entry (the pennant number being retained to prevent crashes where it has been used in a scenario). In this case, it is #2.

  7. Still no joy on getting the victory conditions to trigger. I have destroyed everything within a 400 nm radius of the USN CSG. That thing that hardly ever happens? ... Zero losses on my part. Moving on now to harass the Chinese mainland ... just because.

  11. On the Russian Tank Damaged by a US Missile in Syria (DefenseTech) The author of this article (who is apparently the managing editor at Military.com) doesn't seem to know how Shtora really works. The two OTShU-1-7 electro-optical jammers at the front of the T-90 turret (one of which was damaged by the explosion of the TOW missile and/or reactive armour) is NOT the primary means of disrupting semi-active laser homing missiles (like Hellfire). That would be the job of the 'aerosol' screen (aka smoke) created by the grenade dischargers. Instead, the job of the EO jammers is to interfere with the semi-active command to line of sight guidance of missiles - like the TOW 2A probably used here - by interfering with the communication between the guidance system (at the operator) and the IR beacon on the rear of the missile.

  13. Spoilers apply! * * * * * * After Action Report : Eviction Notice This new scenario by Patrick Howard (aka rainman), for the EC2003 Battle of the Atlantic battleset, has a great and altogether familiar premise. The timeless battlesets of Harpoon Classic are chock full of scenarios centered on the North Atlantic - and Iceland in particular. Many of them also depict player controlled Soviet forces in control of Iceland. This time around, as commander of modern day Russian forces who have seized a firm grip on Iceland - and moved in substantial forces - you must hold your position while threatened by American and British forces bent on serving your 'eviction notice'. There are lots of new toys to play with - including the very capable Su-30 and Su-35 series Flankers, the Kuznetsov carrier group with a futuristic air wing, and the Pyotr Velikiy battlecruiser. There are also a handful of Tu-22M3 Backfires available, but with the AS-4 Kitchen missile gone from inventory, these are not nearly as fearsome as they once were. Unfortunately for you, the enemy also has new toys, including the F-35 and stealthy weaponry. And gobs and gobs of cruise missiles. Once the scenario began, my immediate priority was preparing my forces for the defence of Iceland. A few aircraft had obviously just recently arrived from the Kola, and weren't ready for battle. Others still needed to be ferried over. AEW&C coverage had to be established pronto, but there were only a handful of these available and a lot of battlespace to oversee. Both the Kuznetsov and Velikiy were just exiting the Denmark Strait, and I hoped to put them in a blocking position between Iceland and the open Atlantic. Dangerous but necessary. A trio of submarines further south would have to help shield them. Meanwhile, a resupply force was still north of the island and needed to be herded to safety. There seemed to be time do all of this ... but only just. It wasn't long before hordes of cruise missiles began appearing (typically at critically short range), hell bent on destroying my ability to operate out of Iceland's limited number of airfields. Trying to stop them - they appeared to be arriving in multiple streams from multiple directions - was quite the task. I was trying to keep my naval groups quiet but at some point it became necessary to involve them in the cruise missile defence. This proved to be my downfall. The cruise missile attack against my airfields was defeated, but a group of F-35s sneaked their way into SDB range of the Kuznetsov ... and obliterated her. Game over. I continued to play - and there was plenty of entertainment still remaining to be extracted from this scenario - and perhaps I will add some account of that later. Great scenario by rainman. It was fun to return to old haunts with new technology, even if it was unsuccessfully.
  14. Looks like this might be a dead end. Created the attached test scenario and ran it with the same GE, battleset, submarine and torpedoes ... and the torpedoes appear to be functioning just fine. My earlier experience of firing 12 torpedoes for 12 misses was completely bizarre ... but may have been a one-off? torptest.zip
  15. And apparently open to the relevant page for the Type 054 class frigate, corresponding to FFG-575, Yue Yang, mentioned in the story. These ships are well known to each other.
  16. A valid point, which makes me wonder if the operating Depth is having an effect. I continue to look for specific testing of this guidance flag in torpedoes.
  17. It would be appreciated if someone could test the following torpedo guidance flags: 1. Unknown 2. Passive 3. Active/passive The 'active/passive' flag seems to be producing 0% hit probability, and since the code appears to treat all three flags the same, we'd like to see if all three are being affected. Thanks!
  18. Yes, you can expect the ASuW capable SM-6 mod. This is a little further out in time, but I will look. 15 nm is correct.
  19. Very challenging scenario ... that's all I will say at this point.
  20. They're still going after Daesh, so not that surprising. They've never been going after Daesh (as such), but rather after any and all groups that posed a threat to Assad. But in any case, that wasn't my point. The Mi-24s were active previously, with no Mi-28s or Ka-52s in sight. And now they've shown up.
  21. Having difficulty getting the victory conditions to trigger in this scenario. I have destroyed all of the offending bases and a number of Chinese SAGs, but no joy yet. Something else has happened, which has been very rare in Harpoon (for me), but its unrelated to the vicconds and will comment on it later.
