kcdusk
Just come across this article from yesterday. Did something go seriously wrong with the carrier groups procedures? 2 x Tu-142 Bears got within 1 nautical mile of the US Ronald Reagan. One mile!?!?! That sounds pretty close to me? I thought they would have been escorted or directed away well before they got within one mile? http://edition.cnn.com/2015/10/29/politics/us-aircraft-carrier-russian-plane-encounter/

broncepulido
Many similar incidents in the First Cold War. The other option is to shoot down them, and apparently is not polite.
broncepulido
As example this incident of 1968, ended with a crashed Tu-16, after USS Essex overflight:
CV32
Bump Is one nautical mile normal? Remember that last year the USS Donald Cook was 'buzzed' a dozen times in the Black Sea by a Su-24MR passing within 1,000 yd (roughly 0.5 nm) of the ship.
